At least he's not a defensive midfielder :)

Reds agree fee for County starlet

Stockport have agreed to sell youngster Ryan Crowther to Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old winger, who has made just two appearances for the Hatters' first-team, impressed for the Reds during an international tournament in Milan and the Anfield club have now agreed a fee, with a routine medical set to take place on Monday.

Greg Tansey - another member of the Youth Alliance League Cup winning side of last season - also went to Italy with Liverpool but will stay with County.

Liverpool recently signed 14-year-old goalkeeper Ben Robinson from County's school of excellence.

i know you need strength in depth, and you never know which youngsters will make it, and you need to establish a good young team in order to help the starlets develop, and its investment in the future, and you can always sell off the ones who are not quite good enough, and arsenal do it this way...but...does anyone wonder:

1. if there can be such a thing as having too many talented youngsters

2. if we are close to that stage now

3. if rafa's conservatism means he will be reluctant to rely on the youngsters and its difficult to see when they will get their chances

I dont think we have that many talented youngsters. That's part of the problem! There have been very few coming through the ranks, hence the bulk buying in the hope 1 or 2 good ones come out of it. Most of these players are being signed for the reserve team and will probably never make it further here. And now we are seeing a few younger ones signed to go to the Academy, something that didn't happen before cos of Heighway. So we'll see how that works out.

I don't think Rafa is conservative at all. If the players are good enough, he'll play them whatever their ages. Reina, Agger, Sissoko, Mascherano, Gonzalez all came into the team at a pretty young age. He had no problem giving Insua games at the end of last season.

The fact is, we just haven't had many good young players in recent years, for him to give a chance to. He isn't going to play them for the hell of it.

fair dos...but apart from possibly insua i cant see any of the kids making a significant contribution to the first team next season at least

Let's stop signing them then.

what is your point?

we're signing a load of em and rafa seems reluctant to play em. he's no wenger

but he (and Herrera when he was here), signed many of these players for the reserve team, cos our reserve team was so s***.

We'll see how one or two of the more prominent youngsters we've signed like Insua get on in the next year or so.

Wanger has been at Arsenal for over 10 years, it's easy to sign youngsters when you already have your success behind you. Although I think a lot of Arsenal fans are fed up of him spending so much money on youngsters and not enough on the first team now. When Wenger first arrived he spent a lot of money on the first team, and to good effect. Now he's had 3 or 4 young players making it in the last couple years, it seems that he's a genius for some reason.

Not true, quite a few youngsters have play a periphery role in the first team squad. If none of them have progressed, it probably because they are not good enough rather than them not being given a chance. Rafa sees a lot more of them than we do, just because we don't see them in the first team does not mean Rafa hasn't seen them.

All youngsters are a risk, but if about one in twenty make it to the first team, it's probably worth it.

Wenger has got 2 or 3 exceptional young talents - Senderos, Fabregas and Clichy - over 7 or 8 years of this policy.

Kids got us to the Carling Cup final a couple of years ago.

Eboue, Denilson, Song, not sure if there are any more?

Yes appart from pongolle, le tallec, welsh, potter, guthrie, hamill, anderson, mellor, peltier, palleta, Insua in various cups, league games and champions league games. The fact many have moved on and not pulled up any trees so far suggests Rafa possibly had a point. Sure many will have decent careers in the championship but unfortunately they just have got that extra special talent to make it with us.

Was gonna say something the same - don't where the idea that Rafa is reluctant to play youth could possibly come from, he's already played loads of the young lads in games.
