TONY BARRETT: Thanks to all Liverpool FC fans for your great support

AS some readers will already know, this is my final Blood Red.

A fresh challenge awaits and soon this column will have a new – and no doubt more attractive – face at its head.

All that remains for me – and my apologies for going all Gwyneth Paltrow – is to thank everyone who has helped and supported me in my time as the ECHO’s LFC reporter.

It goes without saying the players, management, staff and hierarchy at Liverpool have been first rate and their understanding of the importance of the local media to local fans has made my job much easier than it could have been.

My colleagues at the ECHO have on occasions turned my sow’s ears into silk purses and for that I will be forever grateful.

But it is the readers that count most and in my time I have been fortunate enough to meet so many of you and receive countless e-mails and phone calls.

At times there has been praise and support and at times there has been criticism (usually totally deserved) and even abuse (again, often justified).

My one remaining wish is for my eventual successor to get to write that ECHO match report which confirms Liverpool have finally regained their title – because that really would be the most monumental of moments for the club, the fans and this city.

thankfully we can still read his article at the times. He really is liverpool through and through, always positive, and has some brilliant inside info that we all so rely on.

He also tries to keep his focus on the club and the fans rather than become fixated on pursuing petty personal vendettas, unlike some prose-impaired Mad-magazine lookalikes. Good luck to him.

Who's taking his plac at the Echo?

Please dont turn out like bascombe love your articles dont change.

Fact that he's going to the Times means this is unlikely to happen. Times has pretty good sports reporting. Oliver Kay (also from the Times) is another Liverpool fan who tends to write good pieces.

Yes - nice little quartet of Reds at the Times now, lets hope TB's work continues much as before.

Good luck Tony.

Bascombe had lost all credibility a long time before he left the Echo.

Barrett always retained his (more than in fact) and was the stand out journalist for me at what has become an abosulte dogs*** newspaper (it was those 'Six in the City' columns that were the final straw for me, especially Nick Peet and Amanda Harrington).

Pleased for him - think the Times will become my daily of choice now. I've always bought the Guardian when I get a daily becuase it is closest to where I am politically, but the Times sports coverage s***s all over it.

It's got worse. Last two years it's been horrific.

I bought one the other day, funnily enough, for the train. Only ended up reading the sport and doing the crosswords though.

I did enjoy the headline 'A Delph Fee'. That's better than you'd get in the London Lite.

I buy it on a Saturday for the Sport.

I check Barrett's articles too.
