RAFA BENITEZ is weighing up a move for Brazilian defender Aislan - but will only follow up his interest if he can be sure the 20-year-old will qualify for a work permit.

Liverpool looked into the possibility of taking the Sao Paolo star to Anfield in the last transfer window, but backed off when it emerged that acquiring a permit at that stage was likely to prove too difficult.

But Aislan remains on their radar and his agent, Paolino Oscar, expects Liverpool to make a firm offer for the towering defender in January.

Sao Paolo are hoping to receive a substantial fee for Aislan, who has a release clause of £10.5m in his contract, but Liverpool would not be willing to pay anything like that amount for his services.

Oscar insists that Aislan will not be handing in a transfer request, even though his client is flattered by Liverpool’s interest.

“They had revealed interest in the past one or two months, when the window was open,” he said.

“Now, I find that it was more difficult because everything is closed in Europe.

“It is in Sao Paulo’s hands and it is they who decide. If Aislan is told to leave, very well. If not, that is good also.

“I have respect for Sao Paulo and I do not do blackmail, therefore it is the club who must make the primary move.”

Aislan – whose full name is Aislan Paulo Lotici Back – is 6ft 4ins and is considered the most promising centre back to emerge out of Sao Paolo’s acclaimed youth system in several years.

He is a regular in the Sao Paolo side and is renowned for his aerial ability.

Meanwhile, Reds full back Philipp Degen is facing three weeks on the sidelines after it was confirmed that he suffered two broken ribs in the Carling Cup tie against Crewe.

Degen, who was brought to Anfield on a free transfer in the summer, was making his first competitive start for Liverpool in Tuesday night’s tie after he was ruled out for several weeks following groin surgery.

Does he play in his bare feet?

Do scumbag dubliners keep trotting the phrase "chisty's bad on the stuff again" about him?

In 15 years time will he still refer to himself as a superstar on one performance on top of the pops?

The Aslan fixation tends to be a northside thing. A friend of mine worked in a pub in Howth and it was always on the jukebox. I saw them on new years eve in the point when I was 17. No interest in the band but it was an excuse to get drunk.

According to the Brazilian journo's we offered 2m euro for him but they refused. The idea is to buy but let him develop there until it is time to replace Sami. Oh and unlike Barrett says, he isn't a regular, he has only just turned pro and made his debut this year and so far has played 6 games: 3 in the National League, 2 in the Copa Sud-Americana and 1 in the state League.

The reserve of São Paulo's defence, Aislan, 20, is in Liverpool's sights. The defender was "discovered" by the English club's Brazilian scout, Marcos Fraga, who advised the Spanish coach Rafa Benitez to buy him.

The English club has made an offer of 2 million euros (around R$ 5.4 million) for the player, who has a contract with São Paulo until April, 2010. (sic) The price was dismissed by the President of the Morumbi team, Juvenal Juvêncio.

"We're going to see about his future in the next few days. If he leaves, 70% of his fee is São Paulo's and 30% is mine, as I'm his backer since he was 12. If he wants to stay, we will draw up a new contract." said the ex-defender Oscar, who manages Aislan.

As the european transfer window is shut, the objective of Liverpool is to come to an agreement with Aislan and start to prepare him for the next few seasons he can reinforce the English team.

From another source:

The interest from the English isn't recent. It started in March, when Aislan spent a week trialing with Sheffield United, of the second English division. Since then, the English team, through Carlos Fraga, has been keeping an eye on his career. In the Brazilian League he has played 3 games. He was sent off against Atletico-PR and started against Portuguesa and Figueirense.

So..... if Sheffield get relegated by letting in one decsisive goal on the last day of next season, and they MIGHT'VE not let it in had Aislan been playing for them, it'll all be Rafa's fault?

Makes sense.

I just can't come to terms with us going after Brazilian defenders.

Argies, yes.

yet imagine how boss we'd be now if we had cafu and robert o'carlos.

edit: in their primes, not on zimmer frames.

I may be wrong but didn't you want us to sign Naldo or was that someone else? ;)

Oh give me a break. You know damn well I'm schizophrenic

I've still got the mindset that the Brazilians just aren't great defenders. That was certainly true up untel very recently.

Individually, each of those are very good. Alves isn't the greatest defender but is super going forward. Naldo has great technique and is super in the air -- he reminds me of Sami a bit. Alex is a bit of a lump and hasn't looked as good as I'd thought.

But I'll stick to my original premise. The Brazilians just don't inspire confidence from me for defenders, and the Argies do. Hopefully we sign this kid and he makes me eat my words.
