sutty Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Was thinking about Alonso just before when I saw in the gossip column that Arsenal are supposed to be preparing a fresh bid for him in January... If that one decision point had gone the other way, we'd have had Barry playing for us and Alonso would have been showing his current form for them. How sickening would that be? Another one is Gascoigne... If Kenny had been given that cash, Gascoigne would have signed, Kenny might have stayed on as manager, Liverpool might have won a couple more leagues, Souness might never have happened. Makes you think
Jarg Armani Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I was thinking a similar thing about Anelka instead of Diouf. Madness by Wenger not signing Xabi by the way, he's EXACTLY what they need.
sutty Posted December 9, 2008 Author Posted December 9, 2008 I was thinking a similar thing about Anelka instead of Diouf. Madness by Wenger not signing Xabi by the way, he's EXACTLY what they need. Diouf was a bit more complicated though, because that wasn't just Diouf (who wasn't a terrible player, just a massive c***) it was the whole raft of s*** that came in with him. Houllier's heart thing might have been more of a pivotal moment actually. Agree on Arsenal. That's exactly why I was thinking about it. Alonso has been tremendous and has proved me bang wrong about the whole barry thing. I saw that headline and thought they might as well have written "Arsenal are preparing to close the empty stable door in January"
Swagger Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Its endless. Houllier wanted Essien. Souness wanted Roy Keane. Rafa came close to agreeing with Del Nido for Dani Alves. Diouf instead of Anelka was a joke.
Leo No.8 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) Definitely - think there are a lot of transfer decisions which could have altered history, particularly around the Souness era. What if Souness would have signed Cantona when he had the chance before he went to Leeds? Whatever people think of him he won the title with Leeds then went to United and was the catalyst for them doing the same. Souness also tried to sign Roy Keane but he chose to go to United. Again, people hate him because he played for United for years but had he played for us how much better would we have been with him the centre of our midfield? If we win the title this season we may look back on the Alonso situation and say 'what if' as well but with the outcome being positive instead. Still think Barry would be great here but not at the expense of Xabi who is back in world class form. I'd like to see both players at the club and would sell Lucas to fund the Barry move. If that one decision point had gone the other way, we'd have had Barry playing for us and Alonso would have been showing his current form for them. How sickening would that be? or maybe Barry would play really well having secured his 'dream move' (like Robbie Keane ) and Xabi hated that London and couldn't settle, suffered terrible form and ended up getting boooed off instead of Eboue I was thinking a similar thing about Anelka instead of Diouf. Madness by Wenger not signing Xabi by the way, he's EXACTLY what they need. they need a bit of steel/ a destroyer in their side - more mascherano than alonso
alias75 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I think one of the reasons Arsenal didnt get Xabi when he was available is they offered something like £12million. Rafa admitted in order to get the money for Barry selling Alonso was probably the best way to do it but he also said numerous times he wouldn't sell him on the cheap. Obviously this season his form has picked up to the point where hes been our best player this season, it was quite amusing that the recent stories linking him with Arsenal quote a £12 million fee again. If Rafa wasn't prepared to accept £12 million at the beginning of the season when Alonso had come off quite a poor season why would he sell him now for the same fee given hes been our best player this season?
RedHarvest Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I reckon Rafa dodged a bullet there with Alonso, although there are some who believe it was all a cunning plan on his part to give Xabi the proverbial kick-up-the-a*** and miraculously recover his form.
Bigal Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 what would have happened if we had signed Lee Bowyer?

Bigal Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 He's gone to s*** given how good he was for Leeds The horrible b*****d I am glad to have seen that now, but he would have played for us. makes me glad we got the Sheriff in a way

The thing is with the souness stuff though is that he made so many bad decisions that it's difficult to call any one of them pivotal. The James nonsense under evans was pivotal for instance. If the playstation hadn't been invented, we'd have been champions. f***ing sony

Bailo Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 He's gone to s*** given how good he was for Leeds The horrible b*****dThat is really strange, as he was outstanding for Leeds, ran pretty much every game for them.
Hassony Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) Maradona nearly signed for sheffield united! and didn't Oldham (I think Sharp was the manager at the time) reject Sami Hyypia after a trial there! Edited December 9, 2008 by Hassony

Boca Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Houllier had agreed a fee with West Ham for Marc Vivien Foe only for him to fail a medical. Didi signed soon after as far as I can remember.
Bo Benn Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) Houllier had agreed a fee with West Ham for Marc Vivien Foe only for him to fail a medical. suppose the lad should have had more medicals, or something. Edited December 9, 2008 by obey Hysén
matty Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 We'd have beaten Stoke, Fulham and West Ham with Barry. 7 points clear.
