Last year was:

Carra -- Our stalwart and the leader at the back. Running out of gas and starting to slip.

Skrtel -- A rock at the back. Definitely a solid part of our future.

Agger -- Great skills, could form a legendary partnership with Skrtel.

Hyypia -- The legendary and aging player. Great in limited play.

To take us to winning the Championship next year, do we need?

????? -- The best CB that we could lay our hands on.

No.

The demise of Carra is greatly overstated. We've let in just TWO more goals than the winners of the Premiership. No doubt we need a good fourth centre-back, BUT ... relegating Carra to the '12 starts a season' role is madness.

Pick 2 from the 3 based on pre-season matches and training and then let those 2 keep their places with form.

If Carra, Agger or Skrtel dont perform then they get a rest until someone else doesnt perform.

Given Agger's ball playing ability and team's tendancy to sit back at Anfield, I would be inclined to play him and pick one from the other 2 as they generally have the same skill sets whereas as Agger has something totally different.

what about san jose?

He's not ready yet, just not strong enough. That Makukula fella bullied the life out of him when we played Bolton's reserves. Scored a hat-trick.

Get a RB to provide competition for Arbeloa and cover at CB. Ramos or Richards would be my choices, availability is a different story tho.

Sell Skrtel.

Stop with this madness. You're one of the good guys. If you and Rimbeux start turning into Andy then this place will really be in trouble.

It really isn't madness, mate. I'm serious. He's a very good player but I just don't think he'll become a great one. We're one of the best four teams in the world and the margin we have for error is tiny.

As said elsewhere, we discuss the goalkeeper, the midfield two, the front two as being the best in the world. We don't discuss our fullbacks (harsh on Aurelio but understandable given the injuries), our wide midfielders or our centre halves in the same way. Yet we only discuss buying or selling in the area of the fullbacks and the wide midfielders. Why is this? Trust me, at all levels of LFC improvement in every area in terms of personnel as well as improving the ability of that personnel will be going on. This isn't, in that context, a leftfield discussion.

You're the man with this particular plan. Tell us.

I don't watch enough football. I know the type of player - Alex if we could get him, Ledley King if he could run, Sami Hyypia if we had a time machine.

The tougher question is who you get in.

despatch scouts with the brief to not come home until they have found the new sami hyppia and a young stephane henchoz.

There's no outstanding, realistically available candidate, unfortunately. Given that, Skrtel needs to stay and we should take a chance on a good up-and-comer. Hangeland's a possibility but I'm not convinced.

Hangeland's not an up-and-comer.

Hyypia was never an outstanding candidate. He was just bloody brilliant.

It doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. We should be looking.

You're creating work that doesn't need done by selling Skrtel, its going to be hard enough replacing sami, to take on the task of finding a replacement on Skrtel is stupid. A fully fit Agger will be an additional bonus next season to take into account as well.

I think it does need to be done for reasons explained earlier. We are one of the top four sides in the world. The margin for error is tiny and we should have the best possible players in every position.

You get a third centre half that's absolute top class and in his prime then you promote a youngster to replace Sami.

Thinking we should improve on our CBs if we can is fair enough. Not even coming up with one realistic name but still calling for Skrtel to be sold is getting tedious TBH because you can do that for any position. For instance, we haven't had a 40+ goals/season striker since 1984 and being the best we desperately need one. Who that could be I've no idea but I'm willing to see Torres sold to get him in.
