That was because he was unlucky enough to arrive at a time when a tried and trusted front 2 of Shearer & Sheringham were cemented as England's first choice strikers. Was very hard for him to break into the team on an ongoing basis. Had Shearer not been around, then I think Fowler would have been a top International striker.

Point taken on last season's Chelsea game. I had the one from 2004/05 in mind (where we lost unluckily 1-0), thinking that was last season's one. I do think that today's performance from when they scored until full time was probably the lowest of any of those games though. I just think most of us knew that once they scored that was it, but the way we fell away particularly in midfield, was alarming.

How could you forget Didi ? This thread title makes me think that we can expect to see and hear a lot of phrases with the words "Rafa" and "but" in them over the coming days. Any bets on how long before we hear that dreaded phrase of "he's taken us as far as he can" ?

I think we did. Of course our away record this year has been appalling. Added to that, and perhaps worse, is our 3 year record against Chelsea, ManU & Arsenal in the League. At a time when we thought we were as close as ever to these 3, we have been put firmly back in our box in each of the 3 league games against them. We played much better away to Chelsea, ManU and Arsenal last year and could count ourselves unlucky to lose all 3 (especially Chelsea & ManU). This year we were completely outplayed by them.

Zenden just doesn't seem to be up to the level required of him at this club. Gerrard's mind doesn't seem to be in it right now (temporary i hope) Gonzales is young and learning but I hope this season will stand to him. When 3 of your 4 midfielders are struggling, I think we have to expect the worst and we got it today.

......with our 5 most difficult away games behind us. Top 2 finish is out of the question, but (and I know that there was nothing from today's performance to suggest this) if we can re-build the confidence over the next 2 or 3 games, there is no reason whatsoever that we can't finish 3rd and pick up a Cup or two. *prays*

Rafa & Martin Jol are in a class of their own with post match interviews, but this is not what the media want. They want the Ferguson rant or the Wenger rant or the Mourinho rant. There should be a 30 minute cooling off period after games where managers do not talk to the media or to the referee. Then after 30 minutes the referee should have a 5 minute briefing with each manager separately. Only then should managers be allowed talk to the media. But I guess that would lessen the "circus" element of the game which the media crave.

Did anybody notice lampard for the 40 minutes or so that Spurs were all over them ? No, me neither.

Pompey were missing half their team yesterday, although I still think ManU would have won. When I heard Andy O Brien was playing, I thought that's a 3 goal start straight away.
