If we draw 1-1 and it goes to Extra Time we would both have played 90mins home and away. If after ET it is 2-2 Arsenal go through on the away goal rule, surely this is unfair as they have played longer away? I know these have always been the rules, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be questioned and/or changed.

By contrast we will have played at home for longer. Which is usually considered to be an advantage.

It gets worse. In the semi, they don't count in extra time.

I don't think away goals should ever count in ET in any circumstances.

For me - the two teams have played two 90 minute games of football and have drawn a blank.

From that point on - the scoring should start again - so away goals shouldn't count as any more.

That would swing things in favour of the home side though, assuming home advantage actually counts for something.

What ? Are you saying that if Chelsea and Liverpool both scored in extra time last year then it would still have gone to penalties.

I'm no book worm for rule books but it was my understanding that away goals did count in ET no matter if it was a last 16, QF or SF ?

Can someone confirm this.

maybe we should play 15 minutes at one ground and fifteen minutes at the other

Or play the whole of extra time at Goodison

Or kick all the fans out at 90 minutes

can't recall a CL SF going to extra time in recent years but i've never heard that away goals rule doesn't count in extra time of semi finals and be amazed if it was true.

I am with Andy, I don't see why the home team has to score more goals than the away in extra time.

On the UEFA regulations it says the following, with no mention of the semi being different?

For matches played under the cup (knock-out) system, if the two teams

involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team

which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure

does not produce a result, i.e. if the two teams score the same number of

goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be

played at the end of the second leg. If, during extra time, both teams score

the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club

qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty

mark (Article 16) determine which club qualifies for the next stage.

Just how pissed were you for the home leg against Chelsea last year?

The fact that it hadn't helped the home side score for those 90 minutes suggests that if it went to ET - then it doesn't count for much.

the fact that it's gone to ET doesn't mean the home side haven't scored

e.g. semi final last year v Chelsea :bleh: - (see, i do remember it you cn*ts)

The league cup semi finals are usually very intersting and away goals don't count in that

they do but only after extra time, not 90 mins.

its the same in the play offs isn't

I just think teams will play much more freely if that was the system in europe as well
