How can a Ref make so many mistakes and keep his job?

In any other profession if you fail to perform you get sacked and replaced with someone who can do the job and yet somehow Rob Styles still gets to umpire in the best league in the world. Surely the best league in the world should have the best referees in the world but yet we are forced to accept a group which continually underperform and in some cases(Rob Styles) want to be the difference in the game.

Todays display by Rob Styles was perhaps the worst umpiring display i've ever seen, regardless of the Pen decision, the 10 mins of play leading up to that decison where a disgrace. My mate who is not overly interested in Football watched the man U game with me and even he said Rob Styles was like Man U's 12th man at times.

Mike Riley wasn't much better, but I dont want to complain too much cause he didnt change the game but for the Bolton fans out there I feel your pain. Rob Styles was the difference in the game today and should retire from professional umpiring as soon as possible. He must be adicted to seeing his name in the papers, maybe he thinks any publicity is good publicity but for mine he is a disgrace to the game. I cringe at the thought of him umpiring another Liverpool game.

I was watching it; it was an absolutely appalling decision. Bolton were matching them up to then and could easily have been ahead.

Dreadful performance from the referee.

This is why technology will not be embraced by football in the way it has other sports, as it will show up just how poor the current crop of referees are in general.

Also, in most other sports the referees are respected properly and are not forced to respect them.

Watching Rugby last night and the referee was superb, handled the game brilliantly. He told both skippers any backchat and he would punish them, which he did. The worst thing football did in recent years was recind the 10-yard rule for dissent.

I thought MotD nailed it.

It delighted in showing a couple of his past howlers and his suspensions. Shearer also called for refs to come out and explain their decisions; anyone would respect someone who came out and said "I fecked up".

Whereas right now he looks inept at best and corrupt at worst.

The thing is that in each of the pennos motd highlighted Styles had a perfect view and still fecked up. :o

I may be the only Red who wasn't 100% convinced the Chelsea penalty shouldn't have stood.

But the Sun Jihai shoulder charge and the one today are so ludicrous that, IMO, the most likely explanation is that in each case Styles' train of thought was "I've been told I have to give a penalty... I hope something comes up soon... I don't want to annoy them... oooh, he's on the floor... whistle... feck, that looks a bit dubious actually...".

Or not, as the (legal) case may be.

He needs to be investigated, those 3 decisions on MOTD surely cant just be down to incompetence? They were absolutely horrendous and he was staring with a clear view at all 3.

He should be nowhere near the premiership, he shouldnt of been after what he did to us in the Chelsea game yet is still here, earning his big money and f***ing over team after team.

standard of refereeing is abysmal at the moment. styles, riley and bennett shouldn't be anywhere near the premiership. they've all proved over and over again they're incapable of handling big games.

in many cases he players dont help things, but Styles takes being s*** to a whole new level. he is getting basic decisions wrong repeatedly, its not even as if they are controversial, they are just bad decisions and its making a mockery of the game

i actually reckon he might be taking back handers, and i am serious about this. some of his decisions, and important ones at that, defy belief.

either he's got no concentration & is in lala land some/most of the time or the latter is true

How far out are refs decided? When are we gonna be playing Russian roulette with his decision making?

I - like a few on here - have actually refereed. It's (generally) a thankless job & it's f***ing difficult, a nano-second's lapse in concentration & you can make a balls-up; hopefully not severe, more like a throw the wrong-way; so I'm reticent to slate refs usually, but this bloke's something else

EDIT

and then the 'one without grace or class'

'I was surprised,' said Ferguson of the decision. 'I haven't seen it again but it looked to me as if their player got his foot on the ball. None the less, Rob turned down four or five for us last year, so maybe we got payback today - but he still owes us four!

This is NOTHING to do with Styles being a 'bad referee'.

f*** all.

It's to do with the bent league.

Liverpool have had TWO Goals ruled out in bulls*** circumstances.

Riley knew Ronaldo dove the other day and gave the freekick - apologising for it - with a smile. The 'penalty' would be astonishing given the position of the ref would have been astonishing - IF the league wasn't bent. The same ref made another decision last season to derail us when Malouda jumped into our player. The goal yesterday disallowed was a f***ing disgrace. The goal against Stoke being disallowed was a f***ing disgrace.

Anyone thinking the league is not utterly corrupt is living in cloud cuckoo land.

The FA will not take action against him because he is following their orders. For some reaon they want these decisions to happen and continue.

The only answer is to get shot of the FA in entirety and start again with people that aren't utterly corrupt.

just seen the mancs' peno incident and that's absolutely disgraceful refereeing. shameful s***.

i'm going to defend ronaldo in this instance though, what he did was just professional, get up and score the penalty. you take what you're given.

There is deffo a sense of "that'll do...ah feck it I'll just get rotten again tonight, feck MOTD" about them all.

Incompetent, corrupt or simply inadequate and wanting to get in someone's good books?

'I was surprised,' said Ferguson of the decision. 'I haven't seen it again but it looked to me as if their player got his foot on the ball. None the less, Rob turned down four or five for us last year, so maybe we got payback today - but he still owes us four!

And thus is (not so) subtle pressure applied.

I don't think he or anyone even appealed for it

he was probably worried that if he didn't give ronaldo a penalty ferguson will have a go at him and that will mean no more matches for him at the old toilet

i agree with this. he was in the perfect position on sat to see how good a tackle that was. it is beyond belief that someone can genuinely call that a pen.

The Chelsea penalty given against us was in the 62nd minute.

The one against us was. The one yesterday was about 60 odd mins in.

Shiftiness.

Spread betting, time of goal bets, penalty scored in second half wagers, or just trying to influence the result late on in the game - these are all a selection of random verbs and nouns that have nothing to do with the thread title.

I've never truly bought into the idea that any of the referees in the Premier League are actually corrupt per se but after yesterday I am seriously starting to question it. Seeing the replay and the view Rob Styles had of the incident, I genuinely am not sure what other explanation there can be. very bizarre.

Refs are ripping off fans on a wholesale basis, especially one's like Riley - going from memory, he blew up for 43 fouls on Saturday, add that to the 7 cards he issued, he seriously reduced the amount of time the ball was in play. I realise that we can't expect to see the ball in play for the full 90 mins, but I do expect it to be more than 40 or 45 mins.

Refs like Styles, Bennett and Riley are ruining the game for the hundreds of 1000s fans who watch the game worldwide just through their ineptitude/inconsistancy, let alone the huge amount of money it costs fans and clubs. It's beyond belief that the FA allows just one person per game to spoil it for so many without doing anything to redress this.

The Bolton players are saying that even some manc players were telling the ref that it was no penalty (Fletcher and Tevez apparantley) fair play to them if true and don't see why it wouldn't be. that ref is seriously suspect.
