Athletico Madrid sign ex-Liverpool starThursday 26 June 2008 - 14:54:21 - Click to post or view

Athletico Madrid have signed Florent Sinama-Pongolle on a four year contract from Recreativo Huelva. They have agreed a fee of €8million for the striker, who scored 22 goals in his two seasons in Huelva after failing to gain a regular place with Rafael Benitez at Liverpool.

He will now have a chance to prove himself on the highest stage again as Atletico have qualified for the Champions League after fourteen years in the wilderness.

Benitez took Sinama-Pongolle to Liverpool as a 17 year-old starlet, but he never got into his good books and ended up being loaned to Blackburn for six months before Recreativo came in with an offer.

There are also reports that Atletico have secured the signature of the French International goalkeeper Gregory Coupet from Lyon, where he has won seven Ligue 1 titles, but talks have hit an impasse as Lyon are looking for €3million to buy out the two years left on Coupet's contract, but Atletico only want to pay €1million. There is much discussing to be done before that deal is signed

When Bellamy and Pongolle were at Blackburn, Bellamy was better.

Bellamy was better than Pongolle when we signed him.

Because Pongolle was really outstanding when he was here, wasn't he?

I liked Pongo. I thought he was a lot better than Bellamy any day of the week.

He scored some vital goals for u against Luton & Olympiakos to name two.
