Neil Warnock has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson phoned him to apologise after Manchester United lost at home to West Ham United with a weakened team on the last day of last season, a result which meant that Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League.

The former Blades manager, in his new book Made in Sheffield, recounts that his secretary asked him to return a call from Ferguson and that he thought about it for an hour before finally phoning his Old Trafford counterpart.

"He [Ferguson] said he was sorry about what had happened at Old Trafford. 'We battered them, Neil,' he said. 'We had 25 shots. And the stats would back me up on that. The team was good enough to win'," Warnock writes.

"'I know, Alex,' I said. 'It's just the psychological boost the other team gets when they see all those names not on your team sheet.' 'I can't tell you how sorry I am,' he said. He was quoted the next day saying everything was all right between us. But it's still difficult for me to digest what happened."

Warnock was bitterly disappointed when he saw the side Ferguson had picked against West Ham as his own team were preparing to play Wigan Athletic at Bramall Lane. A draw would have been enough for Sheffield to stay up but they lost 2-1 and had to rely on United beating West Ham, which they failed to do, losing 1-0 to Carlos Tevez's goal. United lost only one other league game at Old Trafford all season, in September against Arsenal.

"I felt really let down," Warnock writes. "I've so much time for Sir Alex but he had said he'd play his best side against West Ham. And this was nowhere near his best side.

"And then Carlos Tevez, football's equivalent of a murderer out on bail, had scored the goal that kept West Ham up and put us down. So much for the integrity of the Premier League. So much for fairness and justice in English football."

I really really f***ing hate this t*** of a man. Maybe if he could get his team of dimwitted f***wits to actually get a draw with Wigan then he would have stayed up by been a half decent manager, instead of the moany gobs***e of a prick of a man that he actually is. I sincerely hope he never gets a job in football again and f***s off back to what ever rock he crawled from under.

i fkin hate him too.. he's a c***.. that quote about Tevez is fkin scandalous - give the FA, Premier League, whoever s*** but you can't blame the player!

there was a point near the end of the season (possibly with about 10/12 games to go) where they looked relatively safe.. it's their own fault but not once has he come out and said anything like it might be down to the way his team played - it's all Rafa's fault or Ferguson's or Tevez's fault blah blah blah.. unfortunately, while i too would like to see him f***ed off, i doubt it's going to happen.. he's a fkin rent-a-quote and the media will still give him his soapbox..

Sean Bean exclusive: We all knew he was out of his depth in Premiership

By David Townsend 01/08/2007

Sean Bean labelled Neil Warnock "bitter" and "hypocritical" last night after being singled out for abuse by the former Sheffield United manager.

Warnock's forthcoming book attacks the Hollywood film star for directing foul language at his family, accuses him of making irrelevant contributions to Bramall Lane board meetings - and claims chairman Kevin McCabe has considered asking him to stand down.

Bean hit back: "A lot of Blades fans refer to him by his anagram 'Colin W*****' - and when he comes out with rubbish like this it's easy to see why." The Sharpe actor was incensed by newspaper allegations yesterday that he had launched a four-letter tirade in the direction of Warnock's five-year-old son William minutes after the Blades lost their Premiership survival battle in May. Bean said: "I've got three daughters of my own and there is no way I would ever dream of using language like that in front of a child, no matter how upset I was.

"Yes, I was looking for him after we were relegated - and I wasn't the only one. We were all devastated. But I didn't storm into Warnock's office and confront his wife as he claims in his book. I was outside in the corridor when I told her what I thought of him.

"What I didn't know was that his kid was behind the door and when someone pointed that out to me, I immediately apologised.

"The story Warnock tells is not the one I remember and I was there. But perhaps when you spend so much time rehearsing to get picked for the next series of Strictly Come Dancing it effects your memory."

The lifelong Blades fan, who is on the board of directors at Bramall Lane, also denies that he has ever been 'the worse for wear' while representing the club and says Warnock is hypocritical in complaining about his language.

He said: "Everyone has heard him effing and blinding on the touchline - and I find nothing wrong with that. Football is a passionate game. It excites us.

"But one minute Warnock is relating the story of how he told Sir Alex Ferguson to f*** off, the next he's having a go at me for bad language. It's hypocrisy. He did a TV documentary a couple of years ago and every other word was an expletive."

Bean was never Warnock's biggest fan - even before he joined the United board in 2002 - and is angered by what he sees as the manager's hijacking of the Blades' return to the top flight.

He said: "The whole season was about Warnock being in the Premiership, not United. It was all self-publicity. Yet it was clear to those of us on the board that he was out of his depth at that level and that's why there was no chance of his contract being extended - even if we had stayed up.

"Kevin McCabe was clear about that. Warnock had taken us as far as he could and we needed another manager to move the club forward.

"Yet Warnock kept going on and on in the press about his contract. Even on the final day of the season, when all our efforts should have been concentrated on the Wigan game, he was in the papers talking about his future - not the club's. That really annoyed me, and I can't say what effect it might have had on the players."

Believing that the manager's self-promotion in the press contributed to the Blades' final-day defeat by Wigan fuelled Bean's angry words to his wife Sharon, but he insists there is no truth in Warnock's claim that McCabe was going to ask him to "review his position on the board" over the incident.

Bean said: "I've been in contact with Kevin every other day during our Carlos Tevez campaign, and he has never so much as mentioned anything about my conduct.

"And while I've been trying to get United reinstated over the Tevez affair, it's become clear to me that Warnock's abrasive attitude has won us few friends among Premier League clubs.

"You can't go around saying things about Rafa Benitez and telling Fergie to f*** off and then expect support from these people. He was no help at all."

While quietly livid about many of the claims about him in Warnock's book, Bean laughed off the idea that his biggest contribution so far to board meetings was to suggest that the club should ditch mascot Captain Blade.

"It sounds as though he is really rather bitter," said Bean. "And in a way I feel sorry for him."

my only beef with sean bean's response is: if warnock was out of his depth in the premiership, and the chairman was never going to renew the manager's contract, then how come they've appointed bryan robson?

From the man who tried to get his players to feign injury to get a match they were 3 goals and 3 men down in abandoned.

Well that and that the original plan was for Warnock to 'step aside' and Stuart McCall was to take over!

from the man who had a hidden room between the dressing rooms at bramhall lane where he stationed a lackey to listen in on opponents' teamtalks. said lackey was once discovered and headbutted by burnley boss stan ternent.
