For a while there I thought he was going to be a decent player for us. Shame for him.

Former Liverpool and Blackburn star David Thompson has been forced to retire because of injury.

Thompson had recently been on trial at Sheffield United, but failed to win a deal at Bramall Lane.

The 30-year-old has struggled with a knee injury for the last few seasons and he has now been advised to hang up his boots.

Thompson came through the youth ranks at Liverpool before joining Coventry for £3million in August 2000.

The diminutive midfielder went on to play for Blackburn, Wigan, Portsmouth and Bolton before being released at The Reebok Stadium last summer.

Ill always remember back at the height of the Owen hysteria after the 98 World cup.

We'd just beaten Bolton 2-1, and owen was gettin mobbed gettin to his car (used to still come to the main stand car park them days). Thompson walks out with his bird and off to a taxi at the Shankly gates. Half way out he kinda looked at Owen, with a rueful kinda wish it was me look.

Good player.

Remember him scoring in the 7-1 game v Southampton at the anny road end. Always liked him as he had a but of the Houghtons about him - in so much as he was short.

Remember a f***ing beautiful Cruyff turn/nutmeg he did at Anfield from a high ball, people would have been raving nowadays if Rooney did it.

Always thought he was an alky.

Yes - supposedly so. Known to have a bit of an attitude problem too. Still - very decent player on his day.

I remember him scoring after 15 seconds or so, ran onto a hoof barged the defender out the way and half volleyed it in, b*****d disallowed it.

I always preferred him to Murphy, quicker, so much more fight, and a hell of a shot on him.

Home to Newcastle, think Redknapp got a late winner that day

never lived upto his potential - i remember when him and carra made their breakthroughs into the 1st team. Both looked to have similar ability. Just look at them now. Shows you how Carras commitment and love for the football club has made him so successful - he could have easily gone down the same road as Thomo.

sorry to hear he's having to hang up his boots but I was glad when he move on from Anfield. Never thought he was good enough and it used to wind me up no end after he'd left when there'd be people bleating on about how we should never have let him go cause he was a local lad and loCAl LaDz aRe beTtEr.
