Chumpions League

he FA Cup winners may be rewarded with a place in the Champions League from 2009 under sweeping changes suggested for Europe's elite club competition. The proposal, mooted at Uefa's European Club forum, could see the winner of each country's main knockout tournament included in a new end-of-season playoff system or even granted an automatic Champions League berth.

"A number of clubs have expressed an interest in this situation," said William Gaillard, Uefa's communications director. "We are not against it in principle and if this is the view of the majority there is no reason why we shouldn't do it. The clubs that we have heard from have responded quite favourably."

Bad idea, I would prefer the top 4 team from this country to go to the CL

if another place is made available for the CL I would prefer that go to the UEFA Cup winning side

they can generally be in the cl anyway though the year after they've won the uefa cup. remember we were.

great idea. aslong as the runner's up are not eligible, and I think the article stated the place would revert to next best league team rather than fa cup RU ?

This would ensure the top teams treated the competition seriously (see Wenger's recent comments), and also reduce the chances of sides like millwall making it into europe courtesy of losing a cup final.

Of course, it raises the possibility of a no mark making the CL qualifiers, but that just leaves more cash for the other 3 english clubs to split when they don't make it through.

Bad idea.

Let's not forget that Platini is adament that every country will only have 3 representatives in the CL every season.

If this change was brought in at the same time that would mean the top 2 and the cup winners.

that would never happen though. TV companies and the bIg CLubS are in charge here, not Platini.

the first time that a Milan, Real Madrid or A N Other self-important G14 club doesn't qualify for the CL over a couple of years then Platini is toast.

The CL is the overblown, cash-rich b astard child of the European Cup because the glamour teams play in it, it gets massive viewing figures and TV money because of that. Not saying it's right, just the way it is now.

If he has some puritanical view of European football then he should go back to the European Champions Cup (for League Champions) and Cup Winners Cup format. Of course he knows that is never going to happen and would lead to a breakaway league.

The FA cup does not need a carrot at the end of it, it is prestigious already, ask any English player - they dream of winning it. Some of foreign coaches that have devalued it that's all. Benitez certainly learned the hard way after the Burnley game. He made up for it a year later.

Not true ~ we qualified for the Champions League via League position, not by winning the UEFA Cup. Winning the UEFA Cup gurantees you entry into....well...the UEFA Cup.

Seville being the obvious example.

I agree, but it's a weird one for UEFA. It would spark life back into the UEFA Cup but be admitting that it's the CL's poor relation at the same time. But I do think you deserve a place in the CL knockout for winning UEFA.

And if it isn't won by the big 4?

"Welcome to tonight's Champions League fixture between Millwall and Barcelona".....

So what? They'd have earned their place and if it enabled a few other teams to get to the big stage so much the better. We may benefit from the current setup but for football lovers in general it's becoming a very sterile and predictable setup. Do we really want the same 4 teams each year carving up the big money from the CL and thus distancing themselves further from the rest? I want Liverpool up there on merit, not because the game is rigged in their favour.

I'd maybe go even further and have a CL playoff between the winners of the FA Cup and the Carling Cup with the loser qualifying for the UEFA. That game would have massive appeal and 2 competitions would be enhanced instead of one. I'm not so sure about the winners of the UEFA cup getting a CL place simply because it dilutes the principal that the Champions defend their trophy.

UEFA consider letting UEFA Cup winners into Champions League

Fri 30 Mar, 05:28 PM

LONDON (AFP) - European football governing body UEFA confirmed Friday that they will consider awarding a place in the Champions League to Cup winners from 2009.

The proposal could see the winner of each country's main knockout tournament included in a new end-of-season play-off system or even granted an automatic berth to Europe's elite club competition.

William Gaillard, UEFA's communications director, said: "This is one of many, many ideas that are being discussed. It will go before our new strategic council in June and a final decision will be taken in September.

"Many ideas are circulating of contrasting views and this one is that the cup winners from countries with more than one qualifying team for the Champions League would go into the tournament.

"Many people like cup competitions and feel that the end of European Cup Winners Cup has been a raw deal for the cup winners.

"It would need the agreement of the clubs, leagues and national associations so if they support it, it will go forward or it might just disappear.

"A number of clubs have expressed an interest in this situation."

UEFA's new strategic committee will have representatives from European's football governing body, the players' union FIFPro, the leagues and the clubs.

It will also be asked to look at an idea put forward by UEFA president Michel Platini that would see the lowest qualifying teams from England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Portugal playing off against each other for three places in the group stage of the Champions League.
