Happy birthdays 1938 - Defender Gerry Byrne was born in Liverpool. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times. 2008 – Left-winger Rio Ngumoha was born in Newham, London. He joined the reds from Chelsea’s Academy in the summer of 2024, making his senior bow in an FA Cup defeat of Accrington Stanley at Anfield the following January as he became our youngest ever player in the FA Cup and youngest ever starter in all competitions aged sixteen years and 135 days. 1963 – Former First-team coach Steve Clarke was born in Saltcoats, Scotland. He was appointed in January 2011 following Kenny Dalglish’s return to the hot seat, signing a new three-year contract four months later. However, he left the club in June 2012 following Dalglish’s sacking. Triple debutants 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar, Craig Johnston and new record signing Mark Lawrenson all made their official reds debuts in our 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers as we kicked off another season. Midfielder Mike Matthews bagged the only goal of the game. Debuting against the Trotters 2009 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos played his first reds game as we came from behind twice to win 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers. Glen Johnson drew us level first after Sean Davis netted before Fernando Torres scored in his third consecutive game to make the scores 2-2 shortly after Tamir Cohen scored and Davis was sent off for the home side. Steven Gerrard netted the winner. 2004 - Xabi Alonso and Luis García both made their reds bows as we lost at the Reebok Stadium, our first League defeat under Rafael Benítez. Kevin Davies struck the only goal of the game in the first half, one of his four against the reds. 1945 - We drew a Wartime League match at Anfield 2-2, with Phil Taylor and Peter Kippax on target. 1953 - We lost a First Division game 2-0 at Burnden Park as Willie Moir bagged one of his five goals past the reds, with Harry Webster also on the scoresheet. Don Welsh reached a century of games in charge of the reds. Danny’s bow 2015 – We were beaten 3-0 at home by West Ham United, their biggest ever win at Anfield, with Philippe Coutinho sent off shortly after the break before Danny Ings made his reds bow from the bench. Mark Noble bagged the most recent of his three goals past us but was then dismissed for the visitors, a decision that was later rescinded. Manuel Lanzini and Diafra Sakho were also on target. Missing out at Wembley 2020 – Takumi Minamino scored his first reds goal after Pierre Aubameyang had put Arsenal in front in the FA Community Shield behind closed doors at Wembley. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, with Arsenal winning the subsequent shoot-out 5-4. Rhian Brewster hit the bar with his penalty on what was his last game for the club, the only player to fail to score. In and out 2010 – Midfielder Raul Meireles signed from his hometown club Porto for £11.5m. He bagged five goals in 44 matches, with all these strikes coming in a six-game spell following Kenny Dalglish’s return as Manager. He left for Chelsea in a £12m deal a year after arriving in L4. 2014 – Winger Jordon Ibe joined Derby County on loan, bagging five goals in 24 games before being recalled the following January. 1904 – Left-back David Murray joined the reds from Everton on a free transfer. He helped us to clinch the Second Division title, playing fifteen senior games before moving to Leeds City for £130 in December 1905. Up against the Baggies 2010 - Fernando Torres scored his fiftieth goal at Anfield, the only game of our League encounter with West Bromwich Albion, who later had James Morrison sent off. This was our 2,000th victory in the top flight. 1970 – Steve Heighway debuted from the bench as we drew 1-1 at The Hawthorns, with Alun Evans on target in this top-flight meeting. Jeff Astle was on target for the Baggies with the last of his seven goals against the reds. Off the mark 1987 - Peter Beardsley scored his first reds goal in a 4-1 win at Coventry City. John Aldridge converted a penalty, with Steve Nicol adding a brace. Cyrille Regis struck the home side’s late consolation, one of his four goals past us. 1959 – We fell 2-0 behind to Hull City at Anfield in a Second Division fixture, thanks to a John Coady brace, before eventually triumphing 5-3. Jimmy Harrower scored from distance with Jimmy Melia heading in to draw us level, before Ronnie Moran struck for the first time, from a free-kick to put us in front. Alan A’Court and Billy Liddell also got on the scoresheet, with all our goals coming at the Kop end in the second half after new Scottish keeper Bert Slater had endured a torrid early period to the game. Vic Metcalfe bagged the last of his six strikes against us late on in this game, with John Coady bagging a brace. Another debut 1936 - Keeper Alf Hobson made his reds bow as goals from Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys secured a 2-1 defeat of Stoke City at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season. This was Manager George Kay’s first game in charge of the reds, while left-half Jimmy McDougall made his 300th appearance for the club. Bagging a treble 1923 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted a hat-trick in our 6-2 trouncing of Birmingham City at Anfield. Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh bagged a brace on his reds debut, with Dick Forshaw also on target. John Bradford struck the first two of his fifteen goals against the reds. Defenders in and out 2003 - Grégory Vignal joined Stade Rennais on loan. He only stayed there for three months, playing five League games before joining Spanish side R.C.D. Espanyol later that season. 1911 – Scottish left-back Bob Pursell signed from Queen’s Park for £360, with the reds initially making an illegal approach. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. 