Walrus Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Sami Hyypiä knows when it?s time to leave Recently Sami Hyypiä reached the all time top 25 in appearances made for Liverpool. ?It took me by surprise when I heard about it. It does feel like a significant thing to me. There?s only been eleven players who have made more than 500 appearances for the club? says Hyypiä while having dinner in a restaurant in Liverpool city centre. It?s Saturday night and it?s only a few hours since Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-0 in a match where manager Rafael Benitez decided to keep Hyypiä on the bench. Hyypiä is six games off 400 appearances for Liverpool. If he can?t reach that milestone this spring Sami must consider his options. At the moment, however, there is no need to worry. ?Throughout the autumn people were asking me how do I feel not to be playing regularly, ?Should I move elsewhere to be able to play more??? ?I said then that I?ll have to wait and see until the end of the season in May. If I then feel I haven?t had enough matches, Í?ll have to do something about it. I?ll go into Benitez?s office and tell him that I feel I have played too few games this season. What can we do about it?? Hyypiä will not walk into the manager?s office demanding more games, but simply to find out about his options: is a loan move or a permanent transfer more suitable? ?In May I will face the situation where, if I feel I haven?t played enough, it might be better for me to move away from Liverpool. Sami?s contract runs out in the summer of 2008. ?If I could get one more year after that I would complete a full decade here. That fact is playing on my mind a little bit, but obviously these things are not down to me only? he says. If his role diminishes further Hyypiä must start looking around. ?It?s hugely important for me also because Finland?s Euro 2008 qualification campaign is in full flow and I want to be fully fit to play a part in that. If I don?t play at all at club level it will obviously have an effect on my performances in the qualifiers as well.? Original article here I think we'd do well to persuade him to stay for next season, but I feel he like Didi last summer will be allowed to leave.
Berger Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Thank you for his 7 years of good services. But his time is up. Not many Liverpool defenders can be as slow as he.
badtodabone Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 be great if he could stay another year, but he has to do whats best for him.hes been a great player for us
Guest Kaizer Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Thank you for his 7 years of good services. But his time is up. Not many Liverpool defenders can be as slow as he. Not many Liverpool defenders can read the game as good either and totally dominate his own box like Sami can.Personally I think most of the criticism Sami has been getting this season has been unjust, when we struggled at the back is was more down to Carra struggling than Sami struggling. People have really short memories, what about the MOTM performance he delivered only two matches ago?
Andy @ Allerton Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I'm happy for him to stay another couple of seasons He's a great character and if used sparingly can certainly do a good job for us - plus he's a very good influence to defenders coming through I'd actually like to see him as a coach and maybe a scout for the club
Guest Jodus Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Like Didi in the last two seasons - if he'll stay, keep his as valuabe cover, but I think he'll look to leave, as Agger has that spot for the remainder of the season, methinks.
Nerik Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I think he can do for us what Adams did for Arsenal and that is play in certain games and offer cover. I would love to see him stay on.
Bootle Buck Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Sami still has a lot to offer Liverpool and hopefully will be around for a few years. Just as recent as the Bolton game at home he showed his quality.
HK Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 As a cover defender, he is near peerless. But we all know that he is too good for that. Particularly at this stage of his career.
Igors Uncle Dave Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Thank you for his 7 years of good services. But his time is up. Not many Liverpool defenders can be as slow as he. And not one centre half I know of can touch him in the air!!!! Sami has a great deal to offer the club.
McBain Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I wouldn't ever want to see him run out for another Prem team Re his pace. He was never fast even 7 years ago. and I would say his form last season was as good as it's ever been. So i'm not against keeping him at all But if wants to be in the team most weeks then I dunno if he's ever gonna get that again here
Paul Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Been a great servant to the club and can still be useful as backup. Before he came here I used to shudder whenever the opposition crossed a high ball in to our area.
genghis Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 GH's best buy, by a comedy country mile (2nd best: Didi). The 2x SH's helped restore our ability to grind out games, which was totally lost for most of the 90s.
anny road Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 one of liverpools greatest ever players IMO. here here
Benitez Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 the fact he cost the grand sum of £2.6 mill, and has since helped the club win the European Cup, UEFA Cup, 2 FA Cups, 2 league cups, 2 Super Cups, helped us qualify for Europe however many seasons running , played so many games, been an outstanding professional, it will always make me smile!
Guest Scot Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 one of liverpools greatest ever players IMO. Agree with that.
Andy-oh-six Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 An absolute legend is our Sami. Hopefully he'll stay on and play the kind of role he has this season but if he really wants to leave to play more regularly he'll be allowed to I'm sure.
growler Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 One of the things that Rafa has, that we haven't had before is that ruthless streak. Look at the scum and the arsenal. They cull their players when they get a replcement. anyone remember when united got rid of mcclair hughes, kanchelskis and ince all on one go? Yeah some players will stay, but only if they are hapy to be bit part players. I would like Hyppia know that he will get 15-20 games next season, possibly more depending on cup runs etc. Its up to him then. can't believe he has been here 10 years though!
meepins Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Sami moving on is crazy talk. Who steps in if Carragher or Agger is injured?

fyds Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 And not one centre half I know of can touch him in the air!!!! Sami has a great deal to offer the club.Absolutely right - agree with maldini...would love him to end his career with us and then maybe join the staff.
Whitey Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 He's been immense and an absolute bargain. "We all dream of a team of Hyypia's"
