12 Sept 1987 (first home game of the season due to building work) Opposition: Oxford United Location In ground: Kop Line-up: Grobbelaar; Nicol, Vension, Gillespie, Hansen; Whelan, McMahon, Spackman, Barnes; Beardsley, Aldridge Aldridge 13, Barnes 37. First game for Barnes and Beardsley at Anfield. Aldridge slid one in and climbed on the railings at the Kop end. Second goal was a free kick. I can still see the Oxford wall, hear the ref’s whistle, ball came over the wall and into the net. I ended up near the corner flag on the Main Stand side, having started in the centre. Kop sang ‘Walshy needs a haircut’ at Paul Walsh before the game. Came up from London on the train for the day, was working there for the summer while in uni in Dublin. Club shop was a dungeon under the Kop. Been back 3 times since (1995, 1996, 2013). Brought my son from the US for the Nov 2013 game (v Fulham). Wish I could have made it this season.
