Spot on, that. And Liverpool fans ARE the best in the world and I'm not just saying that 'cos I'm biased and I am one. In recent years, we've seen evidence of this in Britain as well. We played three of our biggest rivals for the title (pf best fans) in a neutral venue (Cardiff), in big games with 50-50 split in fans. We were well better than Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea and better by a considerable margin on all of those occasions. And I firmly believe we ended any doubts anyone might have about it in Istanbul and furthermore, we DESERVED to see what we saw that night for being so great. Possibly Celtic could give us a run and I'd like to witness a big cup final between us before I go.

Might it not just be the old adage, "what comes around goes around" coming to pass? What I mean is that if you grew up a Leeds fan hating Man Utd and everything they stood for and then being lucky enough and talented enough to play for your home town team! Wow, what a privileged young man you would be, the prince of the world. But then you rat out your friends, your loyalty and your honour by signing for your most hated rivals for the love of money! I think what Smith did was the most despicable act in football's sordid recent history (yes, slightly worse than Rooney's) and he gets zero sympathy from me. His millions will cushion him against any hardships anyway.

I think it's a good shout. Let's not forget either that SG is not surrounded, as Souness was, with world-class players and a team mentality of winners. His contribution, therefore, is, I believe, greater than Souness's. Having written that, I'm not going to say one way or the other, I just reckon it's worth the debate.

Fair point but you can't have everything your own way to justify your argument. There are three other points to consider. 1. Pitches are much better (Chelsea and Wigan apart!) than they used to be. 2. Players aren't subjected to the same leverl of tackling which they used to be. It's almost as if it's a non-contact sport now, certainly in comparison to previous eras. 3. The diet and fitness regime modern players have make them less susceptible to injury and able to recover more quickly when injury strikes. Although I'm coming round to the "tiredness" argument having maybe some merit, The above needs to be taken into consideration if we are going to compare apples with apples.
