From the Times Online....

"Hicks believes that Benítez?s wife, Montse, will hold the key to keeping the manager at Anfield, although having been told by the Spaniard that he will stay, the Texan billionaire is adamant that Benítez would reject the advances of Real Madrid if the Spanish club come calling again in the summer, as is expected.

?Rafa?s not going anywhere,? Hicks said. ?He?s under contract and he told me that his wife has said that if he ever did go, he?d have to go without her because she?s staying in Liverpool. He?s staying in Liverpool, too, because he?s the man that we want."

Great News!

Don't want to sound like a smarta***, but am I the only one who couldn't really see Rafa leaving within the next few years?

i never thought he would leave this summer if the takeover went through....

as soon as I heard Gillett and Hicks and got a sense for what they were about I couldnt see him going

the only place he will leave us for is Madrid but it wont be until it is right for him

Why would Rafa leave us now when he is loved, wanted and highly regarded to go to Real Madrid were he will be fired if he doesn't win the league in his first year. The manager of Real Madrid is constantly under pressure and scrutiny, on and off the field. I can't see that appealing to Rafa or his young family.

I'd imagine that's part of why Montse wants him to stay right here.

She must enjoy seeing her husband revered and backed through thick and thin here and being settled. Probably doesn't want Rafa to have to come under the kind of ridiculous pressure managers of Madrid find themselves under come the first game they lose.

I've never met the lady, but quite frankly from the bits I read I think Rafa's wife is an absolute star. If I could afford one as nice as Rafa buys her I'd go out and get Montse a watch myself.

If you were manager of Real Madrid and we're loved there, but then the Liverpool job came up and they desperately wanted you. What would you truthfully do?

There is only one answer for me.

I have no doubt that Rafa is staying however, I just wanted to answer the first part of your post. There is no job I wouldn't quite for the Liverpool job.

I`m not a regular at Anfield, but those who goes to matches often should really make a song for Montse Benitez. :) Imagine her name being sung all around Anfield...haha. Would be hilarious.

paul wilson's piece on sunday was quite good about this. could be a while before la liga becomes a more attractive destination again than the premiership.

Are you saying he lacks ambition? ;)

Rafa would only be a coach in Spain and not a manager like he is now. He'd have virtually no say in who gets bought and who gets sold.

Chairmen there are ruthless. What if Capello ends up winning the league? He's still getting the sack!

Look what happened to Rafa's good mate Del Bosque.

Madrid don't deserve Rafa.

I think just "Montse Wants A New Watch" would be good for semi or a final. You have to be careful not to be over familiar or the like.

From Sky

Rafa Benitez has revealed he has turned down 'a good offer' to quit Liverpool.

The Spanish coach has proved a major hit at Anfield and is perceived as integral to the club's future success.

New joint owner Tom Hicks has claimed that Benitez would be staying on Merseyside because his family do not want to leave the city.

While Benitez was reluctant to bring his family into the issue, he acknowledged his family are happy and that he had declined the opportunity to join another club.

He refused to identify the club, with Real Madrid having been linked with his services, and insists there is no reason to end his three-year association with The Reds.

"You know my idea, I don't like to talk about my family, but they are really happy here," said Benitez on Sky Sports News.

"The Scouse accent of my daughter is a problem for me, but we are really pleased to be here.

"The only thing I want to say is I said no to a good a offer, a good team, because we are happy.

"It's not a question of money or other things, it's a project with my team, with my club and also the fans, the supporters behind us.

"We're really pleased and really happy here for all these things together."
