Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on permanently in September 2008. The young Hungarian made it into our bench 51 times but failed to feature for the first team before joining Red Bull Salzburg in June 2013. 1994 – Another young custodian, Tyrell Belford, was born in Nuneaton. He arrived from Coventry City in the summer of 2009, aged just fifteen. He signed on professionally in July 2011 but moved to Swindon Town on a free transfer two years later after falling behind Gulácsi and Danny Ward in the pecking order. 2004 – Forward Oakley Cannonier was born in Leeds. He joined the reds at Under-12’s level, signing pro terms in July 2021 and then a new deal in August 2022. His most significant impact to date remains as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. The first sighting of Saint Michael 1997 - Michael Owen netted on his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 144 days. He had come on as a substitute for Patrik Berger less than twenty minutes previously in our 2-1 defeat by Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, nabbing our consolation after a Jason Euell goal and one of Dean Holdsworth’s four strikes past the reds. 2006 - He became a father for the second time, to his first son, named James Michael. Missing out on the League 1991 - Our 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest handed the League title to Arsenal, their second in three seasons. Nigel Clough scored the opener with Jan Mølby netting our equaliser from the spot, while David Burrows was playing his hundredth game for the reds. Ian Woan bagged the winner. This game was postponed from the previous December. 1998 - We hosted the Gunners at Anfield after they had already clinched the League title, their first since that 1991 triumph. We thumped them 4-0, with Paul Ince bagging a brace, and Michael Owen and Øyvind Leonhardsen also on the scoresheet. Owen also had a penalty saved by Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger after Matthew Upson had fouled Steve McManaman. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah reached a century of Anfield goals, the only strike of Brentford’s League visit, as he netted for a club record ninth consecutive home game. Meanwhile, Alisson Becker kept his hundredth clean sheet for the club. 1995 – Keeper David James reached a century of reds games in our 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Dwight Yorke netting two of his eight strikes against us. Red endings 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Manchester United in front of just 12,073 spectators. Johnny Hanlon bagged a brace as we ended the season in eleventh. This game saw the final official appearances of right-half Matt Busby, right-back Tommy Cooper, left-half Jimmy McInnes, keeper Arthur Riley, defender Fred Rogers and winger Harman van den Berg. 1996 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley played his final reserves game. Reaching a super cup final 1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course. Big wins We have twice won top-flight fixtures 4-1 on this day in history. 1922 - We beat West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, with a Harry Beadles brace, his final reds strikes, and goals from Dick Forshaw and Jock McNab. Stan Davies struck one of his four goals past us. 1933 - Sheffield Wednesday lost at Anfield, centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net with Gordon Hodgson and Dave Wright both striking twice, as we finished the season in thirteenth position. Also recently 2018 – We lost at Chelsea as Olivier Giroud headed in the only goal, one of his seven past us to date, as we stuttered towards a top-four finish in the League. Births and death 1971 - Former reserve keeper Jørgen Nielsen was born in Nykøbing Falster. The Dane never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997. 1969 - Another former reserve, midfielder Jim Magilton, was born in Belfast. He later had a successful career with Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town before moving into management. 1915 - Tom Watson died. He had been appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death. Nando the champion 2001 – Fernando Torres converted a penalty to hand Spain Under-16’s the European Championships, as they beat France 1-0 in the Final in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with fellow future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both on the losing side. Firsts for Scotland 1959 - Motherwell’s Ian St. John won his first full international cap as Scotland beat West Germany 3-2 at Hampden Park. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1966 – Future red Kenny Dalglish made his first international appearance, bagging a brace as the Under-15’s won 4-3 in Northern Ireland. New ground approved 2008 – The revised design for the club’s new stadium in Stanley Park was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. However, work never fully got underway and these plans have now been scrapped. Management ins and outs 1999 - Jan Mølby was appointed Manager of Kidderminster Harriers. He led them to the Conference title in his first season, and then mid-table Third Division safety in the next two years. 