I'm kinda intrigued by King's injury situation.

He's said to have a chronic knee problem, that prevents him from training properly or from playing more than one game a week. (he's just pulled out of Engerland squad cos of it.

Redknapp: "There's no cure. There's no cartilage, nothing to operate on. It's just bone on bone. So it's just a question of managing it. It swells up after games and it normally takes seven days to recover. He rarely trains, he mostly just goes to the gym to keep himself ticking over."

What's wrong with it then?? Why does it swell up like that?

Must be heartbreaking for the player, he's plainly an excellent defender.

Thats what I was thinking.

Is he not just f***ing his knee up good and proper?

Jesus, Ledley, you have to use it to walk for the rest of your life!

Why the hell would you call him up for the national team, if his condition is chronic? Play him in the first World Cup match and then again in the final? He's not that good.

Can what Redknapp says be true? He has no cartilage left in his knee, and it's basically just bone? And that's why it swells up?

Can't get my head around that!

It's ridiculous. It's not like he's faking it to get out of international service he just can't play that many games on it, so why bother calling him up at al?

Doesn't surprise me "Team England" fvckin around with a player. Last call up, making Steven go all the way to "the Headquaters of Football" to make sure he was injured, when Mark Waller was already their.

Shame they didn't do that to the Mancs, who also pulled out, but that would be uncivil of them.

Because there's no cartilage?

Find it odd that nowt can be done about it.

From what I found out about it a couple of years back when a friend's kid was found to have something similar the problem is that the cartilage normally acts to create a frictionless surface for the joint action, but without it there is hard bone to bone contact and the area becomes inflamed from the subsequent abnormal range of movement. The range of movement problem will not be bad enough to prevent the person walking and running at first, but it will be enough to impact the flesh, tendons and ligaments in the area.

Its fecking painful - increasingly so as time goes by as it is degenerative. The wearing and abnormal movement will continue until failure of the ligaments, tendons or joint if it isn't treated properly.

Edit: There's a doc on the forum isn't there? Can't remember who it is, but I'm sure they could explain it better.

Cheers mate.

So there's literally no buffer for his knee. Just flesh on top of the bone.

As has already been said, he's really gonna suffer in later life

King is a decent defender, but if you listen to radio shows that discussing his situation this week you'd think he is the best defender in the world!

rafa looked at signing him in 2005. capello believes he's the best english centre-half of his generation and he's only really watched him playing on one leg. even half-fit he's miles better than terry. exceptional player and it's a shame he's been denied the opportunity to fulfil all of his talent.

Before these injuries he really did look like he's become an immense defender.

Was convinced he'd be Liverpool player as well, for some reason!

Yeah Elisha said on here that Rafa really rated him.
Apparently if had osgood schlater's when he was a promising youngster (13/14) but played on. Its where the bones and ligaments grow at different rates. Knee is very very susceptible to damage. Which he had in abundance. The rest is history. My bro in law had the same and was forced to rest for a year same age just before forest came scouting him when clough was manager. Ended up at torquay! But he'll walk when he gets older Edited by Senrab_nhoj
