Mr Makaveli Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I'd just like to say congrats to the lads and Rafa for putting in a serious title challenge. It is all we could have reasonably asked for this season if we were all to admit it at the start of the campaign. I seem to be one of the few who think Arsenal will actually beat Utd tomorrow as I know that wenger would rather die than have utd lift the title on his day at the theatre. Another trophyless season perhaps... (Im still dreamin that we can win it until its impossible)... but even if it is, for me it is progress. For me, we've shown utd that we are actually better than them. Gerrard and Torres started 12 times together in the league this year? something like that.. I guess I just wanted to say that we have had our crazy ups and downs over the last few years with the CL and FA cup wins. We havent had that crazy euphoric moment this season but even if we havent, i think that this is the best team we;ve had ever since I've been a liverpool supporter and I'm just lookin forward to next season with a grin on my face cause i honestly think it's ours. I think Gerrards determination is something that people kind of take for granted at this stage, Alonso has had a greats easona nd for the time that Torres has been on the pitch, he has scored some nice goals. Also delighted to see my tip star Benayoun really making his mark in our run in to the season. But good luck to us anyway, you never know lads.
charlie clown Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Couldn't agree more - no silverware but we've clearly made progress - if someone had offered me finishing above Chelsea and Arsenal, coming within the two games of the end of the seaon of winning the title AND taking more point off the top four than anyone, I would have biten your arm off (probably).
Chili Palmer Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Couldn't agree more - no silverware but we've clearly made progress - if someone had offered me finishing above Chelsea and Arsenal, coming within the two games of the end of the seaon of winning the title AND taking more point off the top four than anyone, I would have biten your arm off (probably). agree with that, however, and nows maybe not the time to say this as the season isn't even over, Rafa has set the bar as high as it goes now without winning it. so pressure is on for next year, and I think he will thrive on it.
Chewie Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 at the start of this season I kept saying that I really wanted a challenge and would be satisified with that as progress.... now that we're at this stage my biggest fear is that this was THE year to win it and we've actually lost it. You can't rely on what might happen next year... if at the start of this season you'd have predicted... - we'd score the most goals - have the best goal difference - lose the least games - have the best, by far, record against the top four head to head I'd have thought we'd be shoe-ins to win the league... having done all that to lose it almost seems criminal. Especially considering that one of the 2 games we lost was against Spurs who we battered.... - Spurs away, the bitters at home, Stoke at home.... there's 7 points that would see us sitting on 87 right now and I don't think it is unfair to say that we should have collected all 3 pts in each game... anyway - I am so proud of what they have done but also can't help but fear that this was our best chance and am hoping that it has not now gone... Chewie
Cam Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 If anyone leaves before next weeks Lap of Honour they should be banned from the ground. No silverware but a superhuman effort should deserve all our thanks.

Chewie Pretty much reflects what I was going to post. I think we're going to break all sorts of records, and to do that and not win the league, is painful. As for the games you mentioned, I'd also add Arsenal at home, because we really did batter them and it was just one those freak games where Arshavin could do no wrong for 60 minutes.

Chewie When you put it like that it is sickening the one other stat that you've forgotten to mention that let us down was number of games won, I hope Rafa realises now that draws are useless in this League. I can remember back to November/December time where we just drew with West Ham at Anfield to go top, at that time a few of us saw that as a missed opportunity to steal a march on the rest of the League and certainly stamp our authority. Others saw it as a good result because we just went top but hand on heart they must have knew it could and it did cost us later in the season. To have that record and not win the League is almost demoralising and its going to be even harder to win it next year.

Chewie I know where you're coming from but at the same time, 2, 3 season back we were talking about closing the gap and a lot of people were saying that it's all very well showing year on year improvement but Chelski, the mancs etc. were also going to improve years on year so it was a bit pointless & meaningless whay we did. I think what we have shown over the last 4 years is that at we are improving season by season faster and better than any of our rivals. If we contine to do that we WILL overhaul them at some point and it feels to me as if we are now at or very close to that point.
Dmitch Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 1st season in so so long i can actually be really proud of the effort we put in.. and to still be in the race in may was what i expect from Liverpool FC!
allawee Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The way we responded to the sniff of the title since the OT match we we practically thrashed every team we played and put the manc under huge pressure has been absolutely gripping and superb. I am not bitter, but despite their points tally this season, I still the mancs fluked the title and we played the best football this season, no argument about that. The future is bright, next year we will be even better and I can't wait. But, this season, for the 9 times we scored goals in the last five minutes, for the thrashing of RM and MU in the space of few days, for the fact that we scored 3 goals or more in 6 consecutive matched, for the fact that we carried the disability that is Keane for 1/2 the season, for the fact that we made Chelsea lose their amazing home record......... for all the wonderful memories and magic moments..... Thank you my heros
Repington Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Liverpool are in a strong position vis a vis the 'Top Four'. Raf will be in control of signings for the first time and will look to add depth to the squad to allow it to function whilst coping with injuries to key players; hence the putative signings of Johnson, Barry and Silva. It is also unlikely that both Torres and Gerrard will miss as much of next season as they have of this.United will be increasingly crippled by their debt repayment schedule; an additional factor is that their loans are with US bank whilst their income is in Sterling; hence the reason for not having signed Tevez. There are serious doubts that one or both of Tevez and Christiano Ronaldo will not be at Old Trafford next season; other than in the Away dressing room; both Scholes and Giggs will be even more peripheral and Hargreaves must be considered unlikely to last a whole season.Turning to the other members of the 'Big Four' Chelsea are heading for a summer of turmoil with either Ancelotti or Rijkaard arriving and a host of current first team players likely to depart: Bosingwa, Balletti, Carvalho, Ballack, Malouda, Kalou and Drogba for instance. As for Arsenal Wenger is already preparing the supporters for the signing of two promising players whilst van Persie, Adebayor, Gallas and most importantly Fabregas are all weighing up their options.
growler Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 yes, it has been a good season, but can we put the what if's away. yes we should have beaten x, y and z. but then you can also point to the last minute goals to win games that seemed to be gone. Fulham and boro. there are 4 points we gained, even the arsenal point at home. without those, the title race would have finished by easter.

ChewieWithout one of our players getting 20 goals. Nice even spread around the front 4 this season which has shown that others (Kuyt and Yossi) have stepped up to the plate when Torres and Gerrard have been out.