1902 - Centre-half Andrew Raisbeck signed from Queens Park Rangers. He never made our first team in his two years at Anfield. A big day for Phil 1962 - Left-back Phil Ferns made his reds bow in our 4-1 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, our first win back in the top flight, with our goals coming from Ian St. John, Alan A’Court and a Roger Hunt brace. Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us. 1964 - He netted his only reds goal in our 3-2 defeat at Blackburn Rovers, with Tommy Smith scoring for the club for the first time. Andy McEvoy scored one of his four goals past us, with John Byrom and Mike Harrison also on target. 1934 - We also entertained City, when Gordon Hodgson struck in the second minute as we lost 3-1. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw pit through his own net, with Eric Brook netting one his nine goals against us and Bobby Marshall scoring the last of his five. Jimmy passes on 2006 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower died of cancer in Stirling Royal Infirmary. He had bagged 22 goals in 105 reds games after signing from Hibernian for £11,000 in January 1958. He moved on to Newcastle United in March 1961. A great credit 1988 - We beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 in our opening fixture of the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy, competed for by the previous season’s top eight sides. Barry Venison bagged his first reds goal as Ray Houghton, John Barnes and Jan Mølby, with a penalty, also scored. Neil Webb scored Forest’s late consolation, one of his five goals against us. Two-ton Jimmy 1932 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost 6-2 at Sheffield United, with Gordon Gunson and Ted Crawford on target. Jimmy Dunne netted two of his eleven goals past us, with Bobby Barclay bagging two of his five. Jack Pickering struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Bert Oswald also on target. Starting out We have twice more begun our season on this day in history. 1925 - We lost 3-1 at Leicester City with Donald McKinlay grabbing our late consolation. Arthur Chandler nabbed the first two of his six goals against us, with Hugh Adcock netting the first of his five. 1931 - Gordon Hodgson struck the only goal of the game as we won at Newcastle United. Young champions 2010 - England won The FA International U17 Tournament by beating Portugal 3-1 in Sc***horpe, with Adam Morgan, Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling all featuring. Macca starts out 1979 - Steve McMahon signed as a professional for Everton. He struck fourteen times in 120 appearances for the Toffees before joining Aston Villa for £175,000 in May 1983. On the move 2023 – French centre-half Billy Koumetio joined Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque on loan, playing nine times before being recalled by the reds the following January. 2019 – Forward Darwin Núñez joined Unión Deportiva Almería from Club Atlético Peñarol for a reported club record $4.5m. He struck sixteen times in 32 games before moving to SL Benfica in September 2020. 2014 - Xabi Alonso joined Bayern München from Real Madrid after six goals in 236 games for the Spanish side, helping them to claim the League, the Copa del Rey twice and Supercopa de España. 2008 - James Milner signed for Aston Villa from Newcastle United for £12m after a previous successful loan spell. 2002 - David Thompson signed for Blackburn Rovers from Coventry City for £1.5m. He had scored sixteen goals in 72 appearances in his two years at Highfield Road, and turned out 84 times for Rovers, notching ten times, before moving to Wigan Athletic in January 2006. 1995 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on loan from the reds. He only made two appearances in his two months at Roker Park, although they went on to sign him on a free transfer in March 1996. 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe rejoined basement side Hartlepool United on loan from Walsall. He played thirteen times for them in this spell. Other reds games 1992 – We drew 2-2 at reigning champions Leeds United with future red Gary McAllister putting the home side in front. Ronnie Whelan levelled before the break with Jan Mølby converting a penalty in the second half before Lee Chapman bagged the last of his six goals against the reds late on. 1979 – We were held to a goalless draw at Tranmere Rovers in a League Cup Second Round tie. We won the replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1956 – Geoff Twentyman bagged a brace as we drew 3-3 with Notts County in a Second Division fixture at Anfield, with Louis Bimpson also on target. 1951 – We beat Burnley 3-1 in L4, with Albert Stubbins, Cyril Done and Billy Liddell all scoring. International bows 1990 - Karl-Heinz Riedle won his first cap as an S.S. Lazio player as world champions West Germany drew 1-1 with Portugal in a friendly in Lisbon. Fellow future red Jari Litmanen also represented his country that day, as Finland drew 1-1 in a friendly with Czechoslovakia in Kuusankoski. 2012 – Jerome Sinclair made his debut for England Under-17’s as they lost 3-2 to Italy in a friendly in Burton, with Sheyi Ojo also featuring. Also in international action 2007 - Mamadou Sakho played for France Under-17’s as they beat Tunisia 3-1 in their World Championship Finals Round of 16 tie in South Korea. On the same day, fellow future red Nikola Sarić featured for Denmark Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat by the Ukraine in the Syrenka Cup in Poland. 1993 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel featured in Brazil’s 6-0 thumping of Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier in Recife. 1985 – Taffarel played as Brazil Under-20’s beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in a World Cup Finals group stage game in the former USSR.

