This is absurd. Either you have a competition with champions only and have it a straight knock out, or keep it as it is, a competition for the best teams in Europe.

 

How is it gonna make it a better competition to have the champions of Latvia in there instead of one of the top teams from a top European league. Wouldn't be surprised if Platini's next step is to make the 3rd and 4th placed English teams play off against each other (but not do the same for any other European league) just to absolutely ensure a reduction in the number of English teams.

 

Just a couple weeks ago he was going on (again) about banning teams with debt, and was only mentioning English teams. Wonder if he'd ban Real Madrid....

I think its a decent Idea

 

Look at cluj and especially Anorthosis Famagusta, they have done very well this season, much better than the Likes of PSV, Marsille and fiorintina

 

Also the third place team from england will go straight in

Any way of making it more like the old EC is fine by me, but all this really does it make it a bit harder for 4th place to qualify, and gives a free pass to 3rd place. What if they finish level on points, hardly fair is it?

It should be done on a sliding scale - 4th place has to play 2 games, 3rd place 1, 1st and 2nd - 0

it is possible the quality will be reduced as well, but the likelihood of there being more than 1 or 2 of the elite 20 or so clubs who are in every year not qualifying is very slim i'd say.

Should make the Uefa Cup better too.

Teams finishing 3rd/4th have it far too easy to qualify at the moment though so i'd give any change a chance*

 

 

* Of course my stance changes if we finish out of the top 2.

64 teams - 53 champions straight in with 2nd place from top 11 leagues - bollix to 3/4th place. Share the money more evenly rather than load it all to the winners/finalists.

 

Straight draw throughout.

 

Make the Uefa cup a proper knouckout competition and re-introduce the CwC.

What bothers me is the fact that Platini seems to be trying to devise as many reasons as possible to try to ensure English teams don't dominate. Dressing it up as if he actually cares about teams from Latvia is a joke.

I know that but if they hadn't changed it from it's original format it wouldn't have happened either. Of course I'm not trying to devalue our victory but an open draw of the Champions of respective countries and the best 'other sides' of the previous season from the top leagues makes it more interesting.

I fail to see much difference, if anything it's better for England because 3 teams automatically go through rather than 2. Everton drew Real Betis when they finished 4th didn't they. It looks like it's making it harder for the run of the mill clubs from France, Germany and Italy rather than harder for English clubs.

 

The idea of more champions is always a good one.

Platini won't be happy until the worst non-league sides from each country in Europe qualify to play France's top teams every year and the French sides humiliate them while smoking gitanes and wearing rolled down socks.

A decent mid-long term idea. Current weaker leagues champions often have to face a tough side in qualifying to get into the CL Groups, which affects their chances of a decent exposure at the top level, affecting their chances of keeping their best players and the cash that comes with. It should at least help slow the inevitable drip of players moving up the food chain, so you have as we do, sides strolling to 4th place in their league and strolling to the group stage of the CL

They have to do something - the 'champions' league is the WORST competition that has ever existed in football. Ever.

 

I was sat there thinking when we were 1-0 down to Athletico at home - we could be 500-0 down and still qualify.

 

Utterly absurd competition - and as I've said elsewhere - 5 years ago - nearly 100% of the ST holders around me went to all the 'Champions' League fixtures. 3 years ago - maybe 50% - this season? Me and one other lad.

 

Next season? I don't think I'll bother.

 

Ridiculous competition. They need to make it the Champions of each country ONLY and they need to make it a knockout from the off.

it wouldn't be a league then would it.

and its a far better format than the uefa cup.

The UEFA cup also, I agree, is awful.

 

Made even worse by the losers from the 'Champions' League being able to get into it.

 

The whole of European competition needs to be changed and it needs to be changed soon - can't be just a few people bored of this format of competition.

 

It's clearly nothing to do with football - and all to do with 'media branding', money and 'profile'

 

If fans that used to go to 100% of home games can no longer be bothered attending then it's hardly the peak of football is it?

 

I know I won't be going next season to European competition if it stays as it is.

That is the biggest disgrace in the whole of football, you should never ever parachute into a competition from another. So pleased that when we won it we won it from scratch.

 

The other thing that riles me is the big teams getting a bye in the Carling Cup because of European commitments. That's what a squad is for isn't it ? All premier league teams should enter the competition at the same stage.

It only needs a few tweaks I reckon.

 

1. Give the UEFA cup winner a place in the Champions League

2. remove the CL drop-outs getting into the UEFA.

3. champions from all countries go into the final stages for top 16 countries, into 3rd qualifying for next 16 and 2nd round for the rest

4. 2nd place go into 2nd round

5. Any 3rd place or 4th place teams who qualify, go into the first round.

 

If you are not the champions then you should have to work for it. Most leagues have 2 strong teams so giving the top 2 in the stronger league makes sense. But the rest should have to work for it.
