I believe El Tel has gone cold-ish but still a worthy favourite. Deschamps won't be at 5-2 for long. *Taps nose* - 'say nowt'

On November 26th you were telling us Venables would be appointed within two weeks. Now Deschamps. Who's next?

I'm happy as hell Venables has cooled his interest to be honest. Obviously serious money gone on Deschamps today. I heard this morning and he was at 4's. The only thing is PP's are great at circulating 'rumours'. Venables was obviously nailed on, Deschamps I'm not so sure about but the info I get from this guy is generally solid. You can be sure they meeting him at the very least.

i hear Lawrie Sanchez is top of the wanted list now. that would be an interesting one

BBC:

Former Fulham and Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez is to be interviewed for the vacant Republic of Ireland job.

Sanchez, sacked by Fulham in December, is expected to meet with the three-man panel set up by the FAI to search for a successor to Steve Staunton.

Ray Houghton, Don Givens and Don Howe are expected to meet Sanchez although he is not regarded as a frontrunner.

It is believed the FAI hopes to name a manager before the end of January as the Republic face Brazil on 6 February.

Givens was in Bulgaria on Tuesday with FAI chief executive John Delaney and president David Blood to fiinalise the fixtures for the Republic's forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

Many names have been linked with the Republic job since Staunton's dismissal, the latest being former French captain and Juventus manager Didier Deschamps.

Irish FAI fall for Trap?

Tuesday 29 January, 2008

According to reports, Giovanni Trapattoni is in negotiations to become the new Republic of Ireland Coach, facing Italy in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

The former Azzurri boss is currently in charge of Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, but has been a contentious figure at the side and is considering a return to international management.

Claims on Sky Sports News this evening suggest Trapattoni is the new hot favourite to lead Ireland and is already in talks with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

Steve Staunton left the post after failing to qualify for Euro 2008 and at the moment team affairs are in the hands of Don Givens, Don Howe and Ray Houghton.

If Trap does accept the position, he could well make his debut on the Irish bench for the high-profile friendly against Brazil on February 6.

Trapattoni has spent a lifetime at the top of Italian and world football, as he was Coach at Milan, Fiorentina, Inter, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Stuttgart and Salzburg.

Trap was also an international manager for Italy, failing to progress past the second round in the 2002 World Cup and going out at the first hurdle in Euro 2004.

After England picked Italian Fabio Capello for their 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Ireland could follow a similar path.

It will be an interesting choice, as Italy are in Ireland’s World Cup qualifying group.

The reports about Trapattoni are wide of the mark for now, they've not even spoken to him but 1 or 2 of the panel would like to. Seemingly Don Howe has nobody other than El Tel for the job and the other 2 disagree. Any decision going forward now will be split. Venables still worthy favourite. There's a nucleus of players urging them to try Mick McCarthy again but the FAI aren't having it.

Everyone lump on Trapattoni as quick as you can.

When did Staunton actually get the sack, was it not back in October?

We are now two days away from February and a replacement has not yet been found, how laughable is that?