Happy birthdays 1946 - Midfielder Peter Cormack was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Nottingham Forest for a club record £110,000 in July 1972 and won League title and UEFA Cup winners’ medals in his first season. He scored 26 times in his 178 reds appearances before moving on to Bristol City in November 1976 for £50,000. 1922 - Left-winger Peter Kippax was born in Burnley. He left his hometown club to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 1928 - Post-war red Joe Shepherd was born. He never played a senior game for us. His two brothers, centre-forward Arthur and full-back Bill, were also Liverpool players at around the same time. Hark! It’s Harkness 1989 - Steve Harkness signed from Carlisle United for £75,000. He went on to make 139 appearances for the reds, bagging three goals before being sold to SL Benfica by Gérard Houllier for ten times his purchase price in March 1999. Andriy off the mark 2007 - Andriy Voronin scored his first two reds goals as we beat SV Werder Bremen 3-2 in a friendly in Switzerland. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres all played their first games for the club. John Arne Riise was also on target with a 25-yard strike. Heading off 2007 - Mark González was sold to Real Betis Balompié for £4.2m. The Chilean international winger was actually born in Durban, South Africa. He struck three times in 36 games after signing from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although work permit problems delayed his arrival until the following summer. 2001 - Christian Ziege was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £4m, only a year after his acrimonious transfer from Middlesbrough. He had notched twice in 32 appearances whilst at Anfield, including coming off the bench in Cardiff for the first leg of the treble. Milly off the mark 2015 – James Milner struck his first goal for the club as we beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 at their Suncorp Stadium, with winger Ryan Kent making his first senior appearance. Adam Lallana scored our other goal. 2016 – Danny Ings and Ben Woodburn netted as we won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium in a pre-season friendly. Double departure 1999 - Rob Jones signed for West Ham United on a non-contract basis. He had famously failed to score in his 243 reds appearances, but persistent back problems led to his departure from Anfield. He was unable to achieve full fitness while with the Hammers and subsequently retired from the game. On the very same day, second string keeper Tony Warner joined Millwall on a free transfer, after nearly a decade at Anfield without making a first team appearance. He joined Cardiff City from the Lions in July 2004 after 225 games for Millwall. 2017 - Keeper Ryan Fulton signed for Hamilton Academical, playing seven senior games in his first campaign with the Accies. Backroom changes 2007 - Ian Ayre was appointed as our new Commercial Director, although he would not actually take up the role for another month. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having also been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said, “Being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. Ayre became the club’s CEO in May 2014, moving on from the reds when his contract expired three years later. 2002 - Hughie McAuley was confirmed as our new reserve team manager, leaving his position as the club’s Under-19’s boss. Academy Director Steve Heighway said, “Hughie is going down to Melwood to coach, but he will have a wide range of responsibilities and provide continuity between the Academy and Melwood. We are delighted for Hughie as he has been with us for a long time.” Leo the first 1997 - We lost 1-0 to IFK Göteborg in our first pre-season friendly, with Øyvind Leonhardsen making his debut appearance in a red shirt. This is one of only two games we have played on this day in history. Another honour for Ged 2002 - Gérard Houllier was awarded an honorary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University in a ceremony at the city’s Anglican Cathedral. Bob hitched 1946 – Bob Paisley married Jessie Chandler at All Souls Church in Springwood. They remained happily married until his death in February 1996, having two sons and a daughter. Mixed Copa América fortunes 1995 - Future red Brad Friedel saved two penalties as the USA beat Mexico 4-1 in a shoot-out, following a goalless Quarter-final in Uruguay. 2011 – Lucas Leiva was sent off in extra time as Brazil were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay in La Plata, with the underdogs eventually triumphing 2-0 on penalties. Bamber on target 1920 - Reds right-half John Bamber scored as an England side trounced South Africa 9-1 in an FA Tour game in Cape Town. Clubmate Ephraim Longworth also played. Forwards on the move again 2018 – Winger Harry Wilson joined Derby County on loan, netting eighteen times in 49 outings as the Rams just missed out on promotion. On the same day, young forwards Taiwo Awoniyi and Rhian Brewster both signed new contracts, while ex-reds full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Blackpool from Oldham Athletic after three goals in 62 games for the Latics. 