Carson says he doesn't want to go back to Liverpool and 'be forgotten'

"After playing a full season here, I don't really want to be going back to Liverpool and being forgotten again," Carson told the Daily Telegraph.

"I'd be taking a step back," he added.

Interesting and outspoken comments from the young Carson. There's room for interpretation in what he's said but it seems clear he wants to play games for us. Maybe he'd be satisfied with playing in the league and FA cups ? He's unlikely to get any other games. If we are to contemplate sending Carson out on loan again then we might as well sell him.

Jerzy will be off in the summer.

Padelli and Martin aren't really ready are they ?

It's a tricky one because Carson has had an excellent season for Charlton - he gets plenty of saves to make - and I think he is the best successor for Paul Robinson as England keeper.

I used to think that Dudek was too good a keeper to sit on the bench, but changed my mind when Arsenal reserves put us out of both cup competitions - 10 shots on target, 9 goals. It is essential that Jerzy goes in the summer.

I hope the club manages to retain Carson's services - maybe a pay rise and the promise of plenty of Carling and FA Cup action might do the trick? If Reina gets injured I am not confident about the quality of the cover.

Thats not a promise anyone can make though. It could be 2 games if we go out in the first round, it could be a lot of games but Carson is at a stage of his career where he's pushing the England squad and will want to play every week.

I can see him moving on, its a shame because he's a good keeper but we can't give him the football he needs.

Maybe Padelli is ready to step up to that level, but its a problem with all young keepers. They need to be playing and they can't play if they are on the bench every week.

Sign Jagielka ?

In my opinion we have the best keeper in the world in Reina and one of the best in this country in Carson. Would love to see Carson back here and pushing Reina for a place but for the sake of the players progression it may be best to keep him out on loan for a full season with the potential for a recall if Reina was injured.

Reina's speed and ability to sweep :hmm: make him a stand out in the current crop of goalkeepers

I dont see how we can keep Carson to be honest. He's experienced a season of first team football in the league and done pretty well by all accounts. Sitting on the bench, even if it is at a top club would be a step back for him. Plus his stock is the highest it's been in his career and will probably demand a decent fee or maybe another loan move.

He's no better than Cudicini, and if Carlo is content to sit on the bench for Chel$ki, then I don't see why Carson couldn't do the same for us.

Rubbish argument, I know, but it made sense to me... at first.

Cudicini is a puzzle

Cudicini is around 34 tho' and has only averaged about 20 games (probably less) per season throughout his career. Carson obviously has the desire to actually play and some ambition, it also doesn't help that Reina is also young.

Carson's over rated anyway.

I don't know your basis for saying that. I have seen quite a lot of Charlton on TV this season, and every time Carson's performance has been faultless - sometimes brilliant.

See, I told you it was a rubbish argument. :D

I feel we need a solid and older back up next season, and I'd be tempted to sell Carson. Reina is better so we should cash in on Carson, given that they are of a similar age.

doesnt cudicini supposidly stay at the chavs because he`s going for a pilots licencse, and simply, by playing second fiddle, he has all the time in the world

as for our matter with Carson, you cant blame the lad for wanting first team football ,its like your first summer job, once you get the few bob, you dont wanna go back to school and have nothing

Can anyone recall mistakes Reina has made this season that has lead to goals being conceded? I'm not criticising Reina, just wondering how many costly mistakes he has made in comparison to last season?

Everton away obviously. Possibly Newcastle away.

don't see the problem, or the argument really. If he wants out, Liverpool will just cash in on him. He's on a long contract here, he's English (therefore subject to EnglishPlayerTax at 20% on top of the expected fee), so someone who needs a good young #1 goalie, is going to have to pay up.

Carson is very good, but he's not in the same class as Pepe Reina, and as Pepe is only 24, it's not like we need to keep hold of a young goalie to take over from him.

Pepe Reina signing a new long term deal here is the most important goalie move we can make in the summer.

He's too good to sit on the bench here, but he isn't better than Pepe (most aren't). Better to sell him for a big profit and see if we can pick up an experienced veteran IMO.

Beyond Pepe, Carson & Jerzy I know Rafa doesn't think the cover is of a sufficient quality for first team football yet. That period we had earlier this season when Jerzy got sent off in a reserves game and Carson was away at Charlton, Rafa was asked about the cover for Reina and he said, quite clearly, that it was a big problem because the other guys just weren't ready yet.

I think arsenal need a keeper in the summer and may want him. as he is a good keeper, I would not want him to go there. with the scum bringing back foster, who also looked good, the russians have cech and us having reina, only arsenal are weak in that area. I would hope we keep him for at least next season, and loan him again.

I admit I'm tired but what would be the point?????
