Will a team outside of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester United win the league title within the next 20 years?

I honestly cannot see it happening.

Yes, IMO. Perhaps because some other club becomes immensely rich, perhaps because the level of money in football is dramatically reduced, perhaps because there's an Italian-style explusion of some of the above clubs from the top League etc. etc.

It would be interesting to see what the odds would be on that.

Of course. I think you can look maybe five years max ahead in some safety, but there are still big questions about the stability of at leat Arsenal and Chelsea in that period. Only five years ago look where Leeds were. Over the next 20 years I'm near certain someone else will win it.

Looking in 1987, many would have said it's tough to look past Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal, Forest and Man U for the foreseeable. In the meantime, Leeds, Blackburn and Chelsea have all won it. Forest are a couple of tiers down. In five years we could be looking at Sunderland and Villa as contenders, it's easily possible.

20 years is a very long time. In 87 you'd never have picked Chelsea out as potential champions. The Mancs hadn't won it for 20 years and Arsenal hadn't for 16. You'd have thought Everton might have some more titles in them and you'd have definitely thought we had more than 2 left in us over the next 20.

the premier league won't exist in twenty years.

It's a real risk. I'd like to think, or at least hope, that fan opinion will keep a European league at bay. For all money flowing into fooball from TV and talk of internet match sales in the future, the scramble for bigger stadiums suggest the clubs still see bums on seats as a major source of income. How many of those stadiums would be full for mid table clashes against a European side with no local fans you can have a bit of banter with?

Yeah, the lack of banter's bound to hit ticket sales ;)

It's not a factor in why it means more to play Everton or the Mancs than Portsmouth or Villa? It's a huge part of what makes local rivalries what they are. You'd lose all if you were playing Lyon or Dortmund or Inter instead.

I don't think the so-called 'banter' has got much to do with that. It's more about literally what it says: 'local rivalry'.

A large part of wanting to get one over on your local rivals is the bragging rights though, surely? I think it's one of the reasons why a European League would not be a winner with the fans anyway.

All the clubs likely to be involved are used to finishing no worse than 4th or 5th in bad season. Half of them would have to get used to being midtable or worse, which is bound to hit attendances. The lack of a locality to rivalries isn't going to help sell what are meaningless midtable fixtures either in a way that a derby will still ignite the fans' interest in a poor season.

Bragging rights? Banter?

I don't understand this language...

I don't think a European League would work and I think a big reason for that WOULD be the loss of local rivalries, but not for the reasons you're talking about.

A mid table match between (say) Arsenal and Barcelona just isn't interesting - whereas an Arsenal-Spurs game is, regardless of where they are in the table.

2 years ago I picked up £50 on a bet with a Rangers supporting freind ofmine, who proclaimed two years before that, that no other side other than United & Arsenal would win the league in the next five years

alot can happen

No none-top 4 club will in for 20 years as we're going to win it every season

I don't want to make a habit of this standing up for Newcastle nonsense I seem to have stumbled into in the last couple of days, but Newcastle were in the champions league as recently as 2002/2003.

So are you tipping them for the treble if they get Allardyce?:wacko:

No, don't be daft. Just think if he's given money and a bit of time (unlikely at that club I know) he'll improve them from where they are now. Think he could probably get that current squad with a couple of additions up into the European places fairly quickly.
