gluesticks and seabiscuits - danish football

A wonderful team with some wonderful players - possibly my favourite international team of all time. Elkjaer was some player, both Laudrups were incredible and Olsen could possibly be the greatest defender of all time.

Cracking article too.

i'm probably romanticising them a bit but i remember them playing with brasilian flair, french don't-care and german efficiency. they had a blunt instrument in elkjaer but he was more than that. laudrup was gifted and morten olsen was an incredible libero. everyone else just seemed to enjoy themselves, apart from lerby. they were all pissheads and they had a fat lad as their fulcrum. and they had the coolest kits around then too.

man it was mad that his career was spent with such lowly clubs. the guy was amazing. cracking smoker too, 40 - 60 a day apparently. gifted.

He won the Italian title with Verona but that was about it really. Big, big drinker too.

Loved that Danish team. Reading that and watching the clips bring back some great memories.

Michael Laudrup was just an amazing genius of a player. Think he is too often forgotten about when people talk about the greats of the game. Came so close to joining us too...

We'd have got Laudrup but the Mancs would've got Barnes as we were spending the Rush money.

Its one transfer thats a pity but I can live with.

That was the 2nd time we tried to sign him. First time was 1983. Obviously we'll never know what could / would have been but just one of those players I would have absolutely loved to have played for us.

Some Laudrup skills...

Laudrup was incredible. Possibly underated as he should be right up there with the likes of Platini and Cruyff.

And yeah, lot's of talk of us buying him but he chose to go to Juve instead.

I can't imagine Molby speaking Danish even at home these days.

Hehe. :D

He does some commentating and interviews for Danish TV3 and maybe TV2. He's actually the only one who dares criticising our national team when they're schyte! His book is a very good read, too.

The country is in seventh heaven because we've qualified for the World Cup. Our current players are nowhere near as good as back then we played some cracking football, but a lot of hard work and some luck have done wonders! :P

Only Agger, Simon Kjær and Christian Poulsen (and possibly Bendtner) are playing at an international level. Hot-shot-midfielder Jakob Poulsen (AGF) will soon be there as well, but the squad as a whole is nowhere near the team from the 80s. We'll probably never have such a strong national side again, but then again, national sides are only useful for passing the time in silly season! :P

Oh, by the way... we should sign Simon Kjær! :D

....and in honour of the gluesticks: f*** OFF, brøndby!!

'a gloriously arrogant, gently caressed penalty that brought this superb commentary from Barry Davies: "'Where am I going to put it? You've gone the wrong way, haven't you.'"

This is why I love Davies. People say his style was pretentious, but i seriously think he was speaking his mind, his thoughts were poetry.

Great piece by the way, that Elkjaer is Zlatanesque in the compilation clip.

And if they'd had Schmiechel in 85 they might have won the lot judging from his performance in the 92 final.

Brilliant article. Cheers for posting that.

Some great videos linked there too. The goals against Ireland were ridiculous and Laudrup was pretty decent wasn't he...

Great stuff.

International football only ever gets interesting for me during the big tournaments and particularly if they involve teams that play football like this.
