...Liverpool striker Nathan Eccleston has signed a new two-year contract at the club. (Daily Mirror)

Anyone know anything about him?

wasn't there rumours about him earlier in the season about going to Blackburn? he was apparantly brought up to train with the first team then Rafa sent him back to the Academy, was pissed off about it and was looking away.

Yeah.

Aparently didn't get on with Pourie did he? (Though he's now left I think).

Not an avid youth/reserve watcher but seems to have done ok for them from what I can recall.

Liverpool's youth players show promise for the future

Liverpool have handed young striker Nathan Eccleston a new, two-year contract to stave off interest in one of Anfield's brightest prospects from a number of their Premier League rivals, with Blackburn and Everton thought to be among those tracking his progress.

The club's youth system has come under fire in recent weeks for not producing a single first-team player since Stephen Warnock, now at Blackburn, despite millions of pounds of investment.

Eccleston, an 18-year-old England youth international, though, is just one player whose promise suggests that might be about to change.

Manchester United fan as a kid Eccleston as well wasn't he?

Would be sweet if he became a top player and we'd snatched him from under their noses.

We signed him from Bury a couple of years back, good player. Plays a lot like Stan Collymore, drops deep, technically great. He's a bit inconcistent though.

Good bit on the other lads in there as well....

Krisztian Nemeth - Hungarian international striker likely to be the first of Rafa Benitez's imported youngsters to make the breakthrough at first-team level. Picked up from Liverpool's feeder club MTK, Nemeth is a ruthless finisher, although doubts remain over his lack of pace. A broken cheekbone on his debut put an end to a January loan spell at Blackpool, but that Benitez namechecked him as a reason for selling Robbie Keane two weeks later suggests his future his bright.

Dani Pacheco - Rafa Benitez plucked the Spanish prodigy from Barcelona two years ago and Liverpool's staff retain high hopes they may have unearthed a gem. His displays for the first team in pre-season hinted at what was to come, full of clever touches and excellent control, and the 18-year-old is expected to be promoted from reserve level next season.

Adam Pepper - A 17-year-old attacking midfielder in just his first year at Liverpool's Academy, Pepper is already regarded as the brightest prospect on Merseyside since Wayne Rooney. After a string of excellent performances for the under-18s, Pepper gave a glimpse of his potential when he scored from the half-way line against Blackburn last month. Xabi Alonso would be proud.

Lauri Dalla Valle - Another beneficiary of Benitez's global scouting network, Dalla Valle is a Finnish youth international boasting a clinical ruthlessness in front of goal. Hughie McAuley, the under-18s manager, regards him as a "real asset" while his countryman Sami Hyypia regards him as "one of the names for the future."

Thomas Ince - Despite his father, former Liverpool captain Paul Ince, making his name as a snarling midfield enforcer, the younger Ince is a quick, exciting left winger who has made a big impression in his first year at the club's Academy. Only 17, his physical presence has improved and, along with Pepper, he is seen as the home grown youngster most likely to make it to the first team in the coming years.

Pacheco is the one I have the highest hopes for. Think he could be in the first team squad next season.

From the reserves the two players I think could deffo make a big impact in the league are Darby and Nemeth.

I just can't see anything special in Darby yet. He looks steady enough but maybe just not at our level yet. Hope I'm wrong.

To be honest I don't see a lot in Darby or Nemeth. Hopefully Nemeth is just taking a long time to recover from his injury earlier in the season but in the games I've seen him recently he looks no better than average.

My biggest hopes in the reserves are Bouzanis and Pacheco. Both players will be top class IMO.

Just playinjg devil's advocate... if our U-18 and reserves have such good players, how come we are bottom of the reserve league?

a lot of clubs still use their reserves to play fringe squad members and players coming back from injury. Like Blackburn yesterday, they had a number of players who've had large amounts of top flight football. City did it as well last night.

The team has changed quite often over the course of the season and it just hasn't had a chance to build any momentum.

At the end of the day the reserves are there to supply the first team and this season we've had Plessis, Insua, El Zhar, Spearing, Kelly and Darby involved at one stage or another whereas last season we won the reserve league at a canter and didn't really bring anyone through.

There are a couple of top youngsters in the reserves/under 18s at the moment. Unfortunately there are also a couple there who are not developing at all.

Nemeth has looked a class apart from everyone on the pitch for the reserves nearly every time I've seen him play.

Really? That surprises me.

Thought the same last season but this season I've seen nothing in him at all. He lacks pace, his finishing and first touch have been wayward and he doesn't seem to be getting in the same sort of positions that he was last season.

Pacheco is well above him in terms of ability, in fact Pacheco stands out above most players I've seen at reserve level this season from any team. Seems to have such time on the ball and can create space so easily.

He has been injured off and on most of the season. Don't think he has played since breaking his cheekbone has he?

Yeah, he's played the last 2-3 games. Didn't do a lot last night and had a nightmare last week.

As I said, hopefully it's just taking him a while to get back into things as he's bit hit with a few injuries.

We've really missed Nemeth this season. We've actually been playing well for most of the season but we've lacked balance in the team with no #9 and no killer instinct.

Why are people so eager to write players off? Nemeth has been here for 21 months and has been injured for about 15 of them. He's clearly short of fitness and match sharpness. Why would you judge him on the last few games when he's coming back from injury but not judge him on the time when he was fit and scoring nearly a goal a game?

Did we pluck Pepper from Everton?

Pretty much yeah, he spent most of his time training with Everton but he spent periods with us, United and a few other clubs. He finally signed for us permanently at 15.

Cool. Remember reading a few years back he was one to look out for.

His mane will be manna for the tabloid hacks too

speaking of killer instinct, where is Jordy Brouwer?
