stressederic Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 HYYPIA SET TO PEN NEW DEAL Jimmy Rice 26 March 2008 Sami Hyypia looks set to sign a new contract this weekend to keep him at Anfield beyond the summer. The veteran defender's current deal runs out at the end of the season, but Rafa Benitez today spoke of his confidence that talks on an extension would be concluded this week. He said: "Rick Parry is due to talk to Sami's agent this weekend and hopefully everything will then be finished." The extension means Hyypia will join a select band of Reds who've spent more than a decade at the club, with the Finn arriving under Gerard Houllier back in 1999. The 34-year-old has made no secret of his desire to remain on Merseyside. Earlier this year, he said: "It would be very nice to get to 10 years at the club but I'm just concentrating on playing well. "Whether I stay wouldn't depend on how many games I play. I'm not like that. I'm not interested in somebody promising me something. "If we have four centre backs then everyone fights for their place and performances should determine who plays. "If I keep playing well then it'll be difficult for the manager to change things." Hyypia was a key part of the 2001 treble-winning campaign, proving to be a rock at the back alongside Stephane Henchoz. He was one of the stand-out performers on the road to Champions League glory in Istanbul, scoring a cool volley which proved crucial in the quarter-final defeat of Juventus. The defender has already notched up 37 appearances this season despite turning 34 last October, and is considered by many a contender for Liverpool's player of the season. .tv Legend
fyds Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 I'd be very happy to see him finish with us - and maybe stay on in some capacity.
Tones Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Good news. You would think he would also make a good defensive coach, so could be at the club for a bit longer too.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 cool. Can't see Crouch signing his though - when was the last time he played?
Hassony Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Would hate to see him play for a no mark team like Fulham or newcastle I hope he finishes his career with Liverpool and complete his set of medals
Sion Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 "Rick Parry is due to talk to Sami's agent this weekend and hopefully everything will then be finished." Great news if it gets sorted.
goodrobotusses Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Excellent news. Hope he sees out his career with us - been our best defender this season.
Hassony Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Excellent news. Hope he sees out his career with us - been our best defender this season. Our best defender for the past 18 years
Jim D Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Fantastic news I honestly thought this season would be he last, he struggled at the beginning but after having a run in the team due to Agger's absence he has been solid as ever. He won't be first choice next season due to his lack of pace but he would make ideal back up. Well done Sami.
Boca Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Great news this. Sami's probably been our most consistant defender this season and fully deserves a new deal.
stressederic Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 We've had strikers who don't finish this well
R A Softlad Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 I'd be very happy to see him finnish with us - and maybe stay on in some capacity. Yes, very good.
Dan Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 (edited) Testimonial next year as well. Quality. Edited March 26, 2008 by DS77
Kuyt-fever Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 (edited) Sami is the only member of the current squad (Alonso aside) that I'd be willing to come down for a night game testimonal. The kind of man who embodies what Liverpool fc is about. Class , dedication and comitment. Fully deserving of the new contract and if Parry does not sort this out , his position simply becomes untenable. Edited March 27, 2008 by Kuyt-fever

Koogan Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 'Set to sign' says the offal. Oh dear, he might miss the derby now. He's so slow that it will take him days to sign the new contract...
