The difficult first season!

What a load of b******s that phrase really is.

 

I have said it several times before and I will happily say it again when this lame excuse of mediocrity are being handed out to the right, left and center.

 

The difficult first season is an excuse made up to defend poor/average players, the good players take the level after getting to know their team mates, the reason they do this is because they are good/great players while poor/average players play poor/average because that is their level.

 

We often hear people using the "myth" about Henry`s poor first season as a justification for their view and you just have to laugh, the poor first season when Henry scored 26 goals overall for Arsenal.

 

I wish our players struggled like that the first season.

 

But if we look at it, the truth is that our great players have not struggled at all in their first season, let me name Torres, Alonso, Reina, Mascherano etc as the prime examples, while our supposedly great players that only had this difficult first season like Pennant, Kuyt, Crouch etc well they are s**** and they have always been s****, that be their first, second or last season, its irrelevant and poor excuses.

Pires & Hleb are two examples of outstanding Premiership players that took time to settle.

Vidic was poor in his first (half ) season

Drogba was Average in his first season (for a £24m striker), he got better after that

Ian Rush struggled in Italy.

Henry was fairly anonymous for the first 3 or 4 months and then finished the season well as I recall. I might be wrong though?

Lets take a look at the players mentioned above.

 

Ronaldo was young and have gradually become better and better something that was likely to be his progress given his abilites and skill.

 

Drogba did have a great first season doing the job he was asked to do in the system they played at the time with one striker holding up the ball feedding midfielders running into the box.

When they started playing two strikers Drogba started to score more goals as well, all a naturally progress as well.

 

Hleb has been one the same level as he is now, that it has taken a couple of seasons before most people spot his abilities is another matter, he also play a role in the team that suits him better and he gets more time on the ball now that Henry is history.

 

Pires had a more than decent start as well but became gradually better as Arsenal changed their system to play more to his strengths and to take advatage of his runs into the box.

 

Vidic came in January and needed some time to get to know the system and his team mates, but not a full season.

 

There is a huge difference between a couple of weeks/months and a full season.

My personal favourite is the Pennant one, a player that had lived all his life in England, started in Nottingham, then moved to London, then to Leeds, then back to London, then to Birmingham and finally ended up here.

 

He would apparently need a season to adapt to his new club and we could not count on himto deliver the first season, it had nothing to do with him being s****, it was all down to him needing time to settle in a new town and a new club.
