A paltry 5 million for a Spanish international right back...

To me this is a no brainer.

5 million is an insult of an offer for Arbeloa.

If we accept it we are back to square one regarding lack of quality cover for right back.

It was painfully evident last season that we need strength in depth here.

Carra no longer wants to play there (remember Middlesboro away).

I would tell Real to stuff their offer and keep hold of Arbeloa for next season.

It is too crucial a time regarding our title prospects to head into the season with only one quality option at right back.

Hopefully if we finally land number 19 Arbeloa might even decide to pen a new deal next Summer.

Thoughts?

If only we had a, I dunno, lets call it a transfer thread, to discuss this and other such matters.

If the offer is that low I'd keep him. Real are viewing this deal the same way as Rafa did when Owen was coming back from Madrid, they don't want to be out major money for a player they had previously let go.

No one would use it. It'd barely make it to two pages

I already commented on this in the transfer thread.

We should keep him, as we need the strength in depth. He's a Spanish International and can also play at left back.

Even if we sold him for €8 million, we would still need a replacement of substance. Where would we find one with his attributes?

Unless we have another player of similar quality lined up, we shouldnt be selling.

Even if he does, the fee should reflect his value, and 5m surely doesn't.

He can leave for free in 12 months, it's £5m for a player who doesn't want to be here and in a position where we have just spent big or keep an unhappy player for 12 months and get squat. It's a no brainer.

"No brainer" is a horrible expression.

And this isn't anyway, but on balance if the lad wants to go and will jump through the hoops then we should let him go.

He can go for f*ck all in 12 months, best we take the £5m. He's clearly got his place in jeapordy, i don't blame him and good luck to the lad.

How much do people realsitically think he's worth?

I reckon if he had 3 years left we might be looking to get 7 or 8 mill. So 5 million isn't a million miles away

Plus we may be able to use that money to buy someone who actually wants to be here

With Aurelio out, I'd keep him personally. His versatility could be important with Johnson bedding in and Insua still learning his trade.

I'd rather take the hit of him leaving for nothing next summer than letting him go for peanuts to Madrid, who don't seem to mind paying over the odds for everyone else's players.

Ronaldo = £80mil.

So that is the starting point for any Liverpool player.

Unless I've missed something, wouldn't he be going there to play second choice to Ramos?

For 5 million (or even 7/8 for that matter) I'm not optimistic we can find someone who is of equal quality and experience...

I'm always surprised by players who get booted out of Real for not being glamourous enough, watch them buy superstar after superstar and then still want to go back and think they'll claim a place.

I agree with the sentiment that I would try and keep him and let him go next year for nothing and get Darby a year on loan and see what the outcome of Aurelio's injury is. Bob is a sold rb and proved he can play lb, it will cost at leat the £5 million to replace him on one side alone.

Everyone was praising O'Neill for keeping Barry, even though it cost them a 5/6m loss on the transfer fee, yet we should sell Arbeloa for 5m rather than let him leave for free?

I say don't sell for 5m.

- maybe we'll get a higher offer for real

- maybe we'll get a higher offer from another team

- maybe he'll sign a contract extension

Worst case is we lose 5m, but keep him a season longer.

I love mod wannabes. They clearly have a lot going on in their lives.

Sums it up for me. Have enjoyed seeing him here in our shirt. He's really given a f*** and its shown, you can't always say that about a player.

Keep him. Squad depth will help win trophies
