Heskey recalled to England squad

England coach Steve McClaren has called Wigan forward Emile Heskey into his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia.

The Wigan striker won the last of his 43 caps against France at Euro 2004 but McClaren saw the 29-year-old in action at Newcastle on Saturday.

More to follow.

Get the kleenex out Kev!

well done emile. still a better option than smith, defoe, nugent, johnson etc. good luck to him.

To play alongside Owen he definitely is. Ashton may be getting closer to fitness and will then be very much worth a look. It'd be close between Heskey and Bent to make fifth forward for me in any given England 22.

Winter is running the line that Owen asked for him and SCS obliged.

Also, I'm sure I remember hearing or reading stuff to the effect of SCS personallly blaming Heskey for England losing to France 3 years ago and lobbying against his further inclusion.

i think he possibly said taking Rooney off was a mistake, he certainly didn't blame Heskey for the loss - might well have been Heskey's last appearance, mind.

It might even be something I picked up on here not in print, just remember words to that effect.

I'm beyond worried about the guy as manager, even if we scrape through, I'm not confident he'll get to the knockout even. There is a desperation about him, fine, these are the times for that and should bring out something is those capable, but it's also a feeling he's being led by the nose and doesn't know his own mind, from the El Tel blamed experiment with a back 5, through the Beckham recall and following farce to this jump to it with Owen. This latest one says a great deal about his state of mind, stuck enough to try anything but without the clarity to think of anything.

Out of those available Heskey is the best option.

If I was SCS I would sit Emile down and get him to watch the s**** spouted by Alan Mullery about him on SSN this morning (should not be considered, he won't play him so why bother picking him for the squad blah blah). No doubt this kind of stuff will be repeated by the tabloid journos. If that doesn't fire him up to prove people wrong nothing will.

On his day Emile is a fantastic player. Can't say I'm particularly bothered about England but I hope Emile plays and does well.
