Guest Anders Honoré Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Before we get all giddy about the final, who has been the outstanding player of the season for us? I am tied between Agger and Finnan. Whilst players like Reina, Carragher, Alonso, Gerrard, Kuyt and Bellamy have all suffered patches of indifferent form over the course of the season, they are the only two who have managed to maintain a high level of performance, regardless of the overall form of the team. Both have been immaculate defensively and both have made a noticeable contribution attackingwise as well. I am thinking this sways it slightly in Agger's favour as that is a rare quality in a centreback, but OTOH Finnan's contribution forwards has overall probably been better.

Agreed.
Eiler99 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I think it's between the three defenders already mentioned. Crouch has also done well when ever he's been called upon but not really enough to warrant player of the year. Gerrard will probably be on everyone's lips after pulling out another Captain Fantastic performance in Athens though.
Earl Hafler Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Finnan, Reina, Carra or Agger. I think Agger and Finnan have been more consistent whilst Carra had a dodgy spell of a few weeks but has put in some Herculean performances whilst Reina really found his form. I'd probably choose Finnan or Agger. Difficult one - hopefully next season we'll be considering a forward
JonShar Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I'd lean towards Carra and Reina with Agger and Finnan a close second. Put it this way - a centre-back pairing of Agger and Hyypia I'd be comfortable with. If we'd have lost Reina for a period of time I'd have s*** all over myself.
Crazy Horse Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I'd give it to Agger because of the way he settled straight into the side. Although he gives the credit to Carra for that. Put it this way - a centre-back pairing of Agger and Hyypia I'd be comfortable with. If we'd have lost Reina for a period of time I'd have s*** all over myself. That's an excellent point. Although I don't think we ought to judge our best players by which of them have the worst understudies, Reina was by far the most irreplacable player this season.
George Costanza Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Finnan, Reina, Carra or Agger. Its certainly between those four. My vote would be for Finnan just ahead of Carra.
RafaShanks Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 In order: FinnanCarraAgger Doesn't say much for our attacking players.
stressederic Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Agger. To come in and unseat a legend like Sami Hyypia without any noticeable difference, and then playing his part in another terrific season for our defence, makes him the player of the season for me. He's got a cracking left foot, has scored some crucial goals, is constantly learning and improving his game, and seems to genuinely enjoy defending.
Hodgson for Chelsea Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Finnan, just outstanding. Then Carra for being Carra, then for most improved it has to be Pennant - Didn't want him here and recently his performances have proved why Rafa is in charge and is doing so well.
Zoob Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Finnan and Agger have both been absolutely outstanding. Neither seem to be the sort of people who demand praise, but I find it astounding how little- ouside of Liverpool - their great seasons have beeen recognised.
Owen1978 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Agger has to be, just stepped into sami's shoes and hasnt put a foot wrong, plus that goal against chelsea to help us into a CL final was priceless.
Guest Finnan3 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Finnan would get my vote just ahead of Carra Reina and Agger - outstanding too.
Kite Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Agger has been very impressive in the way that he has risen to the occasion and unseated Sami but Finnan has been playing at a consistently excellent standard, even when there was no real competition for his place in the side. Finnan I think, over the course of the entire season, has been easily our best player. Second Agger. Third Carra.
