  6. I can't emphasise how welcome that cold beer was. You can imagine what it's like with a 10 year old in tow and trying to get 2 tickets for a game.. You start out thinking, it's ok.. we'll get tickets. Then buying her an ice cream as people look at you like you're a madman. Then eureka! the tickets come .. and at face value! . Explaining to the (Irish) lads that it's Olivia's first game... one of them gave her a hug. me a beer and off we go When we get into the ground, there they are, the guys who sold us the tickets. They were high fiviing Liv doing silly dances. It was a great time....brilliant! Yes. you're right it'll live in her mind... but mine. too!
  7. I took my daughter last night. She's been wanting to go to a game for a while and we'd planned to go up for the Spurs game, but she has to been down (in London) here for an awards ceremony on Sunday. We didn't have any tickets so we went on spec. I was giving it the old 'Any spares' for about 30 minutes when we came across a group of Irish fellas by the river .. who sold me two tickets at face value and a cold beer for nothing. Olivia (my daughter) was so excited. She got a scarf, a programme and a hot dog. Obviously, the goals and the atmosphere were brilliant, but for me it was extra special to be there with her standing on the seat holding my shoulders and cheering the goals and jumping up and down when we scored. A rite of passage for her but a feeling akin to Istanbul for me. She had her scarf on and her programme in her hand this morning going to school.

  11. Arsenal were very respectful in the run in of 1989 - they didn't seek to gain any competitive advantage over the last few matches of the season (by playing their games as scheduled- and thereby amassing a good lead in the table) and their players brough flowers on to the pitch with them and gave them to fans around the ground before the start of the game in the showdown game at Anfield I think, on the whole, Arsenal and their fans are amongst the best in the league- it's just that their manger is a t**!

  21. As an aside. My father in law (now deceased) turned down a knighthood. He was a distinguished chief medical officer and was on the board of Guys Hospital. His knighthood was for services to the NHS, but he declined stating that he was merely doing his job., His wife was distraught, but he was a staunch socialist and fundamentally disagreed with the honours system. My wife, his daughter, still has a copy of his letter to The Queen's representative turning down the offer.
  22. Hmmm.. well done on getting rid of Hicks and Gillette... a plague on you for appointing Hodgson. If Hodgson hasn't gone by the time the title is officially bestowed on him, I reckon Lizzie should lop off Broughton's head. Always said The Queen was a red! She saw so much of us at Anfield Road South, she's bound to be