2004 - Steve McMahon resigned as Blackpool boss, with fellow ex-red Mark Seagraves dismissed as Assistant Manager on the same day. McMahon had guided the Seasiders to 102 wins in his 350 games in charge, leading them back out of the basement in his first full season, and mid-table security in his following three seasons. Reds on target 2003 – Future red Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Andria. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann scored as Germany Under-17’s beat Turkey 3-1 in a European Championships Finals match in Erfurt, while future red Jonjo Shelvey featured as England drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Gera. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a European Championships Finals game in Serbia, with future red Emre Can also playing. Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured as England lost 2-0 to Denmark in the same competition that day. 2017 – Future red Ozan Kabak netted for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Croatia 4-1 in a European Championships finals group game in Rijeka. Signing on and off 2022 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Conor Thomas was released by Cheltenham Town after twenty goals in 146 games since arriving in May 2018. 2017 – Scottish centre-back George Johnston signed professional terms with the reds. He moved on to Feyenoord in August 2019 after featuring in one pre-season friendly. 2011 – Midfielder Jay Spearing signed a new contract. He played 55 senior reds games without notching, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season-long loan there. 1992 - Future reds winger Mark Kennedy signed as a professional for Millwall. He went on to net twelve times in 54 games for the Lions, before moving to Anfield three years later. 1903 – Scottish inside-right George Livingstone was sold to Manchester City. He had signed from Celtic in May 1902 and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He went on to help City to claim the FA Cup in 1904. For John 1975 - We played in a testimonial match for Plymouth Argyle legend John Hore, with Brian Hall, Emlyn Hughes and Terry McDermott netting as we won 4-3 at Home Park, and Ray Clemence converting a penalty! Other games on this day 1985 – We won 2-0 at Coventry City, with Paul Walsh scoring twice past former reds reserve keeper Steve Ogrizovic. 1980 – Middlesbrough beat the reds 1-0 at Ayresome Park in our season closer. David Shearer struck the first of his four goals against us at the death. 1967 – We shared a goalless draw at Anfield with Tottenham Hotspur. Also in international action 1944 – Ray Lambert and future red Cyril Sidlow played for Wales as they lost 2-0 to England in a Wartime International at Ninian Park. 1964 – Gordon Milne featured in England’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Uruguay at Wembley. 1976 – Joey Jones played for Wales as they lost 3-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships in Glasgow. 2001 – Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both featured for Senegal as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Egypt. 2016 - Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper managed England Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Sweden in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France as they drew 0-0 with Denmark in the same competition. 2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever played for the Dutch Under-17’s as they beat England 5-2 in a European Championships Finals group game in Dublin, with Steve Cooper in charge of England.

Titi’s tears 1999 - Titi Camara scored the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United, and then broke down in tears as he celebrated. He later revealed that his father had died earlier that day, “That goal was for my dad. It contributed to an extremely emotional day in my life. I did not want to let my team-mates down, which is why I insisted on playing. With Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler both injured, they needed me.” On the same day, Michael Foley played for the Irish Under-16’s as they beat Switzerland 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin. Happy birthday Phil 1942 - Phil Chisnall was born in Manchester. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. 1899 – William Cunningham was born in Radcliffe in Lancashire. He signed from Blyth Spartans for £50 in May 1920, but played just three times before joining Barrow in January 1924. Debutants galore 1962 - Goalkeeper Tommy ‘The Flying Pig’ Lawrence and inside-left Gordon Wallace both made their reds debuts in our 1-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion, with Jimmy Melia having a penalty saved, while left-half Tommy Leishman played his 118th and last reds game. 1951 - We were also beaten by the Baggies in a First Division match when Jimmy Payne added to a Billy Liddell penalty as we lost 5-2 at Anfield. Frank Griffin bagged the first two of his six goals past us, with Ronnie Allen scoring the first of his five strikes against the reds, with Reg Ryan and George Lee also on the scoresheet. Bill Jones was playing his 200th reds game. 2021 – Left-back Owen Beck debuted in our 2-0 League Cup Fourth Round win at Preston North End, with forward Harvey Blair playing his only senior game. Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi both scored after the break. 1998 - Sean Dundee made his first-class reds bow as a substitute in our 3-1 League Cup Third Round win at home to Fulham, with Robbie Fowler netting a penalty and Paul Ince on the scoresheet, to add to a Simon Morgan own goal. Paul Peschisolido scored for the Cottagers. 1894 - Centre-forward Hugh Henderson made his red bow as we were thumped 5-0 by Aston Villa on our first visit to their old Perry Barr ground. Jack Reynolds bagged a brace, including one from the spot, with Jimmy Cowan netting the first of his four goals past us and Denny Hodgetts and Billy Dorrell also scoring as left-half Jim McBride played his 56th and last reds game. 1934 - Defender Fred Rogers debuted in our 2-2 top-flight draw at Preston North End, with Gordon Hodgson and Vic Wright netting. Bud Maxwell bagged the first of his seven strikes past us, with George Bargh also on target. 1900 - We also faced the Lilywhites, beating them 3-2 at Anfield thanks to Andy McGuigan’s first reds strike and goals from Jack Cox and Sam Raybould. Alex Raisbeck put through his own net, with Jackie Pierce also scoring for the visitors. Trebles galore 1993 - Ian Rush netted a hat-trick as we beat Ipswich Town 3-2 in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, his last ever home treble. 1928 - Forward Bill Salisbury made his reds bow as Gordon Hodgson scored a thirteen-minute first-half hat-trick as we drew 4-4 at Arsenal in a First Division meeting, with Dick Edmed netting the other. Hodgson’s first goal was actually his fiftieth for the club, with his third being his fiftieth in the League. Centre-half David Davidson put through his own net, with Len Thompson nabbing a brace and Jimmy Brain bagging one of his eight goals against the reds. 1906 - Bobby Robinson bagged a treble as we beat Manchester City by the odd goal in nine at Anfield. Sam Raybould and Willie McPherson scored our others. Irvine Thornley netted twice for the visitors, with Billy Jones and George Stewart also on target. We have faced City twice more on this day in history. 1945 – We went down 5-0 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. 1979 - Kenny Dalglish struck twice as we won a top-flight fixture 4-0 at Maine Road, with David Johnson and Ray Kennedy also on the scoresheet. Ten thousand up 2020 – Diogo Jota scored the club’s 10,000th goal with Mohamed Salah converting a stoppage-time penalty as we beat Midtjylland 2-0 in a UEFA Champions League group game behind closed doors at Anfield. Also recently 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri struck his first goal for the club as we beat Cardiff City 4-1 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah netting in his third consecutive game. Sadio Mané added the other two goals as we went top of the table after ten League fixtures. 2019 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in L4 despite Harry Kane putting the visitors in front inside a minute, with one of his nine strikes past us. Jordan Henderson equalised after the break with Mohamed Salah bagging the winner from the spot. This result left is with a six-point lead at the top of the table after ten games. Clem’s century 1971 – Ray Clemence played his hundredth reds game as we lost 2-1 at West Ham United in a League Cup Fourth Round tie. Bobby Graham bagged our goal, with Geoff Hurst netting one of his nine strikes against the reds and Pop Robson scoring the first of his five goals past us. Half a century for Bob 1976 - Bob Paisley secured his fiftieth League victory as reds boss as a John Toshack goal was enough to defeat Leicester City at Filbert Street. This was Bob’s 95th League game as Manager, five games more than it took Bill Shankly to achieve the same feat, although many of his wins came in the Second Division, and two games more than it took Rafael Benítez. Phil Neal reached a century of reds appearances this day. In comes Cyril 1925 – Outside-right Cyril Oxley signed from Chesterfield for £2,000. He bagged six goals in 34 games before moving to Southend United in September 1928. Keepers on the move 2006 - Chris Kirkland was officially sold to Wigan Athletic for a reported £3.5m, having been on loan at the JJB Stadium since July 2006. 