Leo No.8 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) Absolutely outstanding this year - at just 20 years old our most consistent player for me through the Woy days and into Kenny's reign and is clearly our best prospect since Gerrard and Owen came through (so in more than ten years). Had been hoping he'd move inside to centre half as I think he'll be brilliant there, but his performances have been so good in the right it would be foolish to change it. He has everything in his game - size and strength, pace (really quick for a big lad), two footed, good temperament and technically very good on the ball. What has surprised me is how good his delivery is - he has been overlapping and putting great balls into the box every game; the one last night for Johnson's header which was brilliantly saved was seriously good. Think its only a matter of time before he's called up into the England squad. People outside the club are starting to sit up and take notice, especially as he has put in some of his best performances against the top sides (good sign) like United and Chelsea. Even f*cking Charlie Nicholas was singing his praises last night, so he must be playing well! Not only does he have all the attributes but he has the demeanour of a top player - seems unphased by anything (like being thrown into a big CL game for his debut) and composed. Its such a boost for the club when you can bring a player of this potential through, saves the club huge amounts of money and its always a positive to have a local contingent. Delighted for the lad and for us, and he has the perfect manager to learn from now. Edited February 3, 2011 by Leo No.8
Bailo Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Need to be careful and not overplay him like Insua was. Although a winning team will help matters as well.
richwilks Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 He is quick, he chased Pennant down at one point last night and overtook him easily. Going to be a big player for us.
Toni Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 one of his big assests is the ever dangerous cross he can whip in...his crosses are top drawer, cant wait to see carroll slaughter em into the net. he is big and strong, has pace so i wouldnt move him from right back.. the fact that he can play centre-half is just another asset for him.
Leo No.8 Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 Need to be careful and not overplay him like Insua was. Although a winning team will help matters as well. Think he's different class to Insua though (and I quite liked Insua compared to many) in a physical sense. Much bigger, stronger, quicker. Insua is a good little footballer who struggles with the affliction of being built like a tubby little hobbit.
KD07 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Been well made up with the lad but the last fooking thing I want him linked to is fooking England. Get yer head down la' and make it here. You'll never go wrong.

The_Adder Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 He's excellent, he has the look of a top drawer player already. The fact he's got the current England right back's spot in our team says a lot and I'm quite liking our fullbacks (or should that now be wingbacks) at the moment - compare this to the start of the season when they were one of our, if not the biggest, weak spots it makes it even more satisfying.
Maldini Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 The kid is a bit special, just have to keep him fit.
Ethan Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Yep - I hope Capello leaves him for maybe another full season so he can bed in properly. Would hate to see him pick up injuries on International duty that would impact his development

A month ago our fullbacks looked absolutely dreadful and there was no easy solution in sight. Kenny walks in, decides Johnson is as good a leftback as he is rightback, tells him to be good again and decides that Kelly is obviously a firstteamer. E voila, fullback is sorted.
boohog Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Not being xenophobic or anything, but it would be nice if him and Carroll ended up being the next generation Carra and Gerrard for us. Sometimes footy just matters more to Northerners.
Beardsley Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Kelly chosen for the England U21 against Italy, 8. February.

Kahnee Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 He is quick, he chased Pennant down at one point last night and overtook him easily. Going to be a big player for us. Was really impressed by that. Didn't realise just how quick he was till he came away with the ball
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Think he's made RB his. Did we sign Warnock on loan? Johnson's doing well at LB so I'd leave as is. We may even not have to go shopping for a LB if things stay as they are

lfc003 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Had been hoping he'd move inside to centre half as I think he'll be brilliant there I Think his physical attributes suit playing right back more, He's got such a good engine and pace i think he'd be wasted at centre back. He reminds me of Stevie Finnan but not for how he plays, he's very consistent and a good 7/10 player every week like Finnan was for us.

Everyone keeps saying he should be CH but like you say, the energy he has would be wasted there. Hes a good attacking threat.

JonShar Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Really a very good player already, and as others have said his speed is the most surprising asset - he doesn't look quick, but he can move... and quickly too, it doesn't take him half a dozen strides to get going. Think he's still a bit slender for CB, so RB is perfect for him for now.
