Gerrard on the right - is this now impossible?

look at the players we picked last night - lots of great players...that's the first thing we reacted to when we heard the team

then, worry set in - surely not Carra RB and Kuyt RM - the slowest bluntest right side imaginable and Kuyt has proven innefective at RM in a 4-4-2 time and time again

lets say Rafa didn't want to play Babel at wide right 'cos he doesn't trust him, and he wanted Kuyt on the pitch as always

that only left one option and that was Stevie G on the right and Kuyt up with Torres, with Masch in the middle and Keane on the bench

what would have happened, had we played that formation?

more pace, penetration, crosses from the right, more threat up front as Kuyt would have helped Torres so much more

what would we have lost in the middle? we would have been fine with Masch, would have at least won more tackles

anyone who has ever watched us would surely agree that the right side was an accident waiting to happen. Gerrard was a proven success at RM in 2006, so what is the problem?

Masch and Alonso in the middle and Gerrard on the right seems to be the logical solution but there seems to be some verbal agreement that Gerrard doesn't play there. Shame because he was great on the right the season we won the champions league, and Kuyt adds little other than work-rate in that position.

I wouldn't start Gerrard there (alongside Torres, please) but in hindsight he could have gone there after we scored and provided more strength when we were going backwards last ten.

I can see why from the point of view of wanting him in the middle

but yesterday's right side was guaranteed to handicap us

ANYTHING would have been better

I just don't get why we keep scoring tactical own goals before a ball is kicked

think there is a way of doing this without unsettling the 'Gerrard is only ever great when played through the middle brigade'...

to my mind the best Rafa teams, the best set up for Torres, and the best chance at getting anything out of Keana go like this...

4-2-3-1 - torres proved during the Euros that when left up front alone with quality service and intelligent runners that he can destroy defences. When Villa got injured - Torres shone!

Also, the best 2 holding midfielders we have to control games are Masch and Alonso - one's a terrier for the ball and the other is a genius at distributing it. We are so much more balanced when they are running that show.

That leaves 3 creative players to play behind Torres...

Riera has nailed the left sided berth...and if Aurelio or Insua plays we have genuine overlapping options...

That leaves the middle and the right. I think Keane and Gerrard have the game intelligence to work this between them... I have no doubt that Gerrard can dominate the game from the centre-right position and I have no doubt that Keana can play through the middle and interchange with Gerrard... For those who want to see it on a formation I'd have it start like this but give Gerrard and Keane the freedom to use their game intelligence to link up play...

Reina

Arbeloa Carra/Agger/Skrtl/Hyypia (any 2 will do!) Aurelio / Insua

Masch Alonso

Gerrard Keane Reira

Torres

It was in that formation that Gerrard scored over 20 goals for goodness sake and that's when little Luis played where Keane is, Baros where Torres is, and Biscan of all people where Masch is!!!

If Keane doesn't step up in that team I'd get Kuyt in and tell him and Gerrard to work the centre-right between em...

anyway - here we go with a formation thread but with the players we lose more than we gain when Gerrard plays centre mid in a 4-4-2....

100% correct

other variation: Gerrard in the middle of the three and Kuyt right

Keane sold, sadly

Wrong on so many counts. Sorry, I respect your views but we can't keep shifting Gerrard all over the park to plug holes is the first problem with your tactical plan, second we only had a problem down the right when Kuyt was moved into the centre, third our problems are with other areas.

why not, exactly? i.e. says who? worked in 2005 incl the CL final and 2006

do you not agree that we are invariably s*** when Kuyt is on the right in a 4 man midfield?

and with Carra behind him...imagine being Moyes - seeing that immediately gives you far less to worry about when planning your defence. No threat down the right, guaranteed all game

MAXI rodrigues or SWP for RM position. not dirk undropable feckin kuyt my a***

I think he's trying to say that Dirk Kuyt is simply UNDROPPABLE b/c he WORKS HARD & can play COMPACT. Therefore, Kuyt is obviously our answer to the right of midfield. Whoever thinks otherwise should just F*CK OFF!

I can definatly see the arguement for moving Stevie to the right, but, he is imo, the best in the world at that position just behind Torres. I sometimes critisize Rafa for making a simple game too complicated. so, in an ideal world you should play your best players in their best positions. Stevie to stay in the middle with Torres for me.

I thought Kuyt was probably MOTM on Monday evening

This a brand of sarcasm, Will? I thought he was pathetic.

Any discussion of dropping Kuyt is strictly forbidden.

Surfaris' obsession

When I saw your name as the last poster on this thread, I literally had no clue that it would be an anti-Kuyt post. Imagine my surprise.

I disagree I wouldn't put Gerrard on the right, play him off Torres with Riera on the left Kuyt on the right with Masch and Alonso in the holding roles. That proved to be our best formation last year and would be the one I would like to see for the run in.

I think it's hilarious that Rafa picks a s**** side to play Eveton exactly like he did against Stoke away and there's a thread questioning Gerrard!

We're weak both left and right fullback and midfield, and have been for a few years now. Rafa spends £20M on a forward we are struggling to fit in our team without changing our m ost successful formation instead of buying a solution to our wide areas and you're on here lamenting Gerrard 'refusing' to play RM?????

Carragher is the most negative RB in the world, distribution poor at best, little pace, little attacking threat. Agger is the only ball player we have in our defenders and he isn't getting picked. We're f***ing hoofing everything at present and it's Gerrards fault.

You aint gonna like this but the managers the problem, only my opinion of course.