2015 - Brad Jones was released by Bradford City by mutual consent, subsequently moving into Dutch football. Bye bye twice 2001 - Jamie Redknapp scored on his last League start as we won 2-0 at Charlton Athletic, with Michael Owen also on target. Stephen Wright was sent off late on for a second bookable offence. On the same day, Chris McGrath featured for the Irish Under-16’s in their goalless European Championships qualifying draw with Latvia. First game for an old country 1993 - Vladimír Šmicer won his first full international cap for the Republic of Czechs & Slovaks in their 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Cyprus in Kosice. He was then still an SK Slavia Praha player, and would not win any more caps until the Czech Republic side formed after the country’s split earlier that year. Team of the year 2008 – Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both been named in the Fifpro World Footballer of the Year team, voted for by footballers around the world. Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo won the overall award for Fifpro World Footballer of the Year. Reaching a million 2009 – The club’s official Facebook page reached the landmark of one million fans, the first British football club to do so. On the same day, future reds Alisson Becker and Philippe Coutinho both played for Brazil Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Mexico in a World Championship Finals group game in Nigeria. International milestones 1976 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén won his first cap for Sweden Under-18’s as they beat East Germany 3-2 in a European Championships qualifier in Halmstad. 1993 - Ronnie Rosenthal netted in Israel’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with Austria in Tel-Aviv. This was his last goal for his country while still a reds player. 2006 – Future red Krisztián Németh nabbed a brace as Hungary Under-19’s won a European Championships qualifier 3-1 in Cyprus. 2015 – Bobby Adekanye won his third and last cap for the Dutch Under-17’s in their 4-1 European Championships qualifying defeat by Switzerland in Wales, with Kamil Grabara also in action at this level that day. Other reds games 1996 – We beat Derby County 2-1 at Anfield with Robbie Fowler bagging a brace. 1990 – Ian Rush and Steve Nicol struck as Chelsea lost 2-0 in L4. 1973 – Kevin Keegan netted the only goal of Sheffield United’s visit. 1956 – Jimmy Melia bagged our consolation as we lost a Second Division encounter 4-1 at Barnsley. Johnny McCann netted the first two of his four goals against the reds, with Arthur Kaye scoring from the spot and Sid Storey also on the scoresheet. 1923 – Jimmy Walsh was on target as we won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. On the move 2008 – Ex-reds midfielder John Welsh joined Carlisle United on loan from Hull City. He played six games for the Blues. 2014 – Former reds Managing Director Christian Purslow was appointed as Head of Global Commercial Activities of Chelsea. On the same day, Herbie Kane played for England Under-17’s as theu beat North Macedonia 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Greece. Also in international action 2016 - Elijah Dixon-Bonner captained an England Under-16’s side that also included Curtis Jones as they lost a friendly 1-0 in France. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Romania. 2017 – Future reds Ryan Gravenberch and Ki-Jana However both played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 3-0 friendly win over Poland. 2021 – Future red Ben Doak featured as Scotland Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Northern Ireland.

Liddell signs on 1939 - Billy Liddell signed as a professional at Anfield. He went on to strike 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1957 – Keeper Tommy ‘The Flying Pig’ Lawrence signed for the reds as an amateur, turning professional in October 1957. He played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. Clinching the title 1922 - We clinched our third League championship on this Easter Monday by beating title rivals Burnley 2-1 thanks to goals from Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw, as Tottenham Hotspur, the other side in the hunt lost that day. Left-half Tom Bromilow played his hundredth League game that day as we regained the title for the first time in sixteen years, while inside-forward Harry Lewis played his seventieth and final game for the club. 1965 - We also entertained the Clarets, with Tommy Smith on target in a 1-1 draw. Andy Lochhead struck one of his four goals against the reds. Hat-tricks galore 1993 - Mark Walters scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, in our 4-0 defeat of Coventry City, our first treble in the Premier League. David Burrows nabbed the other goal, his third and final one for the club. 1973 - We also faced the Sky Blues, this time at Highfield Road. Phil Boersma netted both goals in our 2-1 victory as Kevin Keegan reached a century of reds outings. 1907 - Alf Common bagged a treble for Middlesbrough in their 4-2 win at Anfield, the first of his four goals past us, with Birkenhead-born Robert Blanthorne netting in his second and final senior reds appearance. Arthur Goddard also scored for the reds, with Andrew Aitken also on target for the visitors. This was a record eighth home League defeat of the season. Heading towards Madrid 2019 – We thumped Porto 4-1 in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final, having already won the first fixture 2-0. Sadio Mané opened the scoring before the break, with Mohamed Salah adding a second before Éder Militão pulled a goal back for the home side. Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk both headed in late on to complete the scoring. Most recently 2023 – We trounced relegation-bound Leeds United 6-1 at Elland Road. Cody Gakpo struck first before Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota each netting twice. Darwin Núñez added a late sixth, with Colombian winger Luis Sinisterra on target for the home side. Reds birthdays 1894 – Scottish right-half Jock McNab was born in Cleland, Lanarkshire. He signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919 and helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games before moving to Queens Park Rangers in June 1928. 1909 - Full-back Ben Dabbs was born in Oakengates, Shropshire. He failed to score in 56 first-team appearances for the reds after arriving from his hometown club in June 1932, moving to Watford in June 1938. 1910 - Defender Fred ‘The Bullet’ Rogers was born in Frodsham, Cheshire. He played 75 reds games without finding the net after signing from Helsby Athletic in 1933. 1912 – Keeper Stanley Kane was born in Workington. He only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. He moved on to Southend United in April 1936. 1990 – Former reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was born in Pristina, Kosova, although he grew up in Sweden. He joined the reds in December 2006, moving on to Leicester City in June 2009 having failed to break through to the first team. Soto’s farewell 2011 - We drew 1-1 at Arsenal in a game with plenty of late drama. We suffered injuries to Fábio Aurélio, Andy Carroll and Jamie Carragher, with young full-back pairing Jon Flanagan and Jack Robinson impressing. The home side took the lead in the eighth minute of stoppage time through Robin van Persie from the spot, one of his seven goals past us, but Emmanuel Eboué then shoved Lucas in the back, with Dirk Kuyt converting the late, late penalty to equalise. This was Sotirios Kyrgiakos’s 49th and final reds game. Saved! 2004 - Steven Gerrard had a penalty saved as we were held to a goalless draw by Fulham at Anfield, with Fulham’s Zesh Rehman becoming the first British-born Asian player to appear in the Premiership. El-Hadji Diouf made his eightieth and final reds appearance as a substitute, while Jamie Carragher played his 300th game for us. 1954 – Billy Liddell had a spot-kick saved by Cardiff City full-back Alfred Sherwood who had to go between the sticks when keeper Ron Howells broke his thumb. We lost 1-0 in this top-flight fixture at Anfield. Sami the skipper 2002 - In the light of Jamie Redknapp’s departure for Tottenham Hotspur the day before, Sami Hyypiä was named club captain. Double benefits at Anfield 1909 - Our top-flight meeting with Bury was played as a benefit game for winger Jack Cox and skipper Alex Raisbeck. Robert Orr netted a first-half brace as we drew 2-2, while left-back Billy Dunlop played his 363rd and final reds game. Billy Hibbert struck one of his thirteen goals against the reds, with Bob Currie also on target. 1911 - Jack Parkinson scored his hundredth League goal for the club as we drew 1-1 with Woolwich Arsenal, in a benefit game for keeper Sam Hardy. Inside-left Ronald Orr reached a century of League outings for the reds that day. Overall record Of our 24 fixtures on this day over the years, an amazing nineteen have been at Anfield, with only three away games. Despite this historical home bias, we have only won around a third of our games on this day, with ten draws and five defeats. 1985 - The other game was an FA Cup Semi-final replay at Maine Road which we lost 2-1 to Manchester United, with our goal scored by United’s Paul McGrath before the break. However, Bryan Robson struck one of his seven goals past us after the break with Mark Hughes also grabbing the first of his nine in the second half. Other beginnings and ends 2016 – Keeper Danny Ward made his senior reds bow as we won 2-1 at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium, as Dean Court was then known. Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge both struck at the end of the first half, with the latter also striking the woodwork twice. Josh King bagged a stoppage time consolation for the home side. 1948 – Inside-left Willie Fagan netted in his hundredth League appearance for the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester City at Anfield, with centre-forward Les Shannon making his reds bow and full-back Jim Harley playing his 131st and last reds game. 1915 - Wilf Bartrop played his third and final reds game, with Billy Banks netting his sixth and last reds goal as we beat Bradford Park Avenue 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield, with Fred Pagnam also on the scoresheet.
