If you're dealing with a club that doesn't want to sell, then overpaying (which we clearly did with Keane) is one of the few weapons in your locker. Not sure what gives you the impression that we could "easily" have paid less for him. How exactly?

The extension was simply to allow more time for a deal to be concluded if the weather played a part in not meeting the deadline. e.g. if a player can't perform a medical because of the snow, then as long as both clubs show the FA that the deal was agreed by 5pm and that it was only this that prevented them from completing the paperwork them they can have an extension to complete everything later. It doesn't mean you can continue to wheel and deal after 5pm trying to find someone else to get in on loan. So if someone else is to join us today, we'll know about it before 5pm.

The £20M or so we paid for him is immaterial. Whilst losing a large chunk of cash on Keane isn't exactly desirable you have to look at the situation as it is now. We have a player that isn't getting in the squad at the moment on a regular basis (and that's a squad of 18). If we're aren't going to play him regularly then you have to come to the conclusion that getting as much money as we can for him now is the best solution since 5 months of sitting on the bench isn't going to do wonders for his marketability come summer. Ideally we'd also get someone in on loan for this period and find a permanent replacement in the summer.

The tackles weren't the very same. One was a studs up challenge that got the ball and then made contact with a player. The other wasn't studs up and missed everything. Other than that they were identical.

Hmmm. I seem to remember talk of us being after Vidic and/or Agger. Vidic then decided to join the Mancs at which point we moved (quickly for once) for Agger the following week. I could be delusional though. It wouldn't be the first time.

Wasn't Agger our fall-back option instead of Vidic?
