Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of the New England Patriots NFL franchise, has once again spoken out about the possibility of buying into a Premier League soccer club, with Liverpool his favoured destination.

Kraft, who watched Liverpool's 2-0 win over Premier League Manchester United on television before seeing the Patriots beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, owned by the Glazer family, again expressed his interest in a Premier League move, but confirmed he would not enter a league where success is so dependent on finance. Kraft has often expressed his belief that the Premier League should have a salary cap and other measures in place, similar to the NFL, to encourage fairer competition.

We don't want to be a business where the wallet determines what kind of player you have," he told the press at the weekend, before adding to the New York Times: "At some point in the future there's a good possibility we could be involved."I'm a very big fan of the Premier League. I would probably want to see some kind of salary-cap potential to get into it, but we have all kinds of opportunities come to us in this area."

apparently he has come in for us before

Wikpedia:

In November 2005, Kraft met with Rick Parry, the Chief Executive of English Football team Liverpool.. Kraft was rumoured to be interested in investing money into the 2004-05 European Champions. Kraft told BBC Radio Five Live: "Liverpool is a great brand and it's something our family respects a lot. We're always interested in opportunities and growing, so you never know what can happen."

Can't see a salary cap being put in place in the game any time soon, so his curiosity/interest will probably remain a moot point unless he changes his mind over it.

I read a quote from him the other day where he said he wouldn't be interested unless salary caps were introduced.

He's got a damn long wait [not only will he be dead and gone, but likely his kids too] if he expects a salary cap. The wealthy clubs run the game and aren't going to go for it.

I do firmly believe though, that there should be rules that you live within your income. I realize that it would help the Mancs and trip up Chelsea and Man City, but it's only right. That said, hopefully we get our sugar daddy, load up with players and a new stadium to support it all before it kicks in.

Kraft would be a completely different type of Yank to the two current idiots IMO. He is more the type to build a proper ogranisation from the ground up through stability and sensible decision making.

He knows how to build a successful operation, The Patriots (and Revolution) are testimony to that. Contrastingly the current American owners in The Premier League all have awful NFL / MLB teams - Bucs, Browns, Rangers etc.

I'd love him to get involved. Don't think he couldn't afford us last time either, think it was other issues. I'd imagine googling him would bring up a lot more positive stuff than Hicks and Gillett.

Agreed, Kraft has more in common with Kroenke than the likes of H&G it seems. I can't imagine he'd be willing to fund H&G's departure however, although if they are ever forced by the banks to give us up for a song, maybe.

NYR was going to email him to get him involved. What happened, NYR?

My friend and I were at a birthday party with Jonathan a few years back and we spent hours talking. He said exactly what the Father is saying now. They genuinely love the Premier League and know what they are talking about. Because they are such good operators, the chance of having to randomly pour hundreds of millions into the club does not appeal to them. So, if things change and they get comfortable with the risk, I'd expect to see them back in right away. They'd run the club properly, we'd be financially successful, and we'd win trophies. The guys are winners.

All kidding aside, my mate who is my contact to all of these people nearly died two weeks ago. He is the guy who I famously called in Naples while he was body surfing. The poor b*gger had to have his gall bladder removed and he got a bacterial infection in his lungs. He had to be put into a coma to help him survive after having this huge lung surgery. He's still a bit touch-and-go, but hopefully he's going to make it.

For those of you who don;t know the story of the body surfing, here it is in a nutshell:

-- Some Norwegian lads posted that Coco was seen with two Americans on Stanley Park one Saturday mornig before a game.

-- I read it and called my mate to ask if he knew if Jonathan Kraft was over in Liverpool.

-- He was body surfing so his missus got him to call me when he came in from the surf.

-- I told him the story.

-- He called Jonathan Kraft to ask him what the f*ck he was doing in Liverpool.

-- Jonathan was astonished that my mate had found it out as it was all supposed to be hush-hush.

Think people did exactly that at the time and Nicol was very positive about the Krafts.

So we could have ended up with them or DIC, instead we get these two muppets. Ah well, you only get to sell the family silver once, might as well make a total c*nt of it.

Pretty much covered above all this.

Kraft could afford us, as he is wealthier than G&H combined if I remember right - and this is real wealth, not just paper assets. The thing always revolved around him being a proper businessman and sports fan and not being a mug in paying too much for the club first time around, and the madness we all agree upon generally of ever-spiralling players wages and transfer fees....at least he's honest up front in what he says and means, you have to agree.

He is a proper owner as someone mentioned the last time this came around, a bit like John Smith but with more money and vision. He says he'll build a stadium - he builds it. he says he wants success for his teams - they get success. He's no mega-rich arab Prince or potentate looking for a prestige project etc, but I'd love to have him on board - especially at the cost of one - or preferably both of the current pair. Sadly, i don't see it happening.

The one thing I really like about Kraft is that he is very good at keeping out of the sporting side of things. He'll pick a manager to run the team and let them do it. Both the Patriots and the revolution managers have been there for years and been sucessful. He gets on with providing the facilities and building the infrastructure to maximise the earnings on and off the pitch - exactly what we need.

I have no idea if he has the financial depth to be involved with Liverpool.
