Hull City midfielder Kevin Kilbane has been slaughtered by Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano.

Cassano steamed into Italy coach Marcello Lippi after being overlooked for their World Cup qualifier against Kilbane's Republic of Ireland.

Cassano also hit out at the selection of Udinese winger Simone Pepe, who kept his place in the squad despite some dire performances for both club-and-country.

He said: "Lippi says that this guy is a great dribbler down the wing, who beats opponents for fun. Man, Pepe couldn't even tie up his own shoelaces.

"When I was at Roma with Pepe, he was struggling to get in the reserves. He used to shine my football boots, and I would send him down to the shop to get me snacks.

"I am going to laugh when Italy play against Ireland, and Pepe makes Kevin Kilbane look like a peak Paolo Maldini."

Wasnt this a goal.com fake? As funny as it is.

As crap a footballer as he is I've an awful lot of time for Kilbane and it all goes back to the Ireland San-Marino game in 2007 when Staunton was manager. Stephen Ireland scored the winner in the 90th minute. Robbie Keane started doing his 'Whose the Man?' gestures and the look of contempt from Kilbane for him was just perfect. He was awarded Man of the Match and all he was short of doing was throwing it at the guy who presented it to him. He's a smart guy trapped in the body of a mediocre footballer.

I remember when people on (ssshh Koptalk) were asking the Irish lads should Liverpool shell out £5m for him from, think it was West Brom. I caked myself laughing.

I agree with Snookie, he always comes across very well and he's Irelands Dirk Kuyt the way he works. I dont mind him to be honest - just glad Gerry kept his money in his pocket back in the late 90's ;)

Used to work with a cousin of his, she said he was absolutely gutted we didn't go in for him cos he's a proper BoYhOOd rED.

Boyhood reds are overrated.

I'll be happy if we never sign another one again in my lifetime.

Was at the game on Saturday. A couple of f***wits behind me started giving him dog abuse after the goal. The best line of all; "you're not half the player Ian Harte is".... Thankfully I wasn't the only one to turn around and call them t***s.

I've had it with the home crowd for these games. The atmosphere in the stadium is dreadful, generally when you go to Croke Park for GAA it's buzzing non-stop. I know that's down to the nature of the sports, but it's horrendous for the Ireland games.

The t*** quota has increased exponentially. You used to have the odd muppet booing players who had any association with Rangers but that was about it. The fact that you have fools already complaining about Trapatoni says it all. The campaign is only at the half way stage, he's working with the poorest squad of players I can remember and yet he's in second place in the group. And the way you hear people talking about Andy Reed you'd think he was a fat Zinedin Zidane rather than a mediocre footballer player who couldn't cut it in an average premiership side.

The very minimum that should be expected from a professional footballer is that he keeps himself fit. That Reid can't even manage that says a lot about him. Please don't mention Molby because he was from a different era and, in terms of talent and ability, a different planet than Reid.

Then you've got the whole thing at half time sponsored by THAT paper. (I know its nothing to do with the FAI but it bugs me as a Liverpool fan)

I couldn't get over the booing the other night, at the whistle.. what a sack of sh**e that was.

I agree. The country is going through its leanest spell with talent.

The Andy Reid thing is farcical. You'd think Dunphy was his agent. He's sh**!!!

I think criticism is fair enough though. Not necessarily regarding the Reid agenda, but I do think some of his decisions are a bit baffling.

Continuing to play McShane and Kilbane as fullbacks is a bit daft when they're clearly all over the place defensively. Also I really don't get what he was doing leaving McGeady on for 89 mins on Sunday when he was clearly having a poor game, was wrecked after about 70 mins and wasn't exactly adding a huge amount to our defensive stability. That was just baffling.

So I think criticism is fair enough. Personally, I don't think he necessarily is getting all he could out of the (admittedly poor) resources he has at his disposal.

Take all those points but I think some of the criticism is premature and the manner in which it is being expressed is either premature, inane or completely over the top. I saw some of the panel discussion before the game over the weekend and Dunphy's analysis was spiteful and illogical. He started by questioning Trapatoni's 'character' and then 10 minutes later criticised him for questioning Reid's.

McShane is as poor a player as I have seen since the glory days of Ian Harte and that has a knock-on effect on everyone in the defence. Kilbane is obviously coming to the end of his career and he has never been much better than mediocre but he is still a better player than the one who appeared on Saturday. McGeady is like Keane. He is nowhere near as good as he thinks he is. I can't remember ever seeing him play and thinking anything other than he's an average player playing in a poor league.

Agree with pretty much all of that. Kilbane is alright like, I just think positionally he's going to get exposed time and time again at full back. And as for McShane... I reckon he makes Ian Harte look good to be honest ;)

Good result last night and performance but I'm still at the stage that I'm not sure us qualifying would be a good thing... we could end up getting mauled I reckon.

You're right but increasing the number of qualifiers to 32 means we might grab a draw from somewhere.