2006 - Ex-reds reserves striker John Durnin was appointed to the coaching staff at Conference outfit Southport. He only stayed in the role for less than three months. 2003 - Ex-reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Northern Irish side Linfield from Blackpool on a free transfer. He remained there less than six months, before moving to Modena in Italy. 2007 - Centre-half Dejan Lovren joined Inter Zaprešić on loan from Dinamo Zagreb, scoring once in 56 games across two seasons. 2012 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Bolton Wanderers from Leeds United, where he was competing with Ádám Bogdán for the number one spot. He played 62 times before moving to Fulham in June 2015. 2023 – Left-back Yasser Larouci joined Sheffield United on loan from Troyes, making thirteen senior outings as the Blades finished bottom of the Premier League. On the same day, centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed as a player for Tallinna Kalev, having been their President since 2016. He played fourteen times in his first season there. Youngsters in Euro action 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš won his sixteenth cap for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Russia in a European Championship Finals group game in Augsburg. 2008 – Future reds Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge featured in England’s goalless draw in the Under-19’s European Championships in the Czech Republic. On the same day, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh and András Simon all played for Hungary as they beat Spain 1-0 in the same competition. 2018 – Adam Lewis played for England Under-19’s in their 3-2 defeat of Turkey in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Ukraine in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. World Cup win 1994 - Thiago Alcântara's father Mazinho played for Brazil in the World Cup Final in California. The game ended goalless after extra time, with the Brazilians beating Italy 3-2 on penalties. Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saved one of the shoot-out spot-kicks. 1991 – Taffarel also represented his country as Brazil lost 3-2 to Argentina in a Copa América final round game in Chile. 1988 – Taffarel again played for Brazil, this time helping them to a 2-0 win over the host nation in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup Final in Sydney. Signing on 2020 – Midfielder Jake Cain signed a new contract with the reds. He had made his senior debut the preceding February in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield. 2021 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek signed pro terms, having joined the Academy the previous August. On the same day, future red Wataru Endō played for Japan Under-23’s in their 1-1 draw with Spain in Kobe.

Birth of a legend 1922 - Billy Liddell was born in Townhill, Dunfermline. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, signing as an amateur from Lochgelly Violet for £200 and turning professional nine months later. He left the club in 1961, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. He was on target on his 26th birthday as we beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with Albert Stubbins grabbing a brace and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet with his sixth and last reds goal. In comes Souey 1978 - Graeme Souness signed from Middlesbrough for £352,000 after 22 goals in 176 League games. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in six years as a reds player, netting 55 times in 359 games. His later time as Manager was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph, along with the controversial dismantling of the legendary Boot Room, and his infamous liaison with a certain tabloid newspaper. Debut of the Mighty Mullet 2001 - Jari Litmanen made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace in the first leg of the Worthington Cup Semi-final, with Andrejs Rubins opening the scoring for the Eagles. Vladimír Šmicer netted our goal immediately after Clinton Morrison had put the home side two up with the first of his four strikes against the reds. We emphatically turned things around in the Anfield return, progressing 6-2 on aggregate. Two-ton Joe 2024 – Joe Gomez played his 200th game for the reds as we beat Fulham 2-1 in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Willian opened the scoring with the most recent of his four goals past us, as we trailed at the break. However, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo netted in the second half. Up against the Potters 1970 - We won 2-0 at Stoke City’s Victoria Ground thanks to goals from Bobby Graham and Peter Thompson. 