Steven Gerrard

Rodgers has been in the dugout for only 3 1/2 months. During this time he's made alterations to the team and system. Now for the elephant in the room

Personally i'd have Gerrard in attack behind Suarez and Sterling ( although i'd like to give the latter a rest over Christmas ). From here he can play through balls, switch to either wing, make runs into the area from deep as the two tricky forwards pull defenders wide, drop a little deeper if need be but not back to our defensive third. Suarez and Sterling can both play through the middle and wide. It would be the most fluid, creative and potent attack we have

And yet it hasn't happened.

Go back to two proper fullbacks, play a solid midfield - facilitating the role of the attacking fullbacks - with players able to press and play at a high tempo, and give Gerrard freedom to play.

Couple of easy games coming up - if he doesn't improve then is it the bench ?

I was advocating him serving some bench time before the game, but I think people are getting a bit carried away here.

He was poor in the first half though he improved in the latter stages of it, and he was the only midfielder worth his salt in the second. Played well.

Allen and Henderson's total lack of incisiveness, and shelvey too on the day, were greater concerns for me today than Gerrard.

Maybe (not really thought this through so might be nonsense) he doesn't feel he has the authority to be properly directing Gerrards game? Could potentially be a problem with young managers, it must be difficult to come in and say to someone who's been world class for a decade, 'No, do this...'.

Rodgers has completely mismanaged him, it's his biggest failing so far as manager.

You're gonna have to expand on that one. I'm watching a player who, despite saying his fitness stats are as good as ever is walking through games at times, has been completely awful in others, and seems to not be the leader he should be.

I think Rodgers is really struggling because despite trying Gerrard in a number of midfield positions he's not delivered in any of them. It's horrible to watch stevie struggle. I don't think he's finished but he needs to only be playing one in three.

You'd rest him more often or are you talking positionally?

Positionally, he's never been a disciplined CM and he doesn't have the legs to compensate anymore. If you have Steven Gerrard in your team you put him in an area he can threaten the opposition. Playing Henderson at the head of the three and Gerrard behind him is bizarre.

Agree, also think there is an element of "keep Mr Liverpool on-board" and I don't mean that as a slight on Gerrard.

he's 33, hasnt had a good run of games for the guts of 2 years now.

and in all honesty, hasnt played well as a centre midfielder for god knows how long.

face the facts lads, the end of his career is fast approaching. He's not made of steel, he's only human.

sentiment needs to be put to one side here. Gerrard was an amazing player, but he's a shadow of his former self. And qute frankly needs to dropped.

It's where Gerrard wants to play though, no? Maybe Rodgers is pandering to him a little.

Dropped in favour of who?

Who else has been ripping it up in midfield this year ?

For this talk of how he's s***, past it, needs dropping the only midfielder to have created more chances this season than Stevie is Santi Cazorla, He needs help, he needs Lucas and Nuri beside him, He needs wide forwards that are goal threats making runs.
