Some people have really been getting their knickers in a twist around here lately; at first you try to ignore it but after a while it grates and grates and even becomes genuinely stressful.

Over the last week or so it's been:

'terrible close season'

'contracts not tied up'

'Rafa is leaving'

'Xabi is leaving'

'Americans aren't rich enough'

'We'll miss out on all our transfer targets and buy no-marks'

In the last couple of days all the genuinely important playing staff who needed to be tied into contracts have been sorted, or are about to be - we've just signed four world class players who love Liverpool. We're about to see plans which Councillor Storey who has no allegiance with us says have the 'wow factor' and prove the city has 'struck gold' when Gillett and Hicks took over. In the words of Paul Tomkins, whose writing I absolutely love reading - 'this is a great time to be a red'.

Quite honestly I'm getting absolutely sick to the back teeth of these transfer worriers who go mental during the summer and start clogging up the boards with their frustration at Julio Jordio and Snoogy Doogy still not having been signed 15 minutes after the final whistle has blown for the Champions League Final.

I've got to say, Rafa didn't help with his stupid rant after the final. He doesn't get much wrong and I love the man, but that was a moment of misjudgement so unlike him I still can't work it out to this day and it gave all the idiots ammunition.

But within a few days we've seen everything immediate sorted, and now to the transfers. The lesson is, if they don't get delivered in the next 24 hours, don't go shooting your mouth off about how the Americans aren't rich enough or putting up whiny posts about Rick Parry; just have some patience. When Rafa said things needed to be acted on quickly he was right - they have and we've seen the culmination of some hard work since the final this week.

Things have rarely looked so promising. Have patience and see who we manage to get - evereyone at the club will be working their b*llocks off behind the scenes now but sometimes it takes time. Negotiations with clubs and players can be long and painful, and sometimes deals can't be struck - that's just business.

I've got every confidence that we've got some top names on the list this year, so lets try and be positive rather than listen to the hacks who know absolutely f*ck all in general and start panicking at the first sign of any problems.

I'm sure this summer will be a good summer, whether it comes together now or takes a little time to get the players we really want. All good things come to those who wait...

Hear, hear!

The news about Xabi has capped a great week for LFC.

Feck the drama queens, happy days are here again :D

As much as I am delighted to have got our best players under long term contracts I think I'll wait til the end of the summer to judge whether we are better placed to make an assault on the league. What we have done is preserve the core of players that have got us to two european cup finals in 3 years. This summer will decide whether we can get the players to have a sustained league challenge.

We havent signed anyone that you would think are going to be automatic first teamers so we cant judge yet whether we have signed our top targets. I dont want to dampen your optomism but theres still a lot of work to be done before we can call this summer a successful one.

i now see transfer speculation threads as an opportunity to marvel at the potential for misery and f***wittery the human psyche can concoct, rather than as an insight to the likely personnel changes for the squad next season.

Positive as all that's happened in the last day or two is, the manager still felt the need to speak out about how we were doing business. That's a worry.

The only concrete thign that G&H have produced prior to these contracts (which Gerrard & Carragher would have signed regardless) is an enormous debt, one that the club will be servicing.

I'm encouraged that our big players seem to be happy at the club, everyone is, but we need to take big strides this summer - and I remain pretty cynical until we start taking them.

Some very good points in the original post but I disagree that Rafa was wrong to speak out after the final. That, IMO, was three years of frustration with Parry spilling out and he knew that by making the point clear publically that it would force the owners, quite rightly IMO, to step up to the plate and show they mean business. In fairness to G&H, it seems that they have responded positively to it and look like they'll back him. What happens remains to be seen but if it brings us two world class signings that help us to the league or at least a sustained challenge then the rant will go down as one of the defining moments of his tenure at Liverpool.

Exactly my stance

I admire your eternal optomism Leo No.8, but I am a sceptic and when Rafa makes out spoken attacks on our way of doing business, I have to worry about how good we are at negotiating the best players to come to our club.

None of us know the amount that is being given to rafa to spend (... the way it should be), seeings as rafa doesn't know himself (based on reports only), the local media downplaying how much we have, and G&H saying we'll buy snoop dogg and it is player specific budget. Until the players start coming in, we cant judge the calibre of players that is going to take us to the next level. We have secured our best players, but we need more whether its a few or many, to change us from also rans to genuine league contenders.

Lucas is a 20 yea rold kid that might start a few games, and maybe make a case, but he's far from an automatic start.

Fair point but you dont win brazilian player of the year for nothing. Rafa certailnly expects big things of him. I was more making the point that i do class him as a big signing.

don't worry, Harry Kewell is back.

You're actually starting to sound a bit desperate in your efforts to wind up people now.

No one is biting. Time to go back to red issue.

Not really. We meekly surrendered the European Cup final, we haven't sold the deadwood and we haven't signed any top names. Can't see what there is to be pleased about.

I think we may be surprised, i can see him playing across the midfield, i can see him being used instead of Xabi when we really need to go at teams, his direct running

Agreed. I do think that we may need to invest on a forum psychiatrist for the silly season.

Obviously they'd be restricted from going into the Genny though.

I think its incredible that people are complaining about not signing players, etc. Firstly, the Spanish season is still underway and will not finish for two weeks. Secondly, our main left wing target has been playing for his national team, since their own league finished. If nothing has happened by the end of June, then my optimism would have receded considerably.

Aside from that, we have signed our strongest players to long term contracts. We are also 10 days away from seeing the new and improved plans for the new stadium.

My take on Rafa's complaints after the final, where that he felt that had we signed his 1st choice players, then we would have won the final. We are now in a situation where any targets, outside of the Spanish League, are free of any football commitments. If we dont see any progress within the next 3 weeks, then I could understand the pessimism, but until then, it's a case of wait and see.

Exactly.

When we've secured Rafa's targets - a world-class striker and the likes of Malouda, Alves (or the like) then we can enjoy a cigar.

To be honest, it is just as drama-qeenish to get all het up about some of the nonesense that gets posted at this time of year as it is to post said nonesense in the first place.

Take it all with a pinch of salt. Yes, there are plenty of inane and pointless thread started at this time of year with lots of people worrying themselves stupid over things that they know nothing about and have no control over - but there are every year. Tick follows tock. Someone posts a s*** thread about lack of investment or whatever this year's bug bear is; someone else gives them both barrels as soon as things strat looking up.

Meet the new muppets, same as the old muppets - literally in many cases, as it isn't just the 'new arrivals' who have a monopoly on spouting rubbish (though that isn't a dig at anyone in particular). Much better to just pick and choose the threads that you read/respond to instead of getting drawn into and allowing yourself to be wound up by over-reaction and speculation.