2009 – We were held to a goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium, with Steven Gerrard striking the crossbar late on. Jonah makes a splash 2004 - On-loan keeper Paul ‘Jonah’ Jones made his reds bow as we beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a Mark Delaney own goal. He therefore became our oldest post-war debutant aged 36 years and 267 days. 1981 - We also faced the Villains, going down 2-0 to the eventual champions in the Midlands thanks to goals from Peter Withe and Dennis Mortimer. Get Carter 1991 - Jimmy Carter signed from Millwall for £800,000 after twelve goals in 130 games for the Lions. He moved on to Arsenal for £500,000 after just nine months and eight appearances in his time at Anfield. More ins and outs 1949 – Left-winger Peter Kippax signed for the reds a few days after his contract with his hometown club Burnley was cancelled. He only made one senior appearance, moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 2007 - Left-winger Sebastián Leto signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. He signed pro terms in January 1968, making it onto the bench once for an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup game against Dundalk in September 1969. He moved on to Motherwell in July 1974. 1944 – Keeper Billy Molyneux was born. He played just one senior game as Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1965, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. 1973 – Director of Medicine & Performance Jonathan Power was born. The boyhood red joined the club during 2022/23, having previously worked for Brentford and the FA. 1984 - Our former American reserves centre-back Zak Whitbread was born in Houston, Texas. He made just seven senior appearances in the cups, and was sold to Millwall for £200,000 in June 2006 after a season-long loan spell at The New Den. North-east disappointment We have twice visited the North East in the FA Cup on this day in history. 1920 - We drew 1-1 at South Shields in the First Round, with Harry Lewis grabbing our goal and Harry Woods nabbing the first of his five strikes past us as Donald McKinlay reached a century of reds games. We won the Anfield replay, but went out to Huddersfield Town in the Fourth Round that season. 1953 - We lost 1-0 at Gateshead in the Third Round with left-winger Mervyn Jones and right-half Roy Saunders making their reds bows. Management moves 2012 - Nick Barmby was appointed Manager of Hull City on a permanent basis, staying in the role for just four months before he was sacked for speaking out about the owners and transfer funds. 2011 - Steve Clarke joined the reds as First-team Coach under King Kenny. On the same day, ex-reds reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Ipswich Town. 2002 - Steve Nicol was named Assistant Coach of New England Revolution. He was appointed permanent head coach ten months later, taking them to the final of the MLS play-offs in his first full season in charge. Sheila’s farewell 2008 - The funeral of Club Secretary Sheila Walsh took place at St. Mary’s The Virgin, Waterloo. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” Prince Kenny 1972 - Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish won the first of his four caps for Scotland Under-23’s as they beat a West German Olympics XI 1-0 at Hampden Park. A Merseyside centenary 1983 - We took part in a centenary friendly for Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. David Johnson, Phil Neal and Ronnie Whelan scored as we won 3-1. Internationals on target 2011 - Ex-red Harry Kewell struck for Australia as they beat India 4-0 in an AFC Asian Cup Finals group game in Qatar. 2022 – Sadio Mané scored from the spot as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cameroon, with Naby Keïta skippering Guinea as they beat Malawi 1-0 in the same group. Ryan in trouble 2011 - Ryan Babel was charged by the FA with improper conduct relating to tweeting about referee Howard Webb after our recent defeat at Manchester United. Other reds games 2000 – We lost 1-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, with Nathan Blake bagging the late winner. 1998 – Jamie Redknapp struck twice as we beat Wimbledon 2-0 at Anfield 1979 – Southend United held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round trip to a snowy Roots Hall. We won the replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1976 – We were held to a 3-3 draw by Ipswich Town, with Jimmy Case adding to a Kevin Keegan brace. He struck twice in nine games for the Hornets, returning to Vicarage Road for a second loan spell ten months later. 2012 – Ex-reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson was released by Hibernian after one goal in 34 outings. 2013 – Left-back Andrea Dossena joined U.S. Città di Palermo on loan from SSC Napoli, turning out eleven times for them. 2023 – Ex-red Andy Carroll signed a new contract in his second spell with Reading. 2024 - Fábio Carvalho joined Hull City on loan, He scored nine goals in his twenty games there. Missing out 2011 – Ex-red Xabi Alonso was voted into tenth in the FIFA Ballon d’Or for 2010, with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi winning the trophy for the second year in a row. Also in international action 2008 – Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Egypt in Abu Dhabi.

