Don't see what the fuss was about.we got what we deserved

The game should have been well over by then. Until our players learn that:

a. When facing the opposite goal, there are other players around you

b. If you don't see them, and decide to shoot, the odds of scoring increase exponentially if you hit the target

How many shots were wide, over the top, or hit at defenders? Some speed of thought please.

After scoring we could have better pressed home our advantage, but we had 5 shots on target, and excluding the gifted pen, Chelsea had none. A few of the papers are saying a draw was the fair result, which I find somewhat odd.

bit harsh to say we got what we deserved. you could say it could have been expected as we did not score more goals.

however, 1 goal was always going to be enough against a Chelsea side that was toothless up front and devoid of positive ideas in midfield.

we DESERVED a 1-0 win, which was denied us by a complete tosspot of a referee, a fact confirmed by that bitter blue bloater Andy Gray.

We deserved to win the game, but it didn't look a different Liverpool to last season's model. We were a good team last season and even if we hadn't attempted to strengthen at all, we were always going to continue being a top team. However, I think it is clear we have not taken enough 'steps' in the market this summer.

Torres highlighted the difference an investment in quality can make. We should have been going into this campaign with 3 new players at his level (at least). Babel looks good but is not ready, and Benayoun and Voronin didn't ven make the 16 today. It's disappointing, but despite this we still have a real chance. 2 more top players and I think we could have started to consider ourselves favourites rather than just contenders.

Way to early to compare us to the same team as last season. I'm more confident this season than last but not confident enough to think we'll win it. I'd be shocked if we we're more than 10 points from the winner though.

Bad finishing doesn't mean you deserve an outrageous penalty against you and the worst refereeing performance in living memory.

is right. we should've pushed for the second goal but we still deserved to win the game 1-0 frankly.

and none of our strikers in last year's squad would have possessed the necessary skill to score our first goal

We deserved to win the game.

As has already been said, I don't think the Chavs would have scored.

The positive we can take is that it was the third game at anfield in row where we've been easily better than them.

Overall we were the better side, more possession, better interplay, a superb goal and some other opportunities.

However you have to be dissappointed that (as far as I can remember) Cech has made one save. Now OK Reina hasn't had even that but...

A top team like Chelsea have always got a goal in them and as such a 2nd is imperative if the win is going to be nailed.

A crass penalty award like that is always hard to take, but that's football. And lets be honest we have had our share of dodgy pens at Anfield over the years. You just have to deal with it, and deal with it by scoring again, which never really looked like happening. As above Cech had very little to do.

Overall a performance to be optimistic about, and not the worst result in the world. Could have been better but we move on.

IMO the REAL TEST is next week, a nasty little trip to the NE on a Sat morning to play a promoted alehouse side in front of a lairy crowd. Its a game we would have failed to win in previous years.

Let's see.

Do you mean different? I say that because there just isn't the room as you point out with the players not making the matchday squad. I also disagree that we are the same as last season, you contradict yourself slightly by brining up Torres, who really does change the dynamic of the side. Already this season we look to be setting up in midfield to take the initiative not stop them/control the game. With Torres threat pushing the oppo back, we seem to have more space in the middle, and more fluidity in our play. It's a move on from the rather static, slow side of last yr for me.

Torres' goal alone is sufficient to disprove that.

We had nobody last season who could have scored that. It isn't a wholesale change in our style of play, but that was never needed for me.

Time will tell if we've taken sufficient steps, but as you seem to suggest yourself we weren't actually that bad last season. One more player who is an almost automatic first choice would have been nice but I'm pretty happy with our quality.

As for the original 'we got what we deserved' post, I think that has already been answered. Complete nonesense.

What you deserve in football is irrelevant. It's what you get. And we would have got 3 points today.

But we're very solid, showing much more class, and we can only improve too.

You were watching a different game. Previous Liverpool teams have been deadlocked with Chelsea without being able to open them up much. This one kept creating chances and didn't run out of ideas when they didn't go in, despite having your yrthm broken and taking a heavy setback because of the ref.

The performance was very much encouraging.

Disagree

Several things where different from last seasons Liverpool

1) Left back - he has finally realised riise is not the best defender and has decided to use riise higher up the pitch and get a proper solid defender in at left back, whether that be arbeola or heinze

2) Central midfield - he has decided to loosen the shackles on central midfield and play gerrard and alonso who are finally going to get the chance to work on a partnership, I wouldnt mind mascerano in there, either him or alonso would do for me but now gerrard, the best centre midfielder in the world iis playing central, which leads nicely onto 3

3) Pennant is finally starting to develop into the player we all hoped he would be and that means we do not need to use gerrard there anymore. Pennant was fantastic yesterday, would alves for example have offered any more than pennant yesterday ? I do not think he would.

4) We now have a balanced striking partnership in Kuyt and Torres that offers everything, workrate, movement, pace ability etc etc etc. We can play long, short, down the channels and either one of them can drop off into the hole.

5) Competition - Every player knows they have to perform or they will be out as there is a good player waiting to come in and take their place.

As for the new signings, they where clever, quality signings. Yes they did not make the bench today but that is more an indication on the quality of our sqaud than the weakness of them. We where not a bad side last year yeh know, we did not need a major overhaul, just a bit of quality up front and out wide, and gerrard moved into the middle which is what we have now got

Im not convinced that Arbeloa is right now our first choice left back. IMO, he should be, but its entirely possible that he is playing there because Rafa doesnt want to start Babel at left mid just yet.

if we got what we deserved then we would have won - stop trying to be controversial. We let the game slip but under no fault of our own - we were just starting to crank up the pressure when they got their gift.

We didn't get what we deserved. The only solice I can take is that we really seem up for it this season. The players self belief seems high and Chelsea were chuffed to come away with a point. I hope we can continue with this mentality.

Also Gerrard is going to have a monster season. I've no idea what went on over the summer but he seems dare I say it......happy.

:o

You have mates who support Chelsea?

Agree with pretty much everything that Huyton said as well ( :o:o )
