Ressies won 3-0

A fantastic goal from youth team captain Jay Spearing was the highlight of Liverpool Reserves' deserved 3-0 win over Newcastle United at Kingston Park on Monday night.

Spearing was the best player on the park and netted with a superb curled effort in the 73rd minute of the game. The young scouser has a tremendous will to win attitude and he inspires all around him with his passion and commitment. He spent the majority of last season recovering from a broken leg but he has made a strong return this season and his performance levels have been of a high standard.

Spearing also made the second goal for Craig Lindfield 10 minutes from time, with the striker finishing well from close range.

Another of the heroes from this season's youth cup team Ray Putterill added the third goal with a good finish two minutes from time on his reserve team debut.

Gary Ablett fielded a young team that featured five of the heroes who are in the youth team that has reached the final of the FA Youth Cup for the second season in succession. Spearing, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Robbie Threlfall and Lindfield all started for Ablett's side at Newcastle while Putterill, Martin Hansen, Michael Burns, Charlie Barnett and Michael Scott were on the bench.

Jack Hobbs captained the team and Paraguayan defender Ronald Huth partnered Gabriel Paletta at the heart of the Liverpool defence.

Newcastle also fielded a young team including the majority of the side that lost to Liverpool in the semi-final of the youth cup last week.

Liverpool played some fine football on a bitterly cold evening in the North East and the passing was of a high standard. Inspired by the promptings in midfield by Spearing and Hobbs the Reds took the game to Newcastle.

Lindfield, who scored twice for the youth team against Newcastle last week, on another day might have had a first half hat-trick. He curled one effort just wide and then saw Newcastle keeper Fraser Forster deny him with a brilliant point blank save. He also shot wide from the edge of the box after a tremendous burst into the Newcastle half from Argentine Emiliano Insua.

Liverpool kept up the pressure and a minute into the second half Hobbs was unlucky to see his deflected effort go just wide after a tremendous move.

Paul Anderson played up front for Liverpool and came close to scoring after 68 minutes but he just couldn't quite turn the ball towards goal as he tried to get on the end of Flynn's right wing cross.

The Reds pressure finally paid off after 73 minutes when they took the lead through Spearing's superb strike and then Lindfield added a deserved goal for himself on the night 10 minutes from time.

Substitute Putterill made it 3-0 two minutes from time to seal an excellent night's work for Ablett's side.

Newcastle United Reserves: Forster, Gate, Shanks, Doninger (Bertram 51), Ramage, Huntington, Troisi, Pattison ((Godsmark 45), Donaldson, Carroll, Lua Lua.

Liverpool Reserves: Padelli, Darby, Insua, Huth, Paletta, Hobbs, Anderson (Barnett 88), Flynn, Lindfield (Putterill 86), Spearing, Threlfall. Subs unused: Burns, Hansen (GK), Scott.