In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. Dave Hickson netted a brace for the reds, with Jim Harrop and Alan A’Court also on target. Other stars in action for the international side included Jimmy Armfield, Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, Stanley Matthews, Don Revie and Bert Trautmann. Goalscoring debuts 1929 - Forward Jimmy Smith netted a brace on his reds bow, to hand us a 2-1 win at Manchester United. Joe Spence struck the last of his five goals against the reds. 1968 - New record signing Alun Evans scored on his debut in our 4-0 win at home to Leicester City, with all four goals coming in the opening twelve minutes, courtesy also of Ron Yeats, a Tommy Smith penalty and Ian Callaghan. 1999 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell scored on his only senior reds appearance as we beat Hull City 4-2 in the second leg of our Worthington Cup Second Round tie, with Karl-Heinz Riedle netting a brace in his 76th and last appearance, and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. Jürgen’s European record 2023 - Jürgen Klopp secured his fiftieth European win in charge, a new club record, as we beat LASK 3-1 at the Raiffeisen Arena despite falling behind to a Florian Flecker strike. Darwin Núñez equalised from the spot after the break, with Luis Díaz putting us ahead. Mohamed Salah added a late third. More recent reds firsts 2021 – Joe Gomez skippered the reds for the first time as we won a League Cup Third Round tie 3-0 on our way to claiming the trophy for the ninth time. Right-back Conor Bradley and midfielders Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton all debuted, with keeper Caoimhín Kelleher saving a spot-kick to maintain our lead before the break. Takumi Minamino struck either side of a Divock Origi header. Bells toll again 2011 – Craig Bellamy struck the first goal in his second spell at Anfield as we won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Third Round of the League Cup, also smashing the crossbar with a 35-yard free-kick. A new record attendance of 21,897 at the American Express Community Stadium was set. Dirk Kuyt added a second goal late on, before Ashley Barnes converted a last-minute spot-kick for the home side. Ex-reds reserve Alan Navarro featured for the Seagulls. Other debutants 1935 - Forward Jack Balmer made his first reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 1901 - Left-half George Fleming made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sunderland, with Jack Cox on target. George Bowen made his second and final reds appearance in this game. First and last strikes 1895 - Centre-forward George Allan bagged the first of his 56 reds goals as we won 4-2 at Loughborough Town in a Second Division fixture. Davy Hannah bagged a brace with Jimmy Ross also on target. 1974 - Phil Boersma netted his thirtieth and final goal for the reds in our 3-0 top-flight defeat of Stoke City at Anfield. Steve Heighway rounded off the scoring, with the ball having been set rolling by a John Ritchie own goal. 1994 – John Scales netted his first reds goal as we beat Burnley 2-0 in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Robbie Fowler also scored. Macca off the mark 1985 - Kenny Dalglish scored at Goodison inside twenty seconds, to become the only ever Player/Manager to net in this fixture. Ian Rush equalled Harry Chambers’ club record for derby strikes with his eighth against the Blues before Steve McMahon nabbed his first reds goal from 25 yards, as we raced into a three-goal half-time lead. Graeme Sharp struck one of his seven derby goals after the break before Gary Lineker scored one of his six goals against us late on, but we hung on to win 3-2 with Lineker also rattling the crossbar. Phil Neal came on as a substitute, and so equalled Ian Callaghan’s record of 29 consecutive derby appearances, while Steve Nicol reached a century of reds outings. 1946 - Our other derby match on this day ended in a goalless draw at Anfield. Future reds on target 1991 - Gary McAllister scored the only goal of the game as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 2013 – Centre-back Dejan Lovren headed in as Southampton won 1-0 at Anfield, with fellow future reds Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert also featuring. Kenny at Hampden Kenny Dalglish twice turned out for the Scots at Hampden Park on this day. 1977 - He scored in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Czechoslovakia. 1983 - He played alongside captain Graeme Souness, and ex-red Frank McGarvey and John Wark, as Scotland beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly. Robbo for Ireland 1983 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a reds player, netting his final goal for the Republic of Ireland in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Iceland. Clubmate Mark Lawrenson also played. Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as the beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in another qualifier in Solna the same day. Reserve keepers loaned out 1990 - Mike Hooper joined Leicester City on loan. He played fifteen times for them, before returning to our second string. 