Alex blow for PSV

By Jeffrey Glorie - Created on 11 Mar 2007

Liverpool's UEFA Champions League quarter-final opponents PSV Eindhoven have been dealt a huge blow with the news that Alex could miss the remainder of the season.

The influential defender, who scored the goal that saw off Arsenal in the competition's last-16, injured his hamstring in PSV's draw with Excelsior on Sunday.

A disappointing stalemate was compounded by the sight of Alex in obvious pain, with the player to undergo a scan on Monday.

PSV boss Ronald Koeman admits the early diagnosis does not look positive, willing to concede that it could be the end of the season for a player who has done as much as any in the club's promising campaign thus far.

"At the moment that he wanted to kick the ball, he felt something tear," said Koeman.

"We have to wait, but we think that there is a crack.

"If that's the case, then we may be happy if he plays another game this season."

If true that really is a massive blow for them.

PSV have got some good players, the two up front are quick and lively, whilst I like the South American guy who plays at the back; but Alex is their one truly top class player, and is the rock on which the team is based.

Losing him would put a huge dent in their chances of getting past us.

Kone has knee ligament damage and is a major doubt as well apparently.

Bloody hell, that's another of their major players. Don't think he'll ever be the best footballer in the world but he's very quick, direct and works hard.

Villa are supposed to be trying to sign him for nearly £8m in the summer, I think he'd do OK here.

I'm so nervous for this game. Koeman outsmarted us last season with Benfica. We haven't changed our team much since then except added Bellamy and Kuyt..so we should play them upfront no matter what.

Our defence is the same though.

We really got it wrong in Benfica - that killed us - and I dont think we will make the same mistake again. Last time we had Fowler and Nando upfront with Stevie on the bench. In that game we sat back and offered nothing upfront due to the lack of pace and then little support from midfield.

I think the confidence from beating Barca away along with a more dynamic front line should see us in better stead - now whether we make the same defensive lapse is another thing ................

Except it isn't. We also have Agger and Arbeloa. Didn't do too well against us earlier in the season, did they?

I keep trying to find mitigating circumstances to their lack of threat on our goal and here are my conclusions;

i) the 1st game they did not want to lose and realised that they would be better with a point and then take their chances with Bordeaux and Galatasaray

ii) the 2nd game they had qualified for the next stage so therein is a possible reason

also,

we only managed to break their defence in the last half hour of the second game. Also, they have a very good home record in the CL

This is me at my most pessemistic.

Can someone bring in the good points.............

He really didn't. We battered them at Anfield and they scored one belter from miles out and one right at the end on a counter attack. We just happened to play them right at the time when we couldn't score a fecking goal to save our lives. Much like now, in fact.
