Turns out Leighton Baines (who I really rate, as I think do quite a few people on here) lives round the corner from us. I saw him the other day and guess what, he has his little lad wearing a Liverpool shirt so it seems he's a proper red (Not sure if this is common knowledge but I didn't know).

I think he'd be a brilliant summer signing, and probably wouldn't cost megabucks. Very solid defensively, scores long distance whoppers like Riise but I think he's far better on the ball. Plus the fact that he's a local lad and supports the club, I really think he'd be a Rafa-type signing.

I've always been a staunch supporter of Riise but I can't argue his form this season has been very disappointing. Yet every time I've seen Baines play this season he's impressed me; he looks to have pretty much everything you look for in a full-back. Warnock's committed defending and tackling, Riise's shot and better on the ball than either of them.

Get in there Rafa...

but hes got the type of hair that just falls out. I think it would be bad for morale having a bald left back.

I am not one generally to go on about who we should sign or who our targets might be but I agree with the original poster on this one. I think he is up to standard and will get better. Chances are Wigan may go down this year and he might not want a year in the Championship so he might look elsewhere.

I have no doubt whatsoever that Rafa will strengthen at left back. The only thing that will stop this happening is if Insua makes a huge impression over the next 6 months.

He's one of those players who could end up being good enough for a top team but it's hard to tell. He's still a bit dodgy positionally, but he's young and could improve as he gets older.

I thought he was partly to blame for the first arsenal goal (even though he was offside) as he totaly lost the player behind him

Surely thats a contradiction in itself.

I'm sure if we slip Dowd a few quid their relegation could be moved from "may" to "will"

can anyone think of a better left back, who we could realistically get, who wants to come to us?

he's right in the middle of that happy venn diagram and I hope we buy him

agree entirely with this.

especially the use of a venn diagram.

he's got a great name though.

and if his hair did fall out, with a name like that i'd like to suggest, and i know i'm going out on a limb here - right on the cutting edge of fashion infact - but dare i suggest a comb over ?

i think it would be majestic, at once post modern yet also connecting us to footballs' working class roots. a modern day johny metgod.

He kind of reminds me of Finnan. A solid performer that doesn't court the limelight yet does a good job week in week out. My only concern would be a step up to a big club. Many times players stand out for a smaller team yet fail to make the impact at the next level. He's goy no pressure on him really at Wigan(other than their league place). I would think for him to leave Wigan he and Jewell would make sure it is Liverpool.

Terrific stuff and we owe it to our tradition to get him in.

Very Ralph Coates-esque

Baines seems a decent player but I'm not sure he has quite the quality we are looking for. I'd rather persevere with Riise (who is a decent player despite his poor form) and Aurelio (who has looked OK of late when he has played, if a little injury prone).

Judging by the start Insua made for the reserves the other night, he may well go on to be our top left back.

Yeah, it's almost like Norman Bates. You don't forget it.

Ideally we'd get Chivu in, he's far and away the best LB in the world IMO, he prefers to play CB though. I think he's made disparaging remarks about English football in the past too.

Signing Baines would be a risk, like signing Pennant was a risk last summer. I'm not sure we can afford to take risks anymore, there are certain positions we need to bring in top class players.

Completely agree with everything there.

Chivu, class player. He'd fit the bill perfectly.