1985 - Bob Bolder moved to Sunderland on a temporary basis, going on to join them permanently for £100,000 the following month. English reds beaten at home 1983 - Phil Neal won his fiftieth and final cap in England’s 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat by Denmark at Wembley, which meant they missed out on the Finals in France. Sammy Lee and future red John Barnes also played, while Ajax’s Jan Mølby came off the bench for the Danes. On the same day, Ian Rush and ex-red Joey Jones both played as Wales held Norway to a goalless draw in their qualifier in Oslo. Young England red debuts 1982 - Future reds John Barnes, Barry Venison and Paul Walsh all made their debuts for England Under-21’s as they won 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark, with fellow future red Steve McMahon also playing. On the same day, another England Under-21’s side was winning the first leg of their European Championships Final 3-1 at Bramall Lane. Sammy Lee and future red David Hodgson both played against West Germany. England eventually won 5-4 on aggregate. 2022 – Bobby Clark won his first cap for England Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat of the Netherlands in Spain. James Balagizi and Harvey Davies both debuted for England Under-20’s as they beat Chile 3-0 in the Costa Cálida Supercup in the same stadium, with Melkamu Frauendorf appearing for Germany Under-19’s for the first time as they thumped Armenia 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Gifhorn. Oakley Cannonier debuted for England Under-19’s in their 2-0 qualifying win over Montenegro in Denmark, with Luke Chambers also featuring. Trent Kone-Doherty won his first Under-17’s cap for the Republic of Ireland as a reds player in their 1-1 friendly draw with the Netherlands, with the Irish triumphing in a penalty shoot-out. Ex-reds coach Steve Clarke took charge of Scotland as they beat Ukraine 3-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game at Hampden Park. 2021 – Future red Kone-Doherty netted for the Irish Under-16’s while debuting in their 3-0 friendly win in Malta. Also on the move 1991 - Ex-red John Wark signed for Ipswich Town for the third time, this time on a free transfer from Middlesbrough. He spent another six seasons at Portman Road, helping them back into the top flight in 1992 and taking his total appearances for the Blues to 678. 2012 - Stephen Warnock joined Bolton Wanderers on loan from Aston Villa, playing fifteen times for the Trotters. 2020 - Mikel San José signed for Birmingham City, playing 28 times before terminating his contract by mutual consent the following May. 2021 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He took them from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season, leading them to 42 wins in 108 games in charge before being sacked in December 2023. Big wins 1907 – Forward Joe Hewitt nabbed a brace as we won 4-0 at Bolton Wanderers with James Bradley and Robbie Robinson also on the scoresheet. 1996 - Patrik Berger netted twice to add to strikes from John Barnes and Robbie Fowler and an Andy Myers own goal, when he knelt down to head back towards his keeper as we beat Chelsea 5-1 at Anfield. Frank Leboeuf struck the visitors’ late consolation. This game was the 129th consecutive reds game Robbie had played in, but he sat out the next one, our return meeting with Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Bennett’s treble 1918 - Thomas Bennett grabbed a hat-trick as we trounced Preston North End 8-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Donald McKinlay nabbed a brace, while Arthur Metcalf, Harry Lewis and Harold Wadsworth all also scored. 1940 - We also met the Lilywhites in a wartime fixture, this time losing 5-0 at Deepdale. Other reds games 1963 – We lost 3-0 at Sheffield United. 1957 – We beat Leyton Orient 3-0 in a Second Division encounter in L4 with Johnny Wheeler, Tony Rowley and Brian Jackson all on the scoresheet. 1914 – Arthur Metcalf and Jimmy Nicholl netted as we lost 4-2 at Blackburn Rovers. Danny Shea struck the last two of his ten goals against the reds, with Eddie Latheron also bagging a brace. 1912 – Manchester City beat the reds 2-1 at Anfield, with Billy Lacey nabbing our goal. Also in international action 1969 – Future red Peter Cormack played for Scotland as they drew a friendly with the Republic of Ireland 1-1 in Dublin. 1988 – Future red István Kozma featured for Hungary in their 3-0 friendly win in Iceland. 1993 – Future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Stavanger. 2007 – Future red Danny Wilson represented Scotland Under-17’s as they thrashed Liechtenstein 8-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Livingston. 2011 – Future reds keeper Danny Ward played for Wales Under-19’s in their 3-0 defeat by Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Slovenia. 2016 – Rafael Camacho featured for Portugal Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Scotland in a European Championships qualifier. 2022 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s as they beat Estonia 3-0 in the Tournoi International de Limoges.
