Steven Gerrard is a freak of nature in that he can actually be an 8/10 or 9/10 player in any area of the game he puts his mind to. This year, he's apparently put his mind to set pieces and the difference is there for all to see.

I think Gerrard and Torres are loving the fact that they are no longer the only matchwinners in the team. That extra bit of security and confidence is making them both play better.

Gerrards been carrying this team for years. He shared the burden with Owen for a while though. I think Gerrard, Torres and another player of their class would be enough to see this squad win the league. Obviously we need CB cover but not having to rely on a single player like Gerrard every game is a huge plus. ManU share it between Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez. Perhaps Babel could turn out to be the 3rd?!

?

it's funny that you think Babel might be the guy to relieve SteG off some pressure...he's a long way from that.

He's inconsistent and lazy

The other night against Porto he looked like he wanted out - at the point of when Rafa subbed Benayoun.

In time he could share the burden if he lives up to his potential. He's played a handful of games for us so far.

Look at Henry's first season and even players like Pires. He could end up being just very good or really great.

If you think what I said is that funny you obvioisly think Rafa is full of s**** for signing such a slack a*** player.

no i don't think Rafa is full of s*** I think you are for bigging him up ;)

you've managed to contradict yourself - but anyhow, talking about potential - it's always potential...we've allegedly had the new zidane, le gems etc...i'm not going to prophetize about anyone

if he does it, he does - if he doesn't I'm not going to feel short-changed AGAIN

He was awesome today. Much better than on wedneday. Thought he helped Lucas out really well which added to his overall performance. Much more disciplined. I was slightly critical of him on wednesday as he offered very little support for Mascherano defensively. He did today and looked a far better player for it.

The ball he played through today reminded me massively of when he used to play balls through to Owen.

yeah, defo. he's got a top class striker up there making the runs now. was a world class through ball.

Exactly what I thought when I saw it

Yeah, his set pieces in general have come on leaps and bounds in the last 18 months, they're really dangerous now, both indirect and direct.

Me too. It seems like Gerrard's finally worked out how to play with Torres. I suspect we'll see many more goals like that this season.

As soon as it happened I thought of the 1-0 away to Sunderland in 2002. Perfect long through ball by Gerrard, taken by Owen in his stride who just clipped it past the keeper.

I had a flashback of the Gerrard-Owen goal at Highbury on Arsenal's no losses season.

I think he has lots of potential but certainly not this season, he looks best as an impact sub with 25 minutes left.

Our 3rd out and out match winner is Kewell if he can stay fit.
