Denmark international reveals injury torment

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has revealed that he considered retiring during his injury nightmare.

The Denmark international underwent an operation on a back problem during pre-season and only returned to the Reds' bench for Sunday's defeat at Chelsea.

Agger's career has been disrupted by a number of fitness setbacks and the 24-year-old has revealed that he considered quitting during his most recent injury.

"My back was hurting so badly that I considered stopping playing," he told Jyllandsposten.

"I asked myself if it was worth continuing playing. When you can't even lift your own child out of bed, then something is terribly wrong."

Agger has been named in Denmark's squad for the World Cup qualifier with Sweden on Saturday, a selection which has earned criticism from Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

The info in the last paragraph beggars belief. WTF do the Danes think they are up to? He hasn't played a proper game for ages and the yput him in a world cup squad!!!

'BAd' because we've carefully managed his return to fitness and because he will only have played 60 minutes against City and 0 against Chelsea for a reason i.e. he isn't ready yet.

This isn't abouch chucking him in for a c ouple of games when you don't need him again for a few months, this is about carefully managing a full return to fitness to allow him to play 90 minutes every week.

Until he has played a few games for our first team, Denmark can f*** off.

As soon as he was declared fit Denmark would always be there picking him up. Their game on Saturday is a massive one and he is by far the best CB in the country. Hopefully this will make him 100% match fit again sooner as opposed to jeopardising hit fitness or even injure him again.

Its worth remembering that Rafa rarely picks Agger ahead of Skrtel or Carragher anyway, so how he's gonna get gametime is up for debate.

Personally I wouldn't have him anywhere near the Denmark squad, but it's only us supporters that see him as our best CB by a mile, not the manager.

That was when Skrtel was doing really well so rightly kept his place on merit. He'll get his chance at some point regardless and he has to stay fit enough to take it.

Denmark only need to beat Sweden. So if they do they can rest him for the midweek game. If they do win and then don't rest him. That's when i'll start to get annoyed. Although i don't know if they even have a midweek game. edit: yes they do

I don't think Rafa has been happy with Aggers fitness while Skrtel has been here, it would be interesting to see if and when Agger is fully fit who gets the nod.

There's absolutely no chance of Agger being rested. He'll play Saturday and Wednesday, if available.

Agger and Simon Kjær will form our (Denmark's) central defence for the next ten years or so. Morten Olsen (Denmark manager) wants them to play as much as possible, so they'll definitely play against Sweden and Hungary. If we beat Sweden we'll be able to take it easy against Hungary, and Agger will enjoy getting some minutes under his belt.

As long as he doesn't get injured everyone benefits (except Sweden :P).

I would break the bank for Hangeland before anyone else. He is great on the ball, defends awesome, and has the Ariel threat we need for defensive and offensive set pieces.

30 million for Rio Ferdinand was breaking the bank. Around 10 million for Hangeland or Kjaer wouldnt be that to be fair. Still would be the most we spent of a defender though.

He probably injured himself trying to put his boots on. I've given up on him being fit and having a long run in the team, its easier than being disappointed everytime.
