jimmylibel Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 STEPHEN Warnock has urged his close pal Scott Carson to follow his example and quit Liverpool this summer for the sake of his career. Carson has earned some rave reviews for his performances with Charlton, where he has spent the season on loan, and Warnock believes his former Anfield team-mate has the ability to challenge Paul Robinson for the England goalkeeper's jersey one day. However, if Carson is to fulfil his true potential and become a regular on the international stage, Warnock insists he must leave Liverpool and establish himself as a first team regular elsewhere, just as he has done at Blackburn. advertisement"Everyone has been talking about Ben Foster as a future England goalkeeper and Scott has gone a bit unnoticed," said Warnock, who made 66 appearances in five years at Liverpool. "But that's probably because Ben has the Manchester United connection, where he is deemed as the long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar. "The thing with Scott is he is up against Jose Reina at Liverpool and Jose is a similar age, so it's going to be difficult for Scott to push him out of the team. "Scott may possibly have to move on from Liverpool to further his career because it is so difficult for a goalkeeper. "That's the only position he can play. Players like myself can play around the team and get experience that way, but if Scott has to move elsewhere to get his experience it would possibly benefit him. "It's always hard to leave a club like Liverpool but I have no regrets about making the move. "If I had still been there, I might not even have been on the bench at Chelsea the other night. "At Blackburn, I know I am going to be in and around the squad, and that is what I always wanted. You don't want to be sat on the bench or watching on TV. "If someone turns around in ten years and says do you remember such a player at Liverpool?' nobody would remember him. "At the end of your career, if you say you've played 700 games at Blackburn or 100 at Liverpool, it's totally different. "We are professionals. We want to play every game and I'm no different to anybody else." Link

Leo No.8 Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Absolutely - he's quite clearly right. Like I said on the loanees thread, the best thing about how well Carson has done is we should get a very good fee for him now. I'm not sure where he'd go though - would we sell him to Arsenal for example who would look a logical destination?

It would be a shame to sell him to one of our biggest rivals, but at the end of the day he should go to the highest bidder, especially if it gives Rafa extra funds to play with.
Guest Parr_Zee Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 straight swap for baptistaWhy would Real Madrid want Carson when they've got Casillas??
Ronnie Whelan Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I dont think it would be as hard to move on for Carson as it was for Warnock. Im sure we will see it happen, as assuming Pepe stays injury free his first chances are very limited even though he is a quality keeper. We should get a decent fee for him, but then who do we replace him with? Jerzy the slave will be off in the summer too.
Bailo Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Doesn't Wenger have issues with young English goalkeepers? Doesn't seem to trust them at all re: Taylor and Wright. Would be surprised to see him go for carson.
Kopfaithful Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 now lehman has agreed a new contract, i don't see why carson would leave liverpool because he doesn't want to sit on the bench to go and sit on the bench at arsenal.
alias75 Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Wouldn't blame Carson at all if he wanted 1st team football, if it was an older keeper in front of him he should stick it out, but Reina is going to be here hopefully for the next 5-10 years. Tough to lose a very good keeper but at least after a season with Charlton his value is much more than we paid for him. Think we could get 4 million plus for him. Hes under contract here so he cant hold us to ransom and he could be used to get another player.
fyds Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Carson is a very good keeper - better for me than thewonderfully described on this forum 'fat mess' that is England's current No.1. He is good enough to be with a top team, and with Lehmann signing a new contract and with adequate back up, all the top UK teams are spoken for. You know a good club in need of a good keeper? Bayern Munich - would they go for him, and would he go for them? I doubt it...but hey - stranger things etc.

Lehmann's 37, Reina's 24. So it's the difference between maybe another year as number 2 or the forseeable future as a number 2.
Guest Kaizer Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 (edited) Carson belongs in the ever growing completly overrated English footballer category. Edited April 30, 2007 by Kaizer
Gomez Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Carson belongs in the ever growing completly overrated English footballer category. Only overrated if you compare him to Reina, he's being compared to Robinson, Kirkland and that manc bloke. He as good, if not better than anyone them. He certainly makes less mistakes than them. If Reina signs this long term deal we are offering him, I would expect Carson to leave, but lets wait until then at least.
Leo No.8 Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 (edited) Carson belongs in the ever growing completly overrated English footballer category. And what exactly do you base that statement on? Basically the general concensus is that he's been very good all year for Charlton, but nobody is saying he's worth £15m. Who's over-rating him? Edited April 30, 2007 by Leo No.8

And what exactly do you base that statement on? Basically the general concensus is that he's been very good all year for Charlton, but nobody is saying he's worth £15m. Who's over-rating him? Carson has lost Charlton more points than he has won them this season, he is average at best, his positioning is utter s**** and because of this poor positioning he looks good when he needs to throw himself at a ball a better keeper would get straight at him.

Now I finally realised that you can't be anything than a WUM. Player of the season for Charlton.
DazzlaJ Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Carson has lost Charlton more points than he has won them this season That statement is a steaming pile of horse s***!
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Stick him out on loan for another year & then assess. As Foster did with Watford - 2 years, if Charlton stay up let them loan him again if they want him
Bootle Buck Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Having watched him many times on TV this season I must say he blows hot and cold. He makes some great stops but then looks poor in other situations. I don't think he is good enough to command a starting position for a top four club. However, he is good enough for a middle of the pack team. I wish him well

I doubt it...but hey - stranger things etc. Their reserve Michael Rensing isn't bad at all and they'll probably go for Timo Hildebrand from Stuttgart when Kahn retires as well. He'd do well at Inter/AC Milan to be honest. All their keepers are atrocious.

Benzo-13 Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 (edited) Didn't Hildebrand already agree a deal with Sevilla or did I dream that? You could be getting confused with Hinkel who joined Sevilla from Stuttgart last year. Edited April 30, 2007 by Benzo-13
