Benitez said: "He did really well in Germany last season, scoring plenty of goals, and he has told me that he wants to stay at the club and fight for his position.

"I have told him that will be difficult with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard as our first-choice strikers. But he realises this and the players we have in the squad.

"But he also knows that this club always plays more than 60 games a season and that means there are opportunities. He will fight for his place."

"Voronin is doing well. Last pre-season he also did really well for us and then when he went on loan he had a very good season in Germany with Hertha Berlin.

"He has game intelligence, which is something we are always looking for.

"At this moment he is a Liverpool player. But it depends on him, he is continuing to work hard and is playing well so he will have a chance.

"It is good to have him back. When we signed him we were looking for a player who could play 'between the lines' as a second striker with quality."

Fair enough. I'm happy to have him on the bench if he's ready to keep his head down and work hard.

Left winger it is, then. And a midfielder and Rafa almost everytime refers to Stevie as a forward.

Fair enough. I'm happy for anyone to be part of the squad if they're going to battle hard for a place and try and earn it on merit. Benayoun did pretty much exactly that last season and it paid dividends for all concerned.

Elisha has said he will stay as a squad player.

As long as that's it. Can't see Rafa playing him from the start in any big league game, unless injury forces his hand.

Which suits me fine. Some of his performances the season before last were a disgrace.

Whatever he said, whatever he did, he didn't mean it. I just want you for back up for good!

not sure I fixed that for you but hey ho! I am more worried that I know the lyrics.......oh god pass the pistol somebody please

I can perhaps understand Rafa wanting to keep him if he sees him as a someone to play "between the lines as a second striker". He can therefore allow us to keep on playing 4-4-1-1 when Gerrard is out (although I'd have thought Benayoun could do a better job than Voronin). We still need cover for Torres, though. Ngog isn't ready and Babel just doesn't fit the bill.

He's blatantly up for sale but is crap so wont get a decent bid and we are stuck with him.

Probably about right. I'd cry if I had to watch him saunter about the pitch for any more than a few sub appearances here and there and league cup games.

Doubt we will though.

I think there has to come in quite a good offer for Rafa to sell him. He doesn't seem very eager to buy a new striker and is probably happy enough with Voronin/N'Gog/Kuyt/Babel as cover for Torres, as long as money is as tight as it seems to be atm.

His Agent should send a brochure to Man City and put all references to 'attacker' and 'striker' in bolded font !

The Adebayor one worked wonders :D

Maybe the fans should create one for him.

Slight overreaction. The crowd were a disgrace though, that's for certain.

Nope. Watched him on more than one occasion play like he didn't even want to be there - not making an effort, stopping still instead of chasing for balls and lapping out of everything.

Can forgive a player for just being s*** but getting your finger out and playing like you give a s*** is the least we should expect

He was wearing a white shirt in one game that i can vagulely remember. Boro away maybe?

Horrible effort in that one

Arsenal at the Emirates in the middle game of the triple header was the one that stands out for me. Before his injury I remember him working really hard.
