Why? we have Dossena (who did very well against west ham) , Isnua (who did very well against Blackburn) and Aurellio (who is good when fit)

Might give him a chance to play himself back to full match fitness. Thoughts....

He can play himself back to full match fitness at centre-back. (I presumed Sami got the nod on Saturday because he is ineligible tonight so Agger has to play.)

That sounds right to me, too.

Possibly Sami played against West Ham and Blackburn to counter Cole / Santa Cruz (did well, too). Like you say Fred, he can't play tonight, so Agger will I expect alongside Carra. Doss at LB (with Insua back on Saturday). Keane up front (and back to the bench on Satdee). Wouldn't surprise me to see Lucas start either.

He could even give Carra a rest and play Sami and Agger.

I'll bet you £1 million that Sami won't play today

Yes. Of course you are right.

I'm losing my marbles.

is there a case for 3 at the back - when we are playing teams with not a lot of attacking threat? (i.e. when they are parking the bus?)

We could try a 5 man midfield or 3 in attack? with Masch dropping back?

Carra aside I'm never happy with CBs playing at FB - for me that was why Traore was such a liability at left back, it wasn't his natural position, he was unable to read the game from there and his poisitional awareness was skewed.

If we're gonna move Agger around when Skrtel gets back, i'd like to see him play DM.

Not a bad shout when Skrtel fully fit. Agger and Skrtel hopefully will be our future centre backs but this keeps him in the team and provides cover and gives him more first team experience. Remember Lawrenson started a left back and it never stopped him from becoming a great centre back. It could solve a problem position for us that Dossena has failed to do and with Aurelio injury problems I think it is worth a bit of a run. Also Insua looks a little lightweight but maybe with time who can say but not yet.

He looks anything but lightweight.

I think it's a great shout. Gary Gillespie had a good stint at right back too. Tommy Smith did well as a centre back and full back if I recall.

Agger will have to prove he can play the role but he'd come to it already a far better standard of footballer than Dossena, Aurelio, and Insua (for now). I don't see any harm in giving him a go in the role.

There is an implicit assumption here that when all our centre-backs are fit Carragher and Skrtel is the best pairing. I don't see that at all.

With all due respect to Champion's League winner Djimi.

Agger >>>>Traore.

It's a terrible idea. For a number of reasons. Agger has always looked awkward when exposed to pace in the centre half position never mind one on one in a left back position. He's probably not got the fitness currently to bomb up and down the flank for 90 mins as would be needed, his ability to distibrute the ball would be limited from full back and he'd have far less time on the ball than he has at centre half to pick a pass.

The players you name are from a totally different era with totally different demands, so they really can't be used as a reasonable example.

Unless it's an absolute emergency, he'll never play there.
