arsenal in '89 - the internet reaction

just on the back of a post about fans getting ahead of themselves, what do you think the reaction would have been to us losing to arsenal in 1989 with the last kick of the season were the internet around then? the web has undoubtedly changed fan behaviour and maybe even in partnership with other media given rise to a whole new breed of fan, or perhaps it could be argued that different types of fans have always been around, they just have bigger platforms on which to air their views these days.

what would have been the response to the arsenal defeat, taking that match in isolation? would people have gone spare at barnes for not keeping the ball in the corner? or at mcmahon for his one-minute-to-go thing? would the ref have been blamed for allowing arsenal's first goal? interesting to consider how the match would have been hyped up and presented by sky as well, especially in the light of hillsborough.

Sack Robinson

Sack Dalglish.

WTF was Barnes doing the useless git. We should have signed Whiteside instead.

The 14 year old Spike would still have cried.

Where we are now in football, the hype etc is part of a wider cultural change anyway. I honestly don't think it would be as bad as it would if it happened now.

My internet connection went down and the stream froze just as Thomas was running through. It took me 30 minutes to find out if he'd scored or not

The longest half hour of my life

I would have been on here complaining that our open, pass and move style had been found out and that Arsenal's disciplined, pragmatic style ('no frills') was the future. Like Alanis Morissette, I did not understand irony back then....

I still can't believe that game. Those kind of losses just never happened at Anfield. That's what I was telling all my Gooner mates before the game anyway....

I would have been as livid as a cut snake after my tears had dried up.

I have actually been waiting for the filth to start comparing this current Liverpool team to that Arsenal team, as soon as it was apparent that we have a genuine shot at the title. You just wait, some group of dicks on one of their fora will start making the comparision.

not sure about that man, that arsenal team's main selling point was its defence, and as well as our defence keeps playing and as good as we know our goalkeeper is, the pundits will only ever really focus on two players for us. however good alonso is this season for example, were we to win the title it'd be solely down to us having gerrard and torres.

Granted but with the filth, I meant United fans. They'll do their best to reduce the achievement and start saying things like "the worst / most boring champions since Arsenal under Graham". It serves to try denigrate our achievement and cast us unfavourably toward them. It'll happen, wait and see!

I would have said

"FFS, we will never win this again now for 20 years"

There wouldn't have been many who would have believed that.

We won it the following season didn't we?

I think the most important thing was what we learned from that match. And that was subsequently that Michael Thomas should never have played at Anfield again.

Christ. We haven't even got to the stage where we even dare talk up our own chances and we're already postulating about how others will denigrate our achievement.

Now that's the f*cking internet for ya.

Matty to thread please

what concerns me most is how we'll handle being Champions next season, whether we'll kick on and dominate for the next decade or collapse out of the Top 4 and be relegated by 2011

it'll definitely be one of the two and i haven't slept in days thinking about it

How bothered we're most fans after that game?

I've always wondered about it because I was only 8 at the time (and not from Liverpool) and I cried, but at the same time I really had no conception of just what had happened at Hillsborough.

I realise it wasn't as if people just sacked it off as a bad day, but was there the same depth of feeling as there would have been if it had happened the year before for example?

This was the first time I went to a match wearing a suit. The plan was to celebrate the title in a dignified way and then have a drink for our lost friends.

As soon as the Arsenal players handed out flowers to the crowd and laid one in the Kop net, you knew then that it wasn't going to happen.

I was seated in the Anfield Road next to the Gunners, I shook their hands and congratulated them one by one.

We went the pub, had a pint for our lost friends, and I do mean ONE pint, then went home. Somehow it didn't seem right to get pissed that night......for me anyway.

I was gutted but very proud. After Hillsborough the team had been magnificent and it felt like winning the league would be our way of honouring those that had died.

I remember seeing the players like Aldo and the state they got themselves into, the season had gone on 5 minutes too long. Felt more sorry for the players than the supporters that night. They stood no chance for ages that season and then played on through everything to get one hand on the title. It was an incredible effort to get there. It was more important to them than to us, I think. The cup final was more significant for me that year, having a chance for the city to stand together and have it to ourselves.

It was very hard to explain how it felt to lose that game. The atmosphere after the game was kinda surreal, for me anyway. Like there was too much to actually take in. Just glad the season was over really.
