Yes, We have problems

GERRARD: YES, WE HAVE PROBLEMS

By David Anderson

STEVEN GERRARD accepts he has to put aside personal preferences over his Liverpool position for the good of the team.

The Reds captain has seen his form criticised recently as the debate continues over whether he should be restored to his favourite central midfield role rather than the position on the right which boss Rafael Benitez wants him to play.

It is clear that Benitez is 'not for turning' on this issue and Gerrard is likely to be on the right of midfield for tomorrow's visit of unbeaten Aston Villa to Anfield. Gerrard says the manager knows what position he prefers, but he accepts where the Spanish boss wants him to play for the good of the team.

Gerrard explained: "The position is not the issue.

"When you are a young player breaking through you want to play in your favourite position, you are desperate to get into the team.

"But I am 26 now, I have to think of the team first. If the manager needs me to do a job on the right or the left I have to accept it.

"He knows where I would like to play but I understand there is a job to be done for the team."

Gerrard was criticised for his performance in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Manchester United, but added: "Certain people expect me to go out every game and be man of the match and score from 30 yards. I understand when I am not playing to my own standards, and I can take stick when it comes my way."

said he was happy well as happy as he could be in a team that was 11th in the table but he was part of that team and they had to start doing their talking on the pitch

said rumours about him leaving always come up but he has two years (after this year) left on his contract and he is staying

Why do the news have to ask him after every defeat is he happy?

Don't know where they got the headline from. They must have had it ready before the interview was done.

The only thing I ever expect from a Liverpool player is they they give 100% and Gerrard hasn't done that this season as far as i'm concerned.

Just because he is black doesn't mean he's an alien. Racist.

Gerrard has taken a lot of stick over the years..... but you have to say since all this chelsea nonsense was put to bed 15 months ago he has been a fantastic captain and someone we can all be immensely proud of...

Also mention he doesnt get on with Rafa. Either of those headlines were on the back of nearly every paper they showed on SSN.

I don't buy 'em anymore. Have'nt done for about five years. I use the Net - the Beeb for general news, YNWA, and occ. RAWK for Reds stuff. The 'red tops' have been like comics for years, and I could never find the time to read the broadsheets

The worst culprit of recent months has been the Guardian - the City of Liverpool must have run over their comfortable middle-classed cat.

I couldn't care if he thinks Rafa is the biggest div this side of manchester, as long as both have the best interests of LFC at heart, that will do for me.

to be honest, it's Rafa that would have reason to think Gerrard is the biggest div this side of Manchester. Makes me laugh how this is always turned against Rafa. He's the manager, and what he says goes. The player isn't as important in the equation. But as you say, so long as they do what is right for Liverpool, then it aint' a huge thing.

With the recent change to transfer windows, the papers have to invent other types of bulls*** to fill their back pages.
